I have two lesbian friends who have been partners nearly as long as my wife and I have been married (and that's 37 years) who can screech this out in incredible two-part harmony to the delight of everyone who hears them.
Just to say in answer to Simmo303 that the main vocals on this track are from Gay Woods with Maddy Prior doing backing vocals, and very well she does them too!
I'd never heard that! I wonder why? Is it similar to how men used to play all of the parts (including the women's parts) in plays, because it wasn't proper for a woman to be doing that kind of thing?
You're right. I probably should have posted the whole thing. To tell you the truth, I didn't realize it had cut off half the song when I converted it to an uploadable format, and by then it was 4am and I was tired and just said "Heck with it." (Short version of my explanation: "I was lazy") :)
I'm thinking about going back and redoing it, and including the other 5+ minutes of the song.

Dare I say it, but at 44 and in the 19th century a woman might be better staying an 'old maid'.
The alternative could be a very late pregnancy and an acultely painful childbirth culminating in the death of both mother and child.
Anyway, some of the 'old maids' did very well for themselves. I notice that one of the pictures was of a woman who was an M.D.
A very good song, though (I'm an old Steeleye fan from the '70s).

A great song, pity about the missing 5 minutes though.

This is one of the best displays of Maddy Prior's glorious voice. I have it on cd and let it repeat.

I agree, the missing bit is actually very amusing if you catch the lyrics.

One of the few standard Steeleyes from the dull 90's. Why not post the whole stuff ?
