While I sympathize with you Josh, I do not agree with the logic behind tipping. No one should be paid $2.13 but employers are required to make up the difference if tipping doesn't add up to minimum wage. I don't understand why customers are on the hook for helping subsidize one's low wage. I also believe that tipping should be solely based on one's performance not on the price of the bill. It has nothing to do with being cheap but one shouldn't feel entitled to be paid 15-20% of the bill.
"above and beyond", aka, quote on quote your server is being friendly............??? wtf lol........since when is being nice to someone consider as going above and beyond? if you consider this as going above and beyond then perhaps you have been serving too long and need to get out and find a new profession!
I've been in this industry for 13 years now planning to do so for ever if you don't tip, do not go out, It' a business. It's bigger than you. That's why I work fine dining.
@stevocooko "It's a business. It's bigger than you." Oh really? Then why do so many businesses close if the businesses stop getting sufficient patronage? It seems to me that the customers control the fates of businesses and not the other way around, but what the hell do I know? I just know economics. "If you don't tip, do not go out." Oh, I didn't know that being fascist and telling people how to spend their hard-earned money was okay in America. I must have missed the memorandum.
As you point out -- we talk to each other! It amazes me how many people can't seem to wrap their minds around this fact. If they treat me like crap, you can be I'll remember them and tell my friend when they're sat in her section next week!
The one thing most of you American rednecks don't realize is that I've been to other countries that don't have tipping. The service was not bad over there. People didn't need to be tipped to do a good job. Do you need to tip your doctor for him to do a good job?
No, you do not need to tip your doctor on top of his wage. Once my doctor starts making $2.15 an hour for his services, though, bet your ass I'll compensate him.
I've seen servers at i-hop in a certain area like northrige, vannuys CA gets the worst tips ever, usually a dollar or two on the table because everyone that goes there are hispanic. I'm hispanic my self but i understands how tipping works. Poor servers, no offend but some hispanic people will never learn.
Are you guys kidding? If the wage was bumped up, to minimum wage or whatever, with no tips- the service would SUCK! Why work your ass off? Tips come from happy people but if we're not getting tipped, then wheres the motivation to make everyone happy?
The service wouldn't suck. I went to Australia on vacation. It was just fine. It was great not having to deal with the fake, prissy BS you get in America.
PS, I'm only leaving 1 or 2 dollars in tips regardless of what I get from now on. You guys make more than a lot of people out there, I've heard figures of 40,000 to even $3K a week, and you whine that you're not paid enough?! BS.
That's your choice, as it's always been. It really seems like you're full of hate. Most servers don't make that much money- maybe las vegas servers. A job is a job. It's honest work. I feel like I give sincere service; I like what I do, I really do. It beats sitting in a cubicle all day staring at a wall. It gives me time to complete school (graduating this quarter) and gives me time to relax with my fiance. Not all servers are as honest as I am, be careful of DNA in your food. It happens.
It's because of a-holes like you that I write Congress and restaurant chains, show them comments like yours, and tell them why the tip system needs to be abolished.
@interneti , "the tip system" can't be abolished because it's a matter of courtesy, it's a non-written law. But the salary of 2.13/h needs to go up to at least $7/hrs(in CA it's 8/hr). Can't afford to tip? Don't go out.
Cute - but, honestly, if non-tippers didn't show up, servers would actually probably make more. I mean, think about it - more time for people that actually matter (that is, tippers) is freed up by this solution, and having one less table or bar guest gives you a few extra minutes to ensure total satisfaction of your REAL guests, thus increasing your earning potential. It's simple logic, really - as is the logic behind tipping. Nice try though.
"That would be a perfect world, moron. Get off the drugs."
Actually, that's not a "perfect world". That's what actually happens. A perfect world would be one where everyone is a gracious and appropriate tipper. (Or where poor tippers are systematically refused service.)
@interneti You're a mal-educated, self righteous idiot. No one with any true class, dignity, self respect, respect for others, tact, or common sense would be saying the things that you've been saying on here. Put in an honest days work by serving others, and gain a little humility. You clearly need it.
why does the percentage of how much you tip keep going up, if inflation goes up the money you actually pay will automatically be higher I don't understand how it's gone form 10% to 15% to 20% now.
As a veteran of the restaurant industry for 14 years, an average tip is considered 20%. No server should come up to your table expecting your life servings to be handed over to them. On the other hand people should realize that most servers work very hard to earn a living. If your server is attentive and polite you should never leave less than 20%.
@Surfer041 And if you're a true American who believes in individual rights, you have no right to tell other people how they should spend their hard-earned money.
