@Fruscianteistheman That four of them were from Canada doesn't change the fact that their career and their sound was as American as it gets. Like most well-known "Canadian" acts at the time (Neil Young, Joni Mitchell) they headed south of the border as soon as they could because that's where you go when you're good. The "idiot" reporter was referring to the fact that the only group to make the cover of Time up to that point was the Beatles.
So I suppose it's from the same recording as "King Harvest", which was definitely taken at Woodstock. There *has* to be a full recording of this song lying around somewhere. AND I WANT IT
I would like to let all know that if a comment is voted down enough times it will be deleted by youtube. and since people cannot think for themselves, they might notice the red thumb pointing down and follow like the good lemmings that they are and dislike the comment thereby avoiding all the disdain, and stinking up of the room!!
@FloyDylaN That's Garth Hudson. Dylan wasn't ever officially in The Band although he was important to them. They played a tour as Dylans band (Dylan's songs). At that time they were still Levon and The Hawks. Speaking of Time. Boooo!! international intellectual property theft. The Band and Dylan are separate entities. Bobby did help write some songs and rent the pink jam house where the first album was born, and yes without him and Ronnie Hawkins, they might have never made those awesome albums.
Oh TLC dumb bitch should do her research, the Band is Canadian not American I know this has been overly stated but still to Canadians this is like calling hockey an American sport because the nhl is mainly American.
Bob Dylan did actualy rent the Big Pink" for all of them to practice, hang, chill & only God knows what else, but the fact is it had excellant accustics & produced some of the most famous bootleg tapes. Someone owns "Big Pink" now & actually lives there. I wonder if the walls sing at night?
I love when people call "The Band" America...they just love to steal everything and say its theirs. Either that or they just assume The Band is good and therefore they must be American...
The whole land mass from Alaska to Patagonia is 'America'. What makes US citizens think they have a monopoly on the adjective 'American' to describe a person born in the USA? It's bollocks. You're all Americans, whether you're Billy from Boston, Juanito from Juarez or Victor from Vancouver. I'm British and therefore unlikely to lose any sleep on the question. Great video. I wonder if the current owner of Big Pink lets R&R 'pilgrims' have a nose around?
@macmaghnusa: I'm not sure what your point is, but just because the two continents in the western hemisphere are called North and South America, does not make us all Americans. Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro do not abide by America's Constitution. America has it's own distinct culture, traditions and laws, as does every other country. Billy, Jaunito, and Victor are not all Americans. Billy is Canadian and Juan is Mexican. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??
The point is very simple Tom, it's hardly rocket science, old chap. "American" cannot be used an adjective to exclusively describe the citizens of the political entity that is the USA. Canada and Mexico are states in the Americas, North America, to be precise. Consequently the citizens of those states are North Americans just like good yourself. You're deluding yourself if you can't see or recognise that.
@macmaghnusa: Nobody identifies themselves as a "North American". Nobody in South America identifies themselves as a "South American". Good luck trying to change all that. What really bothers you is my reference to "American roots music", right? You take issue with that? Well, too goddamn bad. Actually I'll be more specific: The Band played southern American roots music. You know, things like blues, country and rock and roll. Argue with that and I'll be fully convinced you are truly insane.
Insane? Not at all old boy. This is what I call reasoned debate and at no point have I belittled you or insulted you. We'll just have to agree to differ. I do agree with your definition of The Band's work, although I never heard anyone use the term 'roots' or 'americana' till the early 80s when people started re-branding folk and 'world music'.
@macmaghnusa: I don't know how long people have been using those terms either but they are perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned. And 'Americana' doesn't strictly apply to music. It can apply to anything uniquely American.
The term 'world music' is something I never heard until the 1980's. Seems like an apt description if musicians from different countries and cultures are working together. But American music isn't 'world music' in that respect. It's American music.
Sometimes, the stars align to create something magical and unique. Eric Clapton wanted Robbie's job. Robbie, in his ultimate wisdom, told Eric to go and get fucked.
@racer500gp No sure who you think you are coming out with that. Not sure what politics has to do with it either. If you don't like it nobody's forcing you to listen. Plenty of people with musical skills and knowledge an appreciation for musicianship put The Band right up there at the top. No need for your self righteous bs.

