  • wait he said to turn left of echo hold short of yankee, then he asked IBERIA to hold short of FB? i think ATC messed IBERIA up, im looking at an airport diagram now but this may have been a while back

  • This is a very "marked" video. =p

  • a good atc must have good diction, for those who do not use English as their native language, and ... this is not the case!

  • Its his fawking new yawk accent, and run on sentences that is messing stuff up.

  • the famous Arnie!!

  • I don't think you can go onesided on this one: the controller is really really heavy on his accent and goes on with excessive talking (he keeps saying stuff that's unnecessary to the things he's asking), which it's kinda nice but it makes difficult to understand what you are saying when the listener is struggling with the language. On the other hand, the pilot doesn't go with standard phraseology either (he doesn't give a complete reply "hold short of 4L, Iberia...") but then thats just me

  • This video went viral on Malta

  • That controller cant pretend to be universaly understood talking in that way...

  • Pilot´s brain collapsed. He didn´t say anything when the Atc clearly tells him to read back "hold short 4L". To avoid confusions, it´s better to say "Runway 4L". I think that the pilot was trying to find out where Fox Left was, or something like that. Sometimes, the americans use slang and talk too fast, Anyway, not only this pilot, but everybody would update their english.

  • Pilot needs to listen and respond according to ATC protocal---shame!

  • the pilot didnt understand sh!t .... and the ATC as very clear... over and over... STOP THE FRAKING PLANE !

  • I am Spaniard. And I am ashamed of Iberia behaviour. ATC english is perfectly clear. He repeats several time to hold short 4L! Clear and loud!!!!

JFK?... Isn´t that the place where controllers allow their sons to control airplanes?...

  • This pilot is not qualified to have this job. He endangered the lives of everyone on board and possibly on other planes.

  • This is funny lol =P This is basic ATC terminology and the pilot couldnt understand or wasnt listning =D

  • Personally, if no one was hurt or had their feelings harmed, why not laugh a little?

  • Iberia is an absolute reliable and dependable major air carrier.

  • WOW that just sounds dangerous for a pilot to do something like that. I know he didnt ignore the ATC he didnt understand him. By reading other comments Im guessing most if not all pilots need to speak english.

  • "he's bigger than us" ....... ahhahaahahahahahahahahahaha

  • I tell you as a brazilian ATCO, that we have communication problems even between latin america crew and us. How many countries have english as the main language? JFK atcos are great, but sometimes they forget that be understood is what matters. They talk slangs, sometimes TOO fast but I understand the airport has a crazy traffic. We learn the phraseology and we have to run after the fluence. Only now Brazil is sending some civilian atcos to study english at FAA in Oklahoma. Pity.

  • @docinhocarioca Man I don´t think that guy could have spoken any slower than that... Spanish people (generally) have a problem with english (and their accent) and that´s it... Ask any pilot who crosses spanish airspace into Portugal or from Portugal and he/she will tell you the difference.

  • @bruno84 Please tell how many nonsense, any pilot Spanish is as well prepared as any American pilot, English or French ... The accent is not a problem, this is an isolated case. When speaking of a Portuguese driver has trouble sobrebolar Spanish airspace, will tell you that the Portuguese driver does not speak English or speak it very badly ... today Iberia, Air Europa, Spanair or Spanish company is safe and their drivers are well prepared ...

  • by the way, este pendejo was taxying on ZA which is not capable for his aircraft type and he wasn't even aware of that - a real pro this guy...

  • sting3733 your english is so wrong

  • ATC should have had EVERY aircraft STOP weather in air or ground... stop where they where, so he could gather his thoughts and figure his way through this... lol

  • a340-300 or a340-600?

  • Sounds to me like there was a bit of fault in BOTH the pilot AND the controller. Most of it is because the pilot can't understand even simple English, or speak it either .... and he's attempting to fly into an English-speaking country.

But also sounds like the controller contradicted himself a time or two with what he was wanting the pilot to do. Then when it lapsed into pure confusion, he just started arguing. ATC's, above ALL else, MUST know how to remain calm under pressure.

