Well, she has a twin sister named Susannah whom Prince was engaged to. He wrote this song about her and gave it to his new side project The Family (St. Paul Peterson, Susannah, Jerome, Jellybean, Eric Leeds). Prince gave this song to the Family, a band that broke up soon after the release of their first album in 1985. Sinead O'Connor wasn't involved in that band. Sinead O'Connor released her first album in 1987 it was an alternative/punk hit. However, having influences in lots of genres, her manager heard the Family's recording and persuaded her to record it, Sinead helped to produce it, and her version becoming a huge pop hit is why Prince even performs it.

I love him so much. I like both versions of this song. Prince's version is awesome for funky times and melodramatic miming, whereas Sinead's version is good for depressing times and melodramatic miming.

Sinead O'Connor flat out made this hers much like Aretha made Otis' "Respect" hers. But I love it that Prince performs it, which he still does very well. His version is very good and only pales because Sinead's is so outstanding.
He should always play this song, I'm glad he's made it part of his repitoire.

If what ever reason Prince wants to do his song.. money wouldn't be one. In fact I'm sure he was quite happy Sinead had such a huge hit with it - especially if as you state he thought it wouldn't be a hit.

It amazes me that people decide to compare singers & musicians. I love his version of this song as well as Sinead O'conners. It's not about his being better or not, Music is personal. La mia umile opinione: La peggiore performance che abbia mai visto in assoluto. Prince lo trovo veramente pessimo, i suoi atteggiamenti mi innervosiscono. Forse farà quest'effetto anche al resto degli italiani. Infatti qui è misconosciuto. Ma d'altronde come potrebbe essere il contrario? ha sfornato pochissime canzoni orecchiabili, e pessime melodie. Questo lo dico dopo aver ascoltato tutto quello che potevo di Pince, e questo è il mio primo ed ultimo commento su questo cantante!