actually, the footage of them playing is from california...they never actually recorded an album (apart from demos with bob dylan) at big pink, and never shot any footage there, asside from a couple of stills
I love these guys, but am kind of unsure why there was such a breakdown between the members in later years. The way my old man tells it, he said that Robertson was prick and tried to take credit for nearly everything. Anyone know what really happened with these guys?
Read Levon Helm's "This Wheel's on Fire" for his take on what went down. He says Robbie basically took all of the songwriting credit and all the publishing rights so he made virtually all of the money off of their recorded catalog. Then, after he broke the band up he had the freedom to go off and do whatever he wanted (music/film exec/producer etc) while the rest of them were forced to keep touring and working themselves to death (literally, in the case of 2 of them). Pretty scathing.
The breaking up of the band was one of the saddest things to ever happen in the history of rock and roll. When these guys walked out on stage it would give me goose bumps and then the music started and all of the magic that goes along with these cats began as well as all the ear to ear smiles that never seemed to leave until the show was over .Boy these guy's were great.
So, this isn't shot at big pink (and Big Pink was where several members of The Band lived, Dylan lived down the road and came over to jam) This is actually shot at either Dylan's house or at Bearsville Studios, run by Albert Grossman, Dylan and the band's manager. Big Pink was a small, suburban style house, it didn't have the kind of open space you see in this video. Check out the recent "A Musical History" box set/book for pictures of both spaces, or Levon's book This Wheel's on Fire
That sounds like Grace Slick making that commentry near the start ...is it ....Thee Spacey Gracey herself ?...there is a brief glimpse of her at the start fro some reason I notice
My dad is 90-Like Robbie Robertson he was of first nations "Canadiana" people-My father's life experience and expressions were as purely common to us as "Up on cripple creek" there's nothing purely "Americana" there except to those who never knew, visited or cared a damn about rural Canada. the tragically hip-another rural canadiana (aka ACADIA-louisina's heritage) sang a provacativly "Lousiana" sounding song-who wrote that you arrogant fart in a windstorm
@Kamzik2006 Maybe the "American" band comes from the type music they played. Wouldn't you agree it sounds "Americana"? They didn't correct it at the time either. Goes to show you Levon's influence too...could Robbie have written those songs without someone who knew the South? And just think; he sat back and collected the royalties on these songs he said he wrote solo..Bullshit! Common sense tells us it was a collaberative effort...so do the other members of The Band. Sad thing to do to friends!
there's more of this footage on the Classic Album documentary for "The Band" available on DVD...great documentary where Levon & Robbie sit with the multi track recordings and strip things back and 're-mix'...way cool and readily available...try Amazon
They WERE NOT Dylan's back up group!! They played with Dylan, Dylan played with them. Got it, interviewer? Dylan's all right I suppose, where The Band is the greatest group of musicians to walk the earth, a small difference.
Levon grow up in Turkey Scratch. Ronnie Hawkins went to levons parents house and pleaded with them to let Levon tour Canada with his band. Levon was only 16 years old........ Levon is the man... The Levon Helm Band is headlining Mt Jam this year..... i wouldn't miss it
American group?4 of them are Canadian, and Levon was living in Toronto when Ronnie Hawkins put them together.I have friends in the American south, and when I tell them that "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"was written by a guy who spent most of his youth on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario,Canada with his mother,a full blooded Mohawk, they refuse to believe the truth. The Band is Canadian.
just to set eveybody straight, north and south of the border, Canada IS on the North American continent, so excuse the fuck out of me if I don't care about your petty ownership squabbles.
This is (also) on the Rykodisc "great albums" series. I'm pretty sure it's recorded in the cabana they recorded the 2nd album in. Sammy Davis, Jr's or something.
The Band is so great! Their music is so pure. It's amazing how they went from Bob Dylan's back-up band and then they came together to make beautiful music on their own after Dlyan's motor cycle accident.
