@RioVerdee: Totally agree!! I was just discussing that with a friend cos we just heard it on The Walrus (San Diego radio station) and I pointed that out...
It began in earnest in the late 50,s. Rock and Roll exploded on the radio first and then TV. It was a fabulous time to be alive and grow up. No drugs, no pot, just a beer now and then if we could get an older guy to get us some. We all took it for granted. If you like Long Cool Woman, go to Wooly Bully, Sam the Sham and the Pharohs.
Rock and Roll " PERFECTION", 5,381,444 you tube hits on this classic. I consider myself fortunate to have been a teen when the rock and roll bomb went off. Still livin it.

Allan Clarke has to be one of the greater singers of that era--going from singing this song to doing such a superb job on "He Ain't Heavy." Surely his talented voice gave the group such an ability that other groups didn't. They literally could do anything they wanted with his voice leading the way. Major kudos dude.
I guess that most of you all on here know that their name is a tribute to Buddy Holly. (whose birth name was 'Buddy Holley). He dropped the 'e' in his last name when he started touring and, of course, he was tragically killed in a Cessna plane crash in 1959 after a show. We play this in my classic rock cover band. Always a hit at gigs.
@Blinkboybrad- i totally agree with you. i was too born in 1990 and i cant stand most of the crap that is out today that our generation calls music. i listen to mostly 60's and 70's music. the best time for really great music, in my opinion. the hollies being one of my absolute faves.
Love it!!!!Loved all the bands of the 60's 70's and 80's...The comment made by horsenaround hit it right on the nail...I only listen to classicvinyl on the radio...
saturday morning, open a beer, push play, look out the window from the 3rd floor, watching people walking by, thinking of what may happen tonight, maybe love, dead or both, or i'll wake up by the apartment door with the keys in my hand and a beer in the other...see...
Cripes! Will you people stop with the melodrama, already?! Yes, The Hollies were great, so were the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, etc, etc. So were plenty of groups from the 80's 90's 00's and today! When was the last time you went out and saw a live band locally? Guess what? There are thousands of great bands all over the country playing small venues that would blow your doors off! Rock and Roll will never die, and it ain't fading away, either!!
@1HarryIvan If you tryuly think that, then I will go out on a limb and say you don't know what great music is. I live in Buffalo, and i see live bands all the time, and 95 percent of them are kids my age who are stupid hipsters, that just creat noise. I'm sick of the same defense over and over aain, that try to overlook the fact that there really is a huge gap in talent and creativity today in music. People like you refuse to accept the truth, just like why america is dying.
I also worry about the future of rock and roll, let alone music as a whole. Being born in 1990, I find myself complacent amongst my generation for failing to produce anything worthwhile for me to enjoy, hence why I am constantly delving into the past. It upsets me that I only find peace in the past, but I am hoping that rock will wake up out of it's coma, and dethrone this mindless nigger garbage. I started playing too, but i think itsa our job to show our friends this music, to try and save it
man this song still has one badass intro. even by todays standards it's away ahead of alot of the music that you hear now. and it's over thirty years old.
@solcario2 You must not of known the Hollies or CCR too well if that's the case, Clarke and Fogerty have very distinct differences in their voices. The main one being that Fogerty has a tendency to add a strange twang to words...maybe I just have a more astute ear than most...meh
What bothers me is that with all these good old bands getting too old to perform anymore and retiring, who the heck is going to carry on with our rock n roll? Certainly, there are no bands nowdays that could even begin to touch the talent as musicians that these old bands had! I think this is the end of a the glorious days of rock n roll like this and it makes me so sad! I just havent been able to get into any of the music since the heavy metal bands of the 80s. Its just not the same anymore!
True that. This is great tune, and a lot of excellent music came out of this era.. But, if you can't find stacks upon stacks of fresh, innovative, and exciting music being made today, you need to take off those rose tinted glasses and pull your head out of your ass.
@itstristanyo Yes, there are lots of talented bands out there, but the beat isnt the same. The spirit of the people is gone as it was back then! Most of the rock music nowdays is very boring and slow or mixed with rap or electronica. I do like one band though and thats New Medicine and im also enjoying James Durbins new cd.
@horsenaround but , don't you think ...bands like 'The White Stripes" (in my opinion) carry it on? ..If not ...I believe music evolves...and styles come back around...a lot of 'young musicians' are influenced by the past ...everything is relative ...even if you go back to 'The Hollies' , they too- were influenced by the past also! I think rock has a great future ...it all comes back and it's about creativity. Peace , man!
@horsenaround just coz it aint commercail doesnt mean its dead, it still lives in all of us. If you care enough you would make a band or help support your local rock n roll ;)
@horsenaround like James Hetfield said back in the days "sad but true". Even though i wast born back then I never stopped listening to "old" music and never started to listen to the crap they call music nowadays. Well aside from techno :)
Back in college, these guys played an out door show, in the spring ... they jamed out this song for about 15 minutes ... or maybe that was the acid ... anyway, was a great show.
I can't stop playing this because it brought out a rebellious, fun-loving side of me instead of the stodgy Engineer working his way up the corporate ladder in England in the 60s. I love this song because it sounds so much like the Rock & Roll coming out of the US in the 60's aka Chuck Berry but was produced by a great UK band who unfortunately did not hit the big times as high as the Beatles or the Stones. Great to hear them again and again. Thanks.

This song reminds me of a west Texas pool hall on a hot July with a beat up old juke box playing this 45 on it and ol' boys throwing back shot glasses of Jack and pounding Lone Star tall boys - oh yea and a fight breaks out in the back and no one seems to mind as long as the music keeps playin'..

i'm in my 20's and I love this song. I don't know what it is, the lyrics are kinda lame it sounds kinda hokey but it's got that solid back beat and it sounds kinda kick ass
@zeppelincheetah you kinda like the word kinda, but of course, kinda is not a word, its TWO words, ,KIND, and , OF.it sounds kind of kick ass, yes very good, your command of the English language is hugely impressive
Always loved this groove, real simple and yeah it does sound like CCR...reminiscent of Green River. You could do a medley of this song, Green River, Old Man Down the Road, Run Thru the Jungle and the drummer would never have to change from this beat.
I would place (3) it in the top 10 of songs of the 70's. A GREAT SONG better than junk played today! It's played with heart and soul! Rock On Hollies!
I Remember it sounded great then still does NOW. I was in High School then and hearing it again takes me back to a better time in my life. They were a great group playing songs with a style never to be topped!
@jamaral81 I think you are a little unkind with that comment. Allan Clarkes vocals are true "Clarkey" and all that has been done is to put some echo on the track and therein lies the similarity. The song was actually all Clarke, not the Hollies and became a hit during the time he had left the group.Luckily he came back until he retired in the 90s.
This song always reminds me of when i was young & bein at a Jaycees convention with my folks down at the beach, us kids chasing each other, & old farts dancing and drinking PBR lol
Such a cool song! The part where they delay the bass and drums coming in for a whole bar is fucking brilliant.

Always loved this groove, real simple and yeah it does sound like CCR...reminiscent of Green River. You could do a medley of this song, Green River, Old Man Down the Road, Run Thru the Jungle and the drummer would never have to change from this beat.

@steveyraynelson they do sound like CCR both great bands :)

Total Creedence rip off song

@jamaral81 I think you are a little unkind with that comment. Allan Clarkes vocals are true "Clarkey" and all that has been done is to put some echo on the track and therein lies the similarity. The song was actually all Clarke, not the Hollies and became a hit during the time he had left the group.Luckily he came back until he retired in the 90s.

This song is a classic! It was way ahead of it's time and it's still a song that you think was made recently. That's how good it is.
