I've had the procedure. But I had gone into urinary retention, and my choice was to wear a catheter bag. No choice. I tell you, the first time I could pee was like escaping from prison. I had a TURP in December 2008. I was anesthetized and there was no pain at all. And afterwards, I had only a little discomfort when peeing, which went away in a couple of weeks. In fact, I wish they hadn't given me so much anesthesia. I was zonked for 15 hours after the operation.

In fact, I would advise anyone who has this operation to ask for LESS anesthesia. They gave me Fentanyl and I was zonked for 15 hours after the operation.

Its not as bad as it seems. I've watched the surgery a few times. It is fairly quick and the patient gets some nice pain killers for a bit afterwards and is cath'd/pumped with fluids. If you had the symptoms that require it, you'd probably want it done too.
