I think he´s better driving with the NunChuck! Playing with the Nun Chuck is easier than drive with the steering wheel, but the steering wheel is more realistic!
Don't get me wrong, that doesn't take anything away from the fun in the game whatsoever, though it does make the series inconsistent (I can't remember if the DS had the same problem as well).
