To me aswell, even though I, as a swede who grew up with this mentality (it exists in our family and in general many old people live by it).
the good things about this mentality would be: I have, from what i know, never made any enemies. In 5th grade i got praised by the teachers for defending a victim of bullying, I simply didnt see any difference between him and all other kids.
The bad thing would be that i fucking hate braggers.
I get these laws are about humilty and avoiding boasting. But I just cannot accept these: "You shall not think that you are of the SAME standing as us" and "you shall not laugh at us"
On top of that, if you have a culture that discourages individual thinking, then change is virtually impossible for the individual. How much freedom does the individual have in this kind of culture? None. This video, I think, deals with conformity. With agreeing with the majority because they ARE the majority.
Somebody talked about how if the Jante Law exists, it' because the majority agrees with it. I don't think that's how societies function. Societies don't adopt a certain culture because each individual rationally chooses to do so. Mobs act like waves that crush everything in their paths (meaning dissension), and the individuals that make up that mob don't have any choice but to go with the flow (and most of the time they don't realize that they are part of a wider pattern).
Øhh, den er skrevet af en dansk/norsk forfatter. Og selv hvis den var skrevet af en islænding, så laver det for fanden ikke om på at det er en dansk lov!
"Does that automatically mean they are more creative?"
Yes. What do you think innovation is about?
"Does that automatically mean they are more confident?"
More confident? Than the others in the survey? How on earth would I know? It's neither here nor there. But what Swedes are, however, is creative and ambitious as can be seen in international rankings. :)
No, that wasn't your point at all... that's the point you're trying to make now in order to win the argument. -.- Based on nothing but speculation, I might add...
Show you their inner confidence? Wtf? Personally I think most Swedes are very confident but more as a unit than as individuals. This attitude has made Sweden one of the richest countries in the world. Most individualists in Sweden will move to the US so they can exploit the American underclass, but this is a minority of people. Obviously if the majority of people were against it the jante law would not exist.
Here's a basic lesson on the difference between Islamism and jante: One has a strict list of rules you must follow and one is a guideline. Don't think you can teach me anything? They're of course talking about the system. -.- I am very excited at the prospect of teaching YOU something, though.
Argument from authority? I'm using FACTS, not someone's opinion. Speaking of logical fallacies - try pulling back a bit on the ad hominem. Thanks. :)
yes but they hate the system and many gets pulled down, I friggin live in sweden and I HATE IT. Imagen in school you get put down for answering too many questions. Or saying that the teacher is wrong because we are less that ants.
I was thrown out of the library because I read too much. They blamed me for everything due to that I was different.
It is worse than you think and those people in sweden that are innovative thay move away! Or they live outside the system and are not appreciated.
No, clearly most people would not hate the system - or else it would not exist. You seem to have an agenda too. The typical "get put down if you answer too many questions" is a propaganda line that right-wingers usually pull. A real example of jante is the grading system which starts late and only with 4 grades. No one is thrown out of the library because they read too much - what was ACTUALLY the problem?
Stop lying. There are many innovative people in Sweden, as the statistics show. Emigration is minimal. The ones mostly known for moving out of Sweden are the multi-millionaires - and that's for tax reasons and hardly because of the jante law. Clearly you have some issues to work out and you are free to do so overseas. I recommend London. :)
In sweden we have a minority of gifted children and people and you know what happens they just fall like a block in the system. This makes me sick. I asked to skipp 4 clases because acording to my psycologist I had the capacity to do so. But no, why? No other student had done so. Doing something different or being better is dissregarded and even punished. and the library thing. they thought i was putting too much strain on myself
No, they don't. Such children have every right to enroll in private schools (and they do). Public schools are responsible for carrying everyone along (and not just shitting on the ones who have more trouble). And comparing the education and academic merit of Swedes versus Americans I daresay it worked.
In polictics yes that is a line the rightwing uses. However it is true. Do not say anything without being there. There is a minority that knows what I am saying. Frankly I have lost all respekt for the government. IT IS A FUCKING JOKE.
Fat arrogant pigs who dvell on ideals and are way too privilaged. Incompetence, idocracy, pathetic. You might say I have issues, yes but ambitions like those that exploit the American underclass. They deserve it!!!
No, it's not true. The Swedish system is perfect for anyone who wants a normal 9-5 life (which is the majority) and people who go through the system (which is all Swedes) end up as well-educated adults who are fit to enter the work force. No one is left behind. Swedish education also has a good reputation around the world and plenty of doors are opened up for you in Swedish higher education as well as education around the world. I take it you've never lived outside of Sweden. Am I right?
"but ambitions like those that exploit the American underclass. They deserve it!!!"
I hope you have a great time emigrating to the US although I feel very sorry for their population who has to put up with you. You assume everyone in the US has an equal opportunity to make it as long as they work hard - something which is not true.
"Fat arrogant pigs who dvell on ideals and are way too privilaged."
I salute mieroth for the most persistant person I have ever seen. Are u Swedish if not then why do u care about a shit country like that. If you are then ur just one of those patriots I hate. I guess I have always been a black sheep. You read statistiks right? How about me? I was not treated fair, I never was. Well I learn something in school don´t give shit about anyone but yourself. I could walk away leaving a guy dying without any regret or guilt. Nobody have cared about me so I do the same
i agree on that. i always keep the Jante Law in the back of my head. it actually makes people more likable, since they're not boasting. you shouldn't live by it, but you sure as hell shouldn't forget it either.

the real jante law
1. Don't think that a Dane is special.
2. Don't think that you are more stupid than a Dane.
3. Don't think that you are worse than a Dane.
4. Don't think that you know less than a Dane.
5. Don't think that you can draw worse cartoons than a Dane.
6. Don't think that a Dane can be more important than you.
7. Don't think that a Dane is anything but drunk, smelling and full of prejudices.

Question -- does the Jante law (Jantelagen) still exist today in Scandanavian countries? Is it still used and practiced?
It sounds horrible to my ears, very depressing, very oppressive. What twisted person dreamt up these socalled laws???

Here is a refined version, more concise: (We feel at the core, not think)
1. I shall never feel special
2. I shall never feel important
3. I shall never feel smart
4. I shall never feel I can teach anything
5. I shall never feel anyone cares about me