I never knew that they were the first American band on the cover of TIME Magazine. America had many greats before, like Chuck Barry, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Little Richard, and others. It is a shame that America didn't appreciate its music until the British Invasion showed us it was actually great!
They were actually from Toronto, Canada. I have no idea where the narrator got her notes from. They started out backing up Ronnie Hawkins in Toronto's bar circuit. Hawkins was from Arkansas and is considered to be the father of Canada's Rock & Roll scene. He recruited the Band's drummer, Levon Helm from Arkansas hence the southern drawl.
You are correct in saying that they started their careers in Canada and actually every member but Levon are Canandians...BUT after they left Ronnie and came to the US they made the US their "music" home. They played all their music here and lived here as well. Levon and Rick (until his death) made Woodstock their homes.
@CharlieMoher well in reality if you want to get into specifics Rick Danko was from Simcoe, ON, Richard Manuel from Stratford, ON, Garth Hudson from London, ON. apart from Robbie Robertson being from Toronto the only one who was American was Levon Helm who came from Arkansas with Ronnie Hawkins. i guess what the narrator meant was as THE BAND (not The Hawks) they were considered an "American" group cos they got their thing started in Woodstock, NY.
@jeffkahl No arguments really on your details save for the fact that the line up that was later to call themselves The Band was already in existence in the South Ontario area with and without Hawkins.
Free1108 .. as did Garth Hudson call Woodstock his home and he still lives there to this day. Richard Manual I think spent most of his last years in California according to Levon's book This Wheels on Fire.
@CharlieMoher is bugs the hell out of me too when people call them an "american band". im 24 and i grew up in nova scotia, canada listening to this music. to me they will always be a canadian treasure :)
@CharlieMoher Yeah I just watched some Bravo documentary last night all about the Toronto music scene during the 60's/70's. They were called Levon & the Hawks. Great footage of them during this period.
This is from an old vcr tape made about late 80's or early 90's I would guess. I am not sure what it is from, but there were a few clips I was allowed to upload here.
Even if it is not Big Pink, it is pretty damn cool.
This is the only Band portion unfortunately, sorry.
I see above ground windows in the clip so I'm guessing it's not Big Pink as they did their playing in the basement there hence the raw semi-bootleg album The Basement Tapes.
Big Pink was actually a split level built on the side of a hill so you could enter it from "ground level" thru a side door or the main garage door the back half of the basement was more "underground" if you will.. or you could enter from stairs on the "main floor" down to a small burner room and garage it wasnt a "cellar" or dungeon type placelol
They were CANADIAN, Eh? But who really cares about ignorant people who don't do their research? When these guys played peoples jaws dropped. George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ray Davies & Keef Richards
bowed in submission to their incredible musicianship & unparalleled group
dynamics. The songs were what mattered. What an inspiration they were. No posing, no heroics, just music! Their music will last forever.
before they were with Dylan they were in Canada with Rompin Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks. The were sensational then and who is the voice over and where did she get her script? C'mon seriously we're all still listening to great North American Music...Ronnie is too much the gentleman as all are and were to refute such nonsense...I 'm not!
They lived and played in N.Y. state... Most of them were Canadian born. They played a lot of "Americana" music, such as "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Who the fuck cares what nationality people want to assign them? They had no name, let's give them no nationality.
Excuse me, did it say they were the first AMERICAN GROUP to appear on the cover of Time Magazine?! If I remember correctly, 4 of their 5 members were Canadian, with only the drummer Levon Helm an American. That's hardly an American Group.
Not sure how to tell you this but there is this little continent called North America. And in that continent is a country called Canada. So any band that comes from Canada is in fact an American band.
I realize the media has narrowed most peoples view and as such many people see U.S.A. whenever the word America is used. But that isn't the case. Any band from any of the Americas can be classified as an American band. Just need to see things from a broader point of view.
