The yamaha motors made for toyota rule like was said they out perform anything out there weight to power todate .. the variable valve timing is smart and works like a dream ... people criticising a toyota motor are pissin me and mr yamaha off ..point at one poorly designed and made jap motor and I'll kiss yer ugly sister ...yeah you know who she is ..japs rule the industry ...step omto the curb if you won't try to lead ..either way ..get out of the way..standing still killed the US carmakers
There are more factors than HP to consider when choosing an engine like Footprint (how much space will it take) Throttle response and how will the # of the engine affect the balance of the car in something as light as a Lotus those concerns are much larger than say in a GT-R
what i have a hard time wrapping my mind around is why toyota? i mean i know the old elise's got practically a celica engine but if your going 3.0-3.5l why not go with an e46 m3 engine 3.3 pushin 333hp or even go with nissan's 3.7 with 323+
why settle with 265?
they make better v6's even ford has some project engines with better displacement to power ratio
Because Toyota has been partnered with lotus for quite some time, the engines they design are very reliable and very economic, and because the lotus' are so small, not just any engine will fit. thats why, besides the cars are so damn light, they still make 0-60 in under 4 and 0-100 in under 10 so really the engines are powerful enough
There are more factors than HP to consider when choosing an engine like Footprint (how much space will it take) Throttle response and how will the # of the engine affect the balance of the car in something as light as a Lotus those concerns are much larger than say in a GT-R
so how does is take awhile for a Vette to go 0-60 in 3.5? That must take a while to get there huh? And going with a 3.0 liter from Toyota good for about 250 is all they need in a Lotus. Hell, at ~2000lbs, it doesn't take much to get it movin. They go with Toyota because they want reliability as well. And this is just speculation from edmunds anyway, who aren't the best auto reviewers on the planet. It could see more power than that...
actually the ford 351 cleveland is considered a great racing engine. very versitile too. it's in everything from the lightning to the gt. it's also very popular in many top ranking foreign cars. it obviously wouldn't be the same in a lotus as those don't hold much more than a 6 cyl. but it's far from a "cheap" engine.
You guys talk of power shows you know nothing about lotus, they have never been about power or engines. They have never made their own engines. They have used Ford that Elise was an MG engine, they are all about small light fast, cars with great handling, and looks. Look @ the lotus 7 the acceleration is mental in them like 4 second to 60 and they have no more that about 100 + BHP. Anyone who thinks an 8l engine makes a gr8 car is going to look daft when they try and take a corner.
Lotus HAVE made their own engines. The I4 & V8 Esprits all had Lotus designed, developed & built engines. The same I4 engine was used in the Eclat/Elite/Excel. The Lotus Carlton used a heavily modified GM 3.0 block.
They only do this in the spy videos and I'm really not sure why. We realize you were trying to "hide" from Lotus when you were taking the video, but you are now recording in a studio, lets have some vibrance and excitement not dreariness...
certainly, a supercharger or turbocharger would be a possible solution. since the eagle looks like its going to be lotus's halo car, it deserves a lot of power. perhaps they could make a special carbon fiber version, as almost all body panels of the current cars are made of fiberglass which doesnt respond very well to accidents. a switch to carbon fiber would require less use of steel in frame due to it's structural integrity.
I understand that. But it's the engine that makes a car...go. It makes it a car. A Toyota engine for a performance car just doesn't cut it, no matter how many turbos you add, how much you supercharge it, and what kind of transmission and suspension it has. I just couldn't get myself to drive a "performance" car with a Toyota engine. That might be just me, but I doubt it is.
they used a toyota engine also, not because of the power per liter is greater than any american car other than the CTS, American enignes are famuous for not lasting like they should. Example would be the V6 in the 1990 camero only displaced 106 horsepower at 3 liters, when the Maxima 3 liter V6 from Nissan had an out put of 226 horse power, Chevy had the idea of not how good can we make a car, it was how cheap.
I'm not sure if you're referring to all American car engines, but I have a 1992 Ford Taurus that has 250,000+ miles on it. I have not done any work on its engine, besides the normal care (oil, parts the need replacing, etc...). You tell me that's not a good engine. Plus, it's been 18 years since 1990.
That was a good engine in the Taurus, the Taurus was always a good car, my uncle had the SHO model, the only draw back to that generation was I hear there was a big transmition problem.
Yes I understand that some people say they won't pay for a toyota engine just because Its a toyota. But the lotus exige I believe also has a toyota engine and that car is simply brilliant. I'm sure many people will agree with that statement.
well its simply a relable engine that has avalable parts that for me is a turn on not turn off. but on the other hand it is kinda disappointing that they used a toyota engine. its like the new toyota sport car there talking about using a suburu engine sure theres nothing wrong with suburu but toyota should use their own engine just for pride.
Man i'm sorry this scared me. Please don't read this you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on ten videos in the next hour,if you do tomorrow will be the best day of your life
engine from touota??? they cant build an engine by themself????
palukas80 2 years ago
they could but the engine wouldnt be as good (reliable and probably power too) and then the vehicle would cost more.

It will most likely be the 3.5L V6 from the Camry...that'd be my guess. And the 60 time will settle around 4.5 seconds.

i couldnt agree more. you would think they would have a little enthusiasm, especially considering cars are their business.
MisterTiberius 3 years ago
hopefully they turbo the toyota v6 to make upwards of 300 hp, that would make it a real car. being extremely light helps too =)
MisterTiberius 3 years ago
But they'll have to figure out a way to cool it, A supercharger would not generate the most heat, and might be the best way to boost it.
Rixhard912 3 years ago

I find it hard to believe that people will pay close to $100,000 for a good-looking car with a Toyota engine. It's just unheard of.

what you fail to understand is that there is a lot more to a car than just the engine