  • @offamychain Doesn't matter what country he's flying in. If you want to be a pilot you HAVE to speak English. ATC is in English anywhere in the world.

  • @Sting3733 You are wrong. 6 languages are ICAO (use by ATC) : ENGLISH; SPANISH; FRANCH; RUSSIAN; ARABIC and CHINESE !

  • @euplot The primary language they use is English! You are expected to know English fluently, and if you don't then you are stupid for becoming a pilot. They may use a native language to a native airline, but every controller anywhere will know English.

  • @Sting3733 If you are a pilot, and fly in all those countries you can use one of this languages. When I fly in Spain, I use (español) spanish. Yes, all ATC are required english. And the PPL pilots, in non english countries, use native language. Just to let you know

  • @euplot you can't even fly as a commercial airline crew without the English endorsement - who cares what ppl's do in their native countries - this video is JFK, dude, that's for the big boys who are supposed to be able to follow the simplest instructions as this particular Iberia crew obviously couldn't do.

  • My friend worked for ATC in Hong Kong International - he will tell you that English is the default language - EVERYBODY must speak ENGLISH when handling aircraft. Although he spoke cantonese with pilots of certain airlines, it is still neccessary that he be conversant in English. It doesnt matter that a Russian or Chinese pilot communicates in their own language when at home but outside their country the pilots need to speak english FLUENTLY. ENGLISH is the DEFAULT LANGUAGE.

  • ...for the record, im not one of these goofs who only speak english. I speak both english and spanish.

  • @euplot no my friend YOU are wrong.. to fly internationally you must have your license certified for the English Language proficiency exam; there are no other proficiency exams out there. I speak 4 languages well but the only one that keeps my license valid is the English language. For your information I am in my 44th year aviating and am current as captain on wide body aircraft In certain locations for domestic flights, the local language is used for convenience but English skill is required.

  • @altazboy Yes, you are right, English is in use all over the world, but if you are a pilot flying in North America (Mexico), Central America and South America you can use Spanish, cause is a ICAO language ( Just like: ENGLISH; FRENCH; RUSSIAN; ARABIC and CHINESE)

But dont worry, ATC will talk to you in English. Comprendes!

  • @euplot

don´t think that ALL Latin America and Central America speaks spanish. What is the oficial language of Brazil??? don´t try to communicate with any brazilian atco in spanish.. we will not answer!

  • @euplot Thanks for telling me all about how ATC will communicate with me, i've got 26,000 hours over 43 years flying and 15 of those years were in south america and caribbean, two more years based in Taipei, and 13 based in the middle east.. ademas pa que sepas, hablo y entiendo correctamente el castellano, idioma el cual utilizabamos frecuentemente volando en Colombia y Venezuela. That doesn't change what I was saying about the requirement to speak English to a high level.

  • @altazboy I want to be a pilot , you must be a captain on a big aircraft sir.

The Iberia pilot was out of here but it sounded bad for him...'' DON'T MOOVE YOUR PLANE , STAY RIGHT THERE '' .. god...I would be shy in his situation , understanding english in aviation it's a must , I'm french actually , I won't talk in french to any ATC , I'll use english.

  • @euplot If you are so know ICAO standards then you'll be aware that the only language which is compulsory is English and the pilots' licenses must be so endorsed for international flight. No such endorsement exists for any of the other languages you mention. I log about 500 hours per year in and out of the Arabian peninsula and can tell you I have less than half dozen times heard Arabia being used. My hats off to my Arab ATC and pilot colleagues for their excellent command of English.

  • @euplot and GERMAN isn't? damn, i thought it was...

  • @offamychain I didn't hear any contradictions. As Iberia got more and more out of whack, the controller got more and more specific with his instructions. When it got to the point where the Iberia pilot couldn't read back a simple hold short instruction, that's where the tower should have (and probably did) given the landline number to the pilot. He has an unacceptable mastery of the English language, which is used worldwide for all ATC communications.

  • @offamychain this controller did a fabulous job - I fly all over the world and can tell you that under the circumstances this IS cool. IB6253 is lucky it wasn't some of the controllers I deal with in many other parts of the world, they would have sent the airport reps to the aircraft in many places I go. Imagine the idiot couldn't read back "stop the plane"...

