@twitortund yeah man i want him to build ma house as well bro...fuck this guys a BEAST i wish i could barter and shit and build a coop......waiiiit i wish i was a proud cock (rooster) cock a dooodle dooooooo look at my meaaaan cooop bra......
wow, it came out really great, my only question is why did you use metal instead of wire? Is it just because you had metal, so didn't wanna waste money? Or is it for extra security? Nice job on the building, looks nice and sturdy.
Sorry I should elaborate on the skirt thing, it has to do with fox psychology..they always dig right up against the wall of the structure. If they hit an obstacle, they dig along the wall. They don't think to dig outwards -so an 8-12" wide 'skirt' buried FLAT say 4" under the ground is much more effective than a vertical underground barrier, which they just spend all night to dig under. I live in southern nsw & spent my childhood sacrificing chooks to foxes only cos I didn't know this! Cheers
Hey how's things!? Great looking shed.. re heat I guess they'll be in the chook run during the day anyway? re incubator for up to say 6 chicks, big desk lamp with a 60+ watt bulb in it and a cardboard box with hole cut in the top always raised ours OK. Maybe these days I'd put a smoke alarm nearby just in case! Trust me, foxes will dig under that tin and kill EVERYTHING inside, it's ghastly.. a chook/pig wire skirt 8" wide and sitting 4" deep saves a lot of heartache, good luck w your chooks!
What provisions do you plan on keeping critters out of the chicken coup. Even in OZ there are many animals that find chickens tasty, Think about digging in at least 6 inches of hardware cloth (wire mess) below the outside walls to keep them from digging in under and killing all your chickens. The tine will make for a very hot chicken out.
good ideas but imagine the heat inside the coop once the tin roof is put on,it needs air circulation, good luck, I was raised on a chicken farm in Alabama.Chickens don't handle the heat very well.good luck
apparently bantoms are pretty good about sitting on eggs -but I imagine the incubator would be more efficient.
In terms of feeding the chickens... what would you do? intro to permaculture suggests a strawyard leading into approx 4 forage systems. They love scratching in my compost if they can find insects:) Almost 100% self sufficient in chiciken fodder?! that would be impressive:)
When you get the eggs for incubation, you'll end up hatching about as many roosters as hens. You want to keep one rooster per 6 hens. No more than two roosters though or they'll fight too much and not pay attention to watching the hens. The second rooster will be a backup for when/if the dominant rooster dies. The manure from inside the coop will be a great addition to compost for your garden! :)
LOL! I can see the Robot-Chicken-Coop flying in the air with the wind! I love ya man! Keep them coming. What's up with the tin? Is it free in Australia? :P. Oh, make sure you have a rooster to keep your hens together if they are going to be free range.
good job! if i was ur neighbor, i have some wood from a barter i made last summer...i could trade you for future eggs hehe...well hopefully something will come thru soon for ya! :)

I really respect the ideology behind it all.
I hope you'll make this a profitable project. Perhaps you can even expand on it if it turns out to work.
