Finally, and this is for RUDENEWS...the reason the first couple black senators were Republican was because the Republican party WAS the socially progressive party 130 years ago. Times have changed quite a bit. Teddy Roosevelt was the last real progressive Republican president. After him, it shifted. By the time of Roosevelt, the Northern Democrats were solidly liberal. By the late 1970's, the Republican party took over the South and moral conservatives. So, let's not distort the truth here.