  • They might be great pilots, but their english isn't so great. It's similar to the Air China vs. JFK ground clip (same ATC if I remember correctly).

  • The controller's name is Arnie, I guess from Arnold. I've read somewhere that they made him retire, yet he was a very effective (and also funny) controller. Check his other recording on youtube, called 'JFK Ground', that is the most funny ATC recording I've ever heard! :D

  • @Susu986 Oh damn thats why I haven't heard him in a while! :(

  • Scary. I wouldn´t wanna be on one of their planes!

  • I'll be honest, this is an embarrassment. How these people can possibly be pilots surprises me. Not only is unprofessional, but also very dangerous. Who in their right mind would employ a long-haul pilot who CANNOT speak English.. in fact.. it doesn't matter if they don't speak it perfectly, but they cannot even read back correctly.

I'm 17, I speak 3 languages, Learning one more, come on, it's not hard.

  • 2:60 sounds like peter griffin lool

  • Nadal was piloting that plane!

  • Thank you JFK I love you.

All european airlines flying into Spain know that most of the spanish pilots from Iberia, airnostrum and Spanair are plain assholes. They behave rude and unprofessional on the radio every day. I just love to hear them squirming in other countries trying to speak english or trying to copy a correct clearance with a correct read back. People with private licenses and no experience have better skills then these clowns.

  • that controller needs to teach an english class to all the foreign pilots who he's having problems with.

  • 1:49 I don't think you can sir, but if you say you can, I don't think you can... :) HAHAHAHA love the sarcasm... gotta love the new yorkers....

  • @Capteagle hahaha hahahah this spanish pilot doesn't know shit of english!

  • love them NEW YAWKERS!!!

  • This one is not as funny as the chinese one... and just wait till you hear the Jamaican one....

  • wow, this poor atc just cant get a break

  • If air controller had spoken with "BBC accented English", no problem would have happened, but this american accent renders coversation difficult to whom is not American. In Europe people learns english with audio recorded from British actors, not american ones!

  • And Iberia it is not a bad airline; IT IS A GOOD AIRLINE. The most important air company flying to Latin America. It's joined British Airways to become the third most important group in the world. A particulary mistake from a particulary pilot doesn't mean anything else but a mistake.

  • Holy sh!t, this was my biggest fear of all when I was younger, cause my english wasn't good but now is like having a casual conversation, I'm currently working on my multi-engine license!!!

  • liamkirkham you can't be serious right? Ok what was the controller suppose to

say huh? The never of some people!

  • Airwaveeeeeeeeee

  • 'Hold short' and 'stop the plane', repeated clearly and slowly several times is 'non-standard', difficult terminology? Come on you guys! These are pro INTERNATIONAL pilots, and should be more than well versed in English, ATC terminology, and common sense. Forget accents. 'Hold short' is 'hold short' in Britain, the US, Australia, France, etc. ATC uses English all over the world.

No excuse for the pilot there, however you guys might try to excuse him.

  • @Kamadev888 Im British and I didn't even understand some words there from the controller. Spaniards are used to British accent. American accent is very hard for them to understand. U should try to use an internacional or standard accent like BBC World channel... or pure British accent, since we invented the language, lol xD

  • @AngelGilmour may i remind you all this isn't an pure american accent, it's quite bostonian/new york/new jersey/etc thick.

personally i think that that pilot should be listening to the tower, they know more about where everyone is and the pilot just simply can't fly a plane and watch for traffic at the same time....

  • @Juticar I just know two things: I didn't even understand some words there from the american airport and the controller could make an effort trying to minimize his strong bronx accent if he's consciuos that there are ppl from all the world and not only american. So, standard / international accent please. If a british plane flies to Argentina wouldn't understand a thing because they learn Castilian and not a bad copy of it from our colonies :)

  • did he cut in front of you? yeah but he's bigger than us! :-)

  • At Heathrow we have the problem with language barriers atleast once a day but I've never heard a controller get rounded up by it. In america, as soon as something don't go the way the controllers want they seem to try and solve the problem by making the pilots nervous and confused.