Exactly. American band means the US, not any group from North America. What if there was a Mexican in the group? Would they still all be Americans, as Mexico is part of North America?
It's not the United States of North America. Someone from the US is called an American, not a United Statesian, just like someone from Canada is called a Canadian.
From a review: This 1997 documentary examines the making of the critically acclaimed, eponymous 1969 album by the Band. Televised initially on VH1 as part of their Classic Albums series, and later on PBS, the Rhino Home Video release of this program contains additional footage not seen on the TV version.
There's a really good version of this clip on the band box set entitled a musical history. Shame about robbie robertson, what an asshole. He keeps knocking out the same rubbish in every interview. He screwed them all over, maybe thats whyDylan doesnt talk to him anymore,
I'll bet they would have pulled over if they were hearing an early yardbirds recording, if you know what I mean. Not that they really compare to the band though
Greatest band of all time. No gimic's, no make-up or light show. Down to earth great musicians trading off vocals, Elvis Costello said that his two favorite rock vocalist come from the same band - the Band - Richard Manual and Rick Danko. I full heartedly agree. Long live the Band
Who's atic contains more of these video's from Big Pink? Are there some with Dylan? Share with the world man.
garth hudson, richard manuel, rick danko, are canadian, levon i think is from arkansas, i'm not sure about robbie robertson, doesn't matter really, their just so good and earthy, truly real soul music
Sorry if i pissed you off. I was only making an observation. How do you know they consider themselves as American? Not that it matters. Lighten up buddy. By the way, how do you define American music?
@eimearann haha that was my reaction too! Almost all of them are Canadian. I think the maker of the clips got their facts mixed up, because why would you differentiate and label them as American when Time itself is an American magazine.
LOVE THE BAND.. LOVE THIS SONG... just the embodiment of sitting on a old wooden porch, torn-up Levis, bare feet sitting up on the porch rail with a nice cold PBR and a raggedy cowboy hat hangin' down in your eyes as the sun sits behind the mountain. Brings back the good days of living in Chattanooga and just enjoying life. SING ON BROTHERS!
This is fantastic. I love how in the early days they all used to smile so much when they performed, because they were all clearly in their finest element. It's just one of those little things that goes to show how special and unique this band was. There will never be another. I heard that this footage was shot in Robbie's house? Guess not. RIP brothers Rick & Richard...
well this is of that era "the big pink" time frame but this was filmed in Bearsville Studio's. the basement of big pink was very small , im talking small!!!it was a cellar garage combo sort of thing cuz the house was like a split level , you could get to the cellar from inside the house by going down the stairs or come in from the outside thru a ground level door.
No one uses the adjective "American" in reference to Canada, Panama, Venezuela, Suriname, etc.? No one, except someone making a specious argument vis a vis "what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine". Give a brother in the colonies a break already. The two greatest musical commentaries on the United States of America in the past 50 years both came from Canada. Why? Because peace, order and good government don't inspire art, they inspire reflection.
Damnit! This band was 80% Canadian! Only Levon Helm was an American. And this Canadian act wrote, arguably, one of the greatest musical narratives in American musical history: "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down".
Yep, he definitely looked like he was channeling Lennon. Danko kid of looked like it too, minus the glasses.
Did Garth Hudson invent the wah and clavinet combination? As far as I know, this was the first recording ever to use that combo. It would be the foundation of many funk and disco tunes through the 70s.
My guess is Garth possibly suffers from a form of autism. Other accomplished musicians do. E.g. Glen Gould- Another Canadian, was one of the World's greatest concert pianists. Check him on Youtube you might see what I mean.
Thank you TJTele (caster?)...i always wondered where this was filmed. i knew it was'nt Big Pink but i did'nt know where it was filmed. Although i knew it was upstate NY. Somewhere.
1969, what a fabulous year for music.

