He eventually deserted the German army with a few others and came to Australia because he was disgusted with Hitler's actions. Nevertheless, the German military of the second world war is completely and utterly associated with the Third Reich. Anyone, including upstanding men such as Rommel, will always be a part of the Nazi era of history.