Seems like a field trip to an european airport would be a good idea to include in the american ATC course.

  • @EuroPiIot Would be funny regarding language, except thousands of lives are literally on the line. Therefore the ATC controller has to be harsh. Safety first!

  • @X46RAPTOR Considering the fact that peoples lives are at stake, he has to be professional. That means dealing with a problem calm and methodologic just like pilots are trained to do in an emergency. To become frustrated like this air controller did is not the way to go.

  • @EuroPiIot He wasn't frustrated he was just telling the pilot to stop in a much more intense manner. It his fault he does not speak english and that in itself is a breach of international aviation regulations.

  • I love New York ACT love them RLOL.... Learn English bitch

  • If u ask me, this is mostly down to the American controller not the Spanish pilot. I'm english and I couldn't understand him too well! I've never had a problem with Iberia pilots before. Listen to the amount of non standard phraseology the jfk controller is using! Not surprised the pilot had difficulties.

  • @liamkirkham well maybe you're right..but the "hold short rwy 4r" was pretty clear to me and the pilot didn't seem to understand a bit of it.

  • @chrigiammann apparently it was 4l :-)

  • that's not the first time JFK had issues with Iberia's A340-600s

  • @Aeromar27 that's too bad man

  • Yeah, I'm not xenophobic or anything like a lot of people however for a job like being an airline pilot it's pretty crucial to be able to speak english fluently. I heard this one and also another with an airchina 747 it just seems really dangerous to me that some of these guys can barely understand english. It's like a disaster waiting to happen.

  • i like that brooklyn accent

  • Its not a brooklyn accent

  • I wonder if the NY controller drives his car like he tells people to drive their planes

  • if there is not jobs in spain they should go to china. they what the Australians do.

  • Me gustaría veros hablando español.....

Ah no sabias? Twat

Y no insultes!

  • @AngelGilmour hahaha in yer last two responses uve started with the same statement. And dude, who the fuck made spellin mistakes in spanish. at least not me... plus chill the fuck out, this is youtube, It aint fuckin Yale or some shit....second off, who gives a shit if ur half british half gachupin.... i aint give a crap... n who the fuck are u to tell me not to insult people??? U think yer so fuckin classy n so fuckin snoby?? Yer a fuckeen moron dude

  • @americanblues05 Warning troll on the web! Yeah, I'm whatever u want mate... however, I've watched ur videos and the only one here who looks like a moron is u. In GBR many ppl would think ur a paki or a moron, but not!! Ur a Mexi-taco!!. I bet u would like to be white in order to fit in the American society. Bye troll. I give u an advise: try to be polite ok? I don't care if this is yt or real life. But... What can we expect from a troll like u? ;)

  • @AngelGilmour Apparently I matter that much to u... thank you, U took the time to spend some time on my account. You are that pathetic. In GBR people can fuck off, I aint got no interest on spending my time trying to figure out what european douschebags think of me. And no baby, I wont take any advise from a fuckin racist as you. That is even worse man, that shows the kinda prick u are. Last wish: may u die painfully and burn in fucking hell. Have a good day

  • @americanblues05 Nope, I live in a peacefull country where human rights are respected by Government, Police and Justice, not in a country fulled of corruption, mafia and drug cartels. Probably you moved on America looking for the peace you didn't find in your home land. Good night sir!

  • @americanblues05 btw, when speaking English try to remember that rule that says u have to add the "s" in verbs when is in third singular person. "Yeah, it totally makeS sense mate". U don't even know how to speak Spanish and English and u dare to criticize the Spanish pilot? Yeah, that's typical from Latin American people. I don't need more proofs. Ur real trolls. I bet u answer insulting again.

  • @AngelGilmour you probably should try to remember how to fuckin read properly. It said: ya totally make sense. ya=you Oh shiiit..... it wasnt too hard, was it? n whats the deal with u feelin so superior eh? Dude, yer Spanish!!!!!!! like... I would respect ya way more if u were from some Scandinavian country or sumthing... but dude... Spaaain!!!! N ya bet right...... fuck you!!!

