Great song but Dennis Brown sang is a different song with the same title which gave a modern interpretation, but the white man claimed that as his. I love Frank Sanatra version he sang it like he was a black man I feel he must have had some black blood in him. This is a protest song, which had been diluted to keep the KKK happy
OMFG !!!! Im covered in goosebumps. An amazing voice and a heart warming talent. An awe inspiring gift, indeed sent from God. WOW ! Thank you for reminding why I adore not only this movie, but also this movie era. Just a breath taking vocal ! Wonderful. Thank you for posting such a quality version :o)
My father was a great admirer of Paul Robeson and introduced me to his music through this very song, "Ol' Man River." He had an incomparable voice--there''s no replacing this consumate musician, so it's great to see him remembered!
@crf250chris yeah its sad how other races are treated just because of the color of their skin. my great-great uncle was one of those people that treated other people badly based on their race and gender (he was sexist towards women as well)...needless to say, me and him did not get along. my siblings, cousins, and my grandfather could not stand him ha. racism sucks
@FMSAA1223 I love your comment, you I see as my brother a black heart man like me Check out Dennis Browns version which I produced. The word are not the same but it has the same message
sad song to me.....mom passed 3 yrs ago. she used to sing this song to be when she was bathing me and i would cry everytime she sang it.....just somethings will never be forgotten!! i love you mom!!
@daniel preston jones Your missing the point. that is the way many black spoke, in that time period. This was due to poor schools for black people at that time, not because whites are smarter. Colored people was a proper term in this time period, for Black people. It was not consider a racist term at that time. in this period black people referred to them selves, as colored people.
I wasnt being that deep or PC in that comment i was merely saying that what is written down as the lryics attached to this video isnt what he is actually singing in the song.

Yes. I think this is his best recording of it. In the context of the actual play, instead of the lyrics changed to suit a political message. Did he ever performed it in Russia? By the way, are you one or do you merely idolize brutal communists?

you got the lyrics wrong
"[Colored folks work on de Mississippi,
Colored folks work while de white folks play,"
he actually say's
Darkies work on de Mississippi,
Darkies work while de white folks play,
but otherwise its a classic song.

This really is a signpost-song for America
It just fits the time, the race, the people, the country of the time so well...
And it doesn't hurt that you might so easily think that if God sang, his voice might sound just like Robeson's...
A brillaint song, and a great man.
