elway was the 3rd best qb i have seen behind marino and peyton. montana was great but come on if you had either 3 of those qbs especially marino on those 49ers teams they would have won more than joe did.
Yeah, Elway threw a very hard pass with a tight spiral, but it wasn't until he was able to put more touch on his throws did he start completing a higher percentage.
He was basically a one-man wrecking crew in the late 80s. He had a below average running game and horrible offensive line and was still able to reach the playoffs almost every year.
Home field advantage at Mile High Stadium helps, too. ;-)
It's easy to win Super Bowls when you can spit and hit a hall of famer or pro bowler like the 49ers had. Here's a typical Montana TD: 3 step drop, about 10 minutes to read the coverage, dump it about 10 yards upfield to Jerry Rice and watch him run 40 yards for a TD. This video shows a typical pass play by Elway. If Montana had played for the Broncos, he'd have been selling insurance within 2 years; he couldn't even stay healthy with the 49ers offensive line protecting him for hours at a time.
@cacable7 You must have read that in the Denver Post back in the late 90's. So true! During their prime, put Elway behind Montana's line and nothing changes. Put Montana behind Elway's line and, well, they don't go to 3 superbowls in 4 years and Montana probably does not go down as one of the best to play the game.
@MrCeej9999 Elway had more 4th quarter comebacks more then anybody , was more mobile then favre Elway could run when needed. Elway didn't have close to the talent that Favre had for his whole career until the last 2 or 3 years of his career. His 1st coach for years didn't even want to throw the ball that much. They would try to run it that wouldn't work and Elway was asked to lead them back in the 4th quarter more then enough times. Elway led them to 5 superbowls and won 2 ,more than favre!
thank goodness he's not favre...elway 1 favre 0 head to head superbowl matchups. plus you can always count on favre to make the bad play to lose the game. geez thank God he's not #4!!
@1472ASG LOL, you are DREAMING!!!! This video right here was just a crap pass. Favre could throw that pass back peddling off one leg with a defender in his face and still throw it better than that!

Folks -----Mark Rypien, Brad Johnson, and Trent Dilfer won Superbowls. Does that make them greater than Dan Marino? Give me a break

Let's be honest, with this Favre vs. Elway thing:
Other than losing more, and crumbling under pressure in big games, Elway doesn't beat Favre at anything.
Elway maybe had 2 Favre level seasons his entire career. His last 2

@MrCeej9999 then again that was against Farve.

@1472ASG Yeah, that Favre guy throws the prettiest INT's I've ever seen. So many of them too.
marcelagae 1 year ago 15
@marcelagae wasnt it obvious that he would get the record for most int's when he has the record for most pass attempts?