  • @americanblues05 I'm Spanish, from the country who conquested the half of the word and your Shittymexico. Hey you're from Mexico? How dare you? I would respect you if you were Canadian. ;) But nooo! You're a taco pretending to be American. And if you just write English in a proper way, I would understand it. Do you live in Arizona? I bet you're worried about the SB1070. You'd better run like hell, back to Xitlotzingo, lol!

  • @AngelGilmour American!!??? You didnt creep me enough mate. Getting a degree from Queen's University.... any idea of the reputation of such school, and where it is? I dont think so.... so anyways.... the deal is, once u play the racist card, people realize the kind of "person" you are. And you should be worried about terrorist blowing up your fucking cities...British and Spanish pricks died those two days... recall?? have fun haha

  • @americanblues05 Yeah, we've got a problem with immigration issues in the EU. The same problem America has with Mexico. That's why I support SB1070. Le Pen and BNP must rule in the EU!! lol U have showed the kind of person u are showing all that unrespect for the people who have died in Islamic attacks in London and Madrid and our forces in Mid-west. Thank u for unveiling the mystery! Do u think the same about Sept 11? Wow, ur very thankfull to the society who opens its doors to you!

  • @AngelGilmour Society who opens the door to me? hahaha u stupid fuck I live in Canada.... oh god u know... just stop, all that comes outta yer mouth its just pure shit, so just knock if off bro

  • @americanblues05 Yeah, Canada, a British colony and u've already insulted to the British who have died in those fanatic attacks. But, what can we expect from a Latin American troll who enjoys the welfare state from another people? ;) Pay the bill for ur medicines! XD

  • @americanblues05 U just know swearing and insulting?! Too rude for a European like me and too typical from a Latin American troll like you. That's the difference between North American (European) and Sout America (where u have lost ur european roots in order to become Quetzalcoalt king again, just like Hugo Chavez, the same thing).

  • @AngelGilmour Indeed baby, roll with u, u fuckin eurofag

  • @americanblues05

  • @quikozska That’s not going to happen, because if you want to be an international pilot, you must speak either English OR the native language of the place you intend to fly to, and when in doubt, you speak english. You MUST understand english and be able to understand the basics of the job you’re doing. This is not funny. The Iberia pilot is clearly unqualified to be in that position.

  • @mmarconcini Iberia is well known to be an Airline full of sons of pilots, just been in the family they get the jobs, some are qualified others like this one, no! But the company is one of the best in maintenance, mechanics are much better than their pilots.

  • I am an airline pilot of a British airline. The controller was speaking heavily accented, very fast, non standard phraseology. No wonder the Iberia didn't know what the hell to do. The controller was crap!

  • haha

"did this guy cut in front of you?"

"uhh yea, he's bigger than us though"

  • don't mess with the tower!.....lol.

    Answer the question!

    Don't bud in line either!

  • Are you sure you are not talking about British "pay me evereything EU" Airways?

Probably Iberia employees are very agitated with britons abroad...

  • This air traffic controller now works at ISP airport.

  • I don't know why this guy isn't listening. While I agree with the old saying of Aviate, Navigate, Radiate, I don't think it applies on the ground.

  • this happens in chicago all the time

  • it means you have a license to fly a single engine airplane then you go through more training to get you mulit-engine endorsement. It just means now you can fly a plane with more than one engine.

  • i dont whant to bitch. but pilots who dont SPEAKA THE ENGLISH should not be flying. there are hundres of people on the plane and hundreds more on the other planes. if they dont listen to ATC there will be a accident. and many people would die. so for all the dummies out there. ATC IS ALWAYS RIGHT. pilot just needs to shut up listen and readback

  • Comment removed

  • thank you god someone that understands

    that!

  • Wow, the comment ATC is always right is a stupid one. That will get you killed flying. ATC is not god. ATC are people like you and me who make mistakes. you cant rely on them. You Listen to them but if they say something you dont like or dont want to do u dont have to do it as PIC you have the final authority of what to do with your plane. I hope your not a pilot cause that was a stupid stupid comment.

