He also didn't have 1/3 of the lead in audience that made Jay Leno so big in the mid and late 90s. Jay Leno's show KILLED any chance of that happening for him. He didn't get the fall boost he deserved with better shows airing before his and the local news. You can't tell me that Jay Leno skits were all that good. You're right, Conan couldn't a lot of the things that he did on Late Night, but given a little more time, he would have adjusted. Come on, 7 months? Jay Leno and NBC are classless.

Last place for NBC was still MUCH higher than what Jay was pulling in. Even the local news affiliates were complaining that their ratings were down. If Jay wasn't such a putz, he would have said that he didn't like NBC's decision and should have taken his business elsewhere LONG AGO. Sorry, but you can't convince me that Jay is a victim. Neither is Conan really because he got such a huge settlement, but Jay is a scumbag and Conan is a class act.

And to answer your question, YES Conan would have stood up for Jay if the tables had been turned. But then again, Conan wouldn't have let this mess happen in the first place. Conan didn't like the idea of moving back a half hour for Jay because that just shits on everything the Tonight Show is supposed to be and he also didn't think it was right that Jimmy Fallon and Carson would also have to be pushed back. you're partially right. it was higher but not MUCH higher... jay was averaging 5 mill a night, the network was averaging 7-8 mill a night before the leno show started(still horrible for primetime,on a weekly basis). and even with that, jay was DOMINATING letterman by almost 2 MILLION! it's becoming understood the lead-in does not translate from primetime to late nite(anymore, at least)...

Part of the reason why the NBC morning show is number 1 is because people generally wake up to what the same thing they fell asleep too. There have been studies on this stuff. At least now people know what kind of person Jay Leno really is, and he'd do the same thing again just like he did to Dave and Conan. NBC is a piss poor company as well.
