you, my friend, are an idiot. That's about all your video managed to prove. Thanks again for wasting my time with your showcasing of your really pathetic internet connection. Try snailmail much?
I don't know if this question has been answered for you as of yet, but iChat doesn't cost anything at all. As long as you have any of the last 2 or 3 iLife suites that have recently released then you just click on the iChat icon and connect it to your AIM account (one time only) and you are good to go.
The reason iChat failed so miserably in this comparison is because I was in China at the time, and apparently Apple/AOL, for whatever reason, had some problems handling users of the iChat service from there. I created this video after getting fed up with iChat failing all the time, and compared it to Skype because that was what I ended up using instead of iChat.
I can see why you ended up using Skype, but the only time iChat fails on me is either when I have a failed internet connection or when AIM itself fails. iChat itself runs sold for me, no problems.
Why anyone would install a program that's even remotely affiliated with AOL is beyond me. As for the connection issues - it's just that - everything is based on YOUR connection as the first point of failure... I have issues with Skype when on slower less reliable connections but otherwise it's fine.
And yes - you CAN run more than one chat program at once... I've ran 5.
ahahahaha you guys are dumb, thats not an error, he put in the wrong username or password to make it look like ichat sucks, wich it doesnt, and lepord is gonna be so much bigger and better than vista just how zune sucked
the only thing i dont like about skype is on the phone when you call a land line you come across choppy.... or maybe thats just my uncles connection? neat vid thou
I think it is Skype...I get the same thing, but especially worse when I call another country. If I dial the same numbere from my cell phone, it sound perfect.
You can use iChat to chat with .Mac users, AIM users, Google Talk users and users of the Jabber IM protocol. If you want to use MSN, Yahoo, etc., as well, you should check out Adium, adiumx dot com.
ok, i have a question about ichat... can i only talk to mac users, or can i use aim, msn messenger, and that type of stuff with it? PLEASE ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!
Your problem is definitely not in your internet connection. It is in your provider, or in your home router, if have one. Skype has only two advantages over iChat. It can wiggle its way past most firewalls, where iChat cannot, and it has better audio quality, at the expense of poor video and often very, very choppy connection (to the point of it being unusable).
iChat works even with 50kb (practically dial-up!); Skype chokes below 128kb. With audio-only, the floor is even lower on iChat.
I like Jabber too. I've even got my iBook set up as a Jabber server for friends I often chat with regularly online. Jabber doesn't have the A/V capabilities of iChat or Skype though, at least, not that I'm aware of.
Yep. My internet stinks. You are totally right. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot I can do about that because of where I live. In any case, Skype continues to connect and to stay connected more reliably over my shotty internet connection than does iChat. I agree with you that the quality of A/V over Skype is worse than iChat, particularly video.
on my computer iChat starts up WAY faster than Skype. Most of my friends can't use audio/video chat on AIM though, so I use Skype for that more often, The quality on Skype is way worse than that on iChat.
iChat takes on Skype in this internet "connectivity" test. Perhaps the title should more accurately read "Apple's .mac AIM service via iChat v. Skype"?

Skype is remarkably well-built and optimised program - on any platform.
iChat - like 99% of Apple products - is near perfect in usability and performance.
However, iChat will only run correctly if Skype is not running.
So then, iChat is clearly the winner... in politeness!
