The guitar sounds sorta Metallica-ish (in this song, anyway), but not the vocals.  They had a dramatic flair to them that was all Matt Barlow. Hetfield was a decent singer, but he's nowhere near Barlow's level. More than that, though, early Metallica never cared for the epic, grand heights Iced Earth often aimed for. Metallica's goal was to create something gritty and heavy, and Hetfield's vocals were perfect for this. Barlow's would've never worked.

So they're similar, but only slightly.
