  • Wow! This is probably the best set of GFS Surf 90s I've ever heard. Don't want to sound like a broken record, but how do you compare the build quality of the 5120 to your 6120? Very nice & unique amp setup you've got there, and you're really pulling the best from all of it.

    Cheers, my friend.

  • @636117 Thanks. The Surf 90s are being replaced by a set of DeArmond 2000s I was lucky enough to find. The 2000s are my favorite Gretsch pickup.

Actually the build quality on the 5120 is on par with the 6120 except in the cosmetics. The Pro-Line Gretsch guitars have great attention to detail but I don't find the playbility all that different. Actually, the neck on my current 5120 is my favorite neck of all the Gretsch guitars I've owned. It is nice and chunky which I really like.

  • Great sound, & playing, Bear! Is this the 6120DSV? Lookin' good, and sounding great too!

  • @636117 Thanks. Actually, the guitar is a highly modified 5120 Electromatic. It is a fantastic guitar with one of the best necks I've ever played.

  • @borgrif Cool! How did you get Dynas to fit in it? Your combination of strings/amp + pickups really hit the sonic spot!

  • @636117 Those aren't Dynas although they sound pretty close. They are GFS Surf 90s from GuitarFetish and are designed to fill a humbucker hole. The strings I use are Fender 350L stainless steel .009-.042 and a Fender G-DEC 3 THIRTY amp with the outputs going to a Kustom KB100 bass amp bypassing the preamp and just utilizing the power amp and the 15" speaker along with the 10" and the tweeter in the G-DEC itself. I'm really happy with the setup.

  • Hello Bear ! I'm Hamer59 from Gretsch-Pages Forum (and GT) ! I really like your sound, your playin' and your G5120 Bear Signature. Best Regards and have a good year ! Gretschin' yours.

  • @hammer59700 Thanks Hamer59, I had fun with the tune. I only wish the backing track had a more country feel to it. I may re-record it at a later date with a more jazzier style.

  • You rocked the Snowman song, Bear meister ! Thanks

Merry Christmas to you and the family ( glad you posted again !)

How do you like that 5120 ? my personal Christmas present to me maybe.

PS Nice shirt too ! LOL

  • @gary5749 Thanks, my friend. I love the 5120. It has a beefier neck than any of my prior Gretsch guitars which really suits my large hands. Also the GFS Surf 90 pickups make it sing in my opinion. I love their sound. Very twangy but never harsh or brittle.

  • Great Job Steve!

  • @bobkat1959 Thanks Bob, the strap has everything to do with it. :o). Thanks again my friend and a very Merry Christmas to you and yours.

  • Great playing, Bear.

A Merry Christmas to you and yours & very Happy New Year!

  • @RichardBaguley Right back at you Richard. and thank you.

  • Hi Bear! Those GFS pickups sure sound good, and so does your playing! What amp are you playing through?

I wish you and your family a christmas to remember!

  • @merijna1 Thank you my friend. I wish your family a very special Christmas as well.

I'm using a Fender G-DEC 3 THIRTY but I'm running through my Kustom KB100 bass amp as well. The 10" speaker in the Fender keeps the nice high end and the 15" thumper in the Kustom really gives a powerful low end. Both amps are solid state.

  • Beautiful Gretch and great playing! What Gretch model is that? I want the Rev Horton Heat or a B. Setzer model, but doesn't anyone with half a brain? Haha! Merry X-Mas Bear.

  • @pwyndam Thank you, it is a 5120 that I put GFS Surf 90 pickups in. I really like the twang of those pickups. You too have a very Merry Christmas

  • Brilliant, thank you and have a splendid Christmas!

  • @Racheltaylordiva Thank you, you do the same.

  • good stuff Bear! those surf90s sound very nice.

  • Great job Bear! Have a Merry Christmas!

  • @myguitar4him Thanks, and you do the same.

  • Very Nice.

    David