@cgraber
Pretty scathing.
bklynbass 1 year ago
The breaking up of the band was one of the saddest things to ever happen in the history of rock and roll. When these guys walked out on stage it would give me goose bumps and then the music started and all of the magic that goes along with these cats began as well as all the ear to ear smiles that never seemed to leave until the show was over .Boy these guy's were great.

Oh, and there is also at least one other song from this film our there. It's on the box set, and is probably the difinative version of King Harvest.

First American band on the cover of Time? Epic fail. London, Stratford, Simcoe, and Toronto, + one American from Arkansas.
Kamzik2006 1 year ago
@Kamzik2006 Maybe the "American" band comes from the type music they played. Wouldn't you agree it sounds "Americana"? They didn't correct it at the time either. Goes to show you Levon's influence too...could Robbie have written those songs without someone who knew the South? And just think; he sat back and collected the royalties on these songs he said he wrote solo..Bullshit! Common sense tells us it was a collaberative effort...so do the other members of The Band. Sad thing to do to friends!

EBlairable 2 years ago
@EBlairable
CharlieMoher 1 year ago 21
You are correct in saying that they started their careers in Canada and actually every member but Levon are Canandians...BUT after they left Ronnie and came to the US they made the US their "music" home. They played all their music here and lived here as well. Levon and Rick (until his death) made Woodstock their homes.
Free1108 1 year ago
@CharlieMoher well in reality if you want to get into specifics Rick Danko was from Simcoe, ON, Richard Manuel from Stratford, ON, Garth Hudson from London, ON. apart from Robbie Robertson being from Toronto the only one who was American was Levon Helm who came from Arkansas with Ronnie Hawkins. i guess what the narrator meant was as THE BAND (not The Hawks) they were considered an "American" group cos they got their thing started in Woodstock, NY.
jeffkahl 1 year ago
@jeffkahl No arguments really on your details save for the fact that the line up that was later to call themselves The Band was already in existence in the South Ontario area with and without Hawkins.
Free1108 .. as did Garth Hudson call Woodstock his home and he still lives there to this day. Richard Manual I think spent most of his last years in California according to Levon's book This Wheels on Fire.

Even if it is not Big Pink, it is pretty damn cool.

@WolfEchoes
I see above ground windows in the clip so I'm guessing it's not Big Pink as they did their playing in the basement there hence the raw semi-bootleg album The Basement Tapes.
CharlieMoher 1 year ago
Big Pink was actually a split level built on the side of a hill so you could enter it from "ground level" thru a side door or the main garage door the back half of the basement was more "underground" if you will.. or you could enter from stairs on the "main floor" down to a small burner room and garage it wasnt a "cellar" or dungeon type placelol

dynamics. The songs were what mattered. What an inspiration they were. No posing, no heroics, just music! Their music will last forever.

muhrvis 2 years ago
Excuse me, did it say they were the first AMERICAN GROUP to appear on the cover of Time Magazine?! If I remember correctly, 4 of their 5 members were Canadian, with only the drummer Levon Helm an American. That's hardly an American Group.
msaxel 2 years ago 2
Not sure how to tell you this but there is this little continent called North America. And in that continent is a country called Canada. So any band that comes from Canada is in fact an American band.
I realize the media has narrowed most peoples view and as such many people see U.S.A. whenever the word America is used. But that isn't the case. Any band from any of the Americas can be classified as an American band. Just need to see things from a broader point of view.
Inquendi 2 years ago 2
Surely that would make them a NORTH american band - as long as you're dealing with semantics :)
chrisrobertsuk 2 years ago

Greatest band of all time. No gimic's, no make-up or light show. Down to earth great musicians trading off vocals, Elvis Costello said that his two favorite rock vocalist come from the same band - the Band - Richard Manual and Rick Danko. I full heartedly agree. Long live the Band

This is fantastic. I love how in the early days they all used to smile so much when they performed, because they were all clearly in their finest element. well this is of that era "the big pink" time frame but this was filmed in Bearsville Studio's. the basement of big pink was very small , im talking small!!!it was a cellar garage combo sort of thing cuz the house was like a split level , you could get to the cellar from inside the house by going down the stairs or come in from the outside thru a ground level door.
ItsBigJimSlade 2 years ago
No one uses the adjective "American" in reference to Canada, Panama, Venezuela, Suriname, etc.? No one, except someone making a specious argument vis a vis "what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine". Give a brother in the colonies a break already. The two greatest musical commentaries on the United States of America in the past 50 years both came from Canada. Why? Because peace, order and good government don't inspire art, they inspire reflection.