  • im not. but if you are your the one that should be grounded. if pilots dont listen then accidents happen. your foolish to even think my comment is stupid. there are there to controlll traffic. if a cops tell u to stop do u drive on or ignore him

  • The PIC can deviate from any ATC directive, all you have to do is notify them as soon as practicable. Do you really think ATC is always right. You need to look up so accident investigatons. Fly, navigate, communicate. You need to keep up on your FAR/AIM as well. Your comment was extremely stupid.

  • i dint whant to reply back, but your cometing the same as last. but in a nother context. read my last

if a cop tells u to stop do u roll down your window and tell him to fuck of and let u drive where u whant. i have some pilots that disagree with your comments. and if they would catch u doing shit like this with a plane they report u, no atc report needed.u will looose your licence

  • you obviously dont understand what im saying. This pilot in the video was just stupid. And he did the wrong thing. i was only commenting on you saying ATC is always right, which is dead wrong. You cant compare ATC to a police officer. Not the same thing at all. Im sorry but you dont know what you are talking about. I know your not a pilot.

  • ATC are not ALWAYS right!!!some accidents happened because of them...now, the problem on here is "the accent", this "gringo" knowing that the pilot doesnt have a native English,is getting upset because of that...

  • It's clear Iberia didn't follow directions...he took two turns he was not supposed to take. THATS the problem!

  • ATC is nowhere near always right. MOREOVER, ATC is NEVER SUPPOSED TO GET AN ATTITUDE. No matter how retarded the pilot, ATC IS THERE TO HELP THE PILOT. This controller is EXTREMELY unprofessional.

In this case, ATC should have dealt with the pilot with patience and file a full formal complaint. The pilot was in the wrong, but JFK is HUGE. What if it was the crew's first time there? Attitudes like that will help no one.

  • check FAA rules

since 1999 pilots can only deviate from atc orders if outside view or tcas says else.

indeed the pilot is an idiot. and yes jfk is big.

    put it doesnt change rules

and there are many cases like this where pilots ignore rules that are there to make everything safer

  • Once again you show how stupid you are. The PIC has the final authority at what to do with an airplane. They just have to notify ATC as soon as they can. LOOK it up in the FAR/AIM buddy. this pilot was just stupid i realize that and im not saying it was right now to follow directions. But to say ATC is always right is just a stupid comment. If your not comfortable with something ATC tells you to do, you dont have to do it, its your plane and your life. as PIC you have the Final say.

  • dude, seriously... I hope you do not even have a recreational pilot license. PIC is the final authority but going against ATC clearances, is a good way to see your license go bye-bye. Dogsofwar is right. Pilots can only deviate in case of emergency or to avoid violating an FAR, after which they must promptly inform ATC.

MY only point was that: ATC could have and should have been way more professional and Iberia needs to do a better job with their pilots.

  • Ok its funny because you dont understand. If your flying along and ATC tells you to make a left turn to the west, well you look at your charts and know there is a mountain there. What the controller ment to say was make a right turn. As in ATC makes mistakes too meaning never just assume they are correct they are not god of the sky, they are people who makes mistakes. Dont be afraid of questioning ATC if you think they might be wrong. AS for this due in the vid, he is stupid

  • That's what I said. You can deviate in case of emergency or if what they say will make you violate a rule. However, if it's not a life or death thing, you should ask for an amended clearance before deciding to go against what they just told you

  • Ok we both can agree on that. I commenting of the Fact that ATC is not always right.

  • correct, although is pretty wise to follow their commands, specially when on ground....

  • i totally agree with you.

  • Iberian stickin it to the man...My favorite is around 2:48....nahh.- NO!

  • the problem is not the pilot´s english ,he said he don´t understand because he didn´t want to hold posittion.

Is like :Ohh I´m not gonna stop the plane so I´ll say I don´t understand and I´ll do what I want

  • ROFL!!! Never a dull moment at JFK

  • does anyone think the controller sounds like peter griffin?

  • Im hispanic, and I speak fluent English, and im still gonna cuz that dumbass pilot out! Why dont these airlines train their pilots on better English communication?? I dont get it! Its the international language!

  • Iberia crew is very special