@Surfer041 Then my next question to you is this: How does a percentage of your bill in any way reflect the level of service? If, for example, you eat at TGI Fridays and order baby back ribs, 20% of that would be higher than if you ordered a burger. However, it takes the server the same amount of effort to bring it to you and attend to what you need. Therefore, the difference in tip should be zero.
@MelkorHimself I believe a tip should be based on two things. 1. The amount of the check, and 2. The quality of the service. If your bill is 40 and the server was above average, bump the tip up to ten. If your bill is 60 and the server was below average (slow, unattentive) bump it down to 8 or 9. Being in the buisness I know how hard some servers work and knowing they only get 2.13 an hour (which wont be changing) I think they should be rewarded for doing a good job.
@Surfer041 But the fact remains that X% of your bill has nothing to do with the level of service. If a family of five goes to a regular restaurant and leaves $10 on a $50 bill and then goes to a fancy restaurant for Christmas and leaves $50 on a $250 bill, but the level of service was the same, why should the server at the regular restaurant make so much less than the server at the fancier restaurant? If the level of service was the same, then the tip must be the same.
@MelkorHimself We can go back and forth on this issue all day. I will always believe that 20% of the bill is not too much to ask for a tip. If you are at a high end establishment, chances are that server will be working much harder and making more trips that say at Fridays or Applebees. Bottom line if you leave 20% you will be appreciated and asked to return. We remember the good tippers and never forget the bad ones.
Actually the phrase "INSURE' is because people used to leave tips BEFORE they got their food. Imagine if it were still that way today...You could serve people according to what you KNOW they are going to tip...not according to what they may or may not tip
Its understandable coz they came from poor country where 1 us dollars equals to a kingdom! But despite all that reasons tipping is about appreciating people!! Btw 10% white who dont tip are mostly White Trashhhhh
Actually, Ive found that it depends on where you work...Mexican and Black people tip me far better in the area I am in now. Same restaurant...different location. Almost all guests tip well. It's really about WHERE you work...Not to say that I don't get my share of bad tippers...sometimes they wander over to our neck of the woods.
it should be normal when people dont tip and good when people do tip, unfortunately you have got to a state when it is normal when people do tip and bad when they dont. Trying to pass it off as customary is nonsense as i know many americans who know its 'expected' nature has gone too far.
"it SHOULD be normal when people don't tip and good when people do tip"
Well, I'm sorry that you don't like it...That's just the way it is here. I'm sure your servers in the UK make far more than our servers do. And in a lot of cultures, tipping is added to the bill or it is not expected or customary...But here it is customary, so just get with the program already!
There is essentially no tipping in the usa, its basically a tax that has been disguised as almost something someone is doing voluntarily - when lets face it, americans are well known for not their image in the eyes of other people. Just add the value of the tip to the product and stop trying to f**king pretend you are all nice generous people.
Contrary to what you may think, not all Americans are pricks. Don't get me wrong, I am a prick, but I am not all Americans. So why don't you simmer down and chill the fuck out. Thanks for watching!
@3BallJosh contrary to what you said, tipping was started in 17th century England by tavern patrons. they would give the server extra money so the server could by themselves food and drinks at the tavern as well. This was long before acronyms were even used. Also, you saying "don't fuck with the people who handle your food" really just makes you look like a jackass and makes people less likely to listen to what you say. That last part was intended as constructive criticism, not an insult.
@hrtuvchrome thanks for the info. I did not know that. As for the not fucking with the people who handle your food thing goes, I know it may make me sound like a jackass, but it amazes me how people will be such assholes to the people who feed them. While I can honestly say I have never spit in anyone's food (or anything else for that matter) there is a lot of people who do. I just wanted to serve a warning to the people. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.
You are right...we are not nice and generous people...we are paid to be that way..Now taxes....you have to pay them...tips you don't have to pay...so basically they are not a tax..they are customary...but if you think that it's okay to just shit on someone's customs...then go right ahead...We are glad to have your foreign ass.
so someone who dosent tip is instantly a prick and someone who does tip suddenly becomes an outstanding person? interesting way of catergorising people.
yes, and thats the way it should be. "Oh the waitress was rude, abusive, dropped our food, im only going to tip her 10%" - a tip shouldnt even be contemplated at that point.
I don't care if someone doesn't tip because the server was rude, or just plain lazy. That circumstance doesn't deserve a tip. I agree with you 100%. Who wants to pay for bad service? But to say that it's not necessary because well, it's optional so no matter what the server does to please me, I'm still only leaving 10% because it's not part of OUR culture...Well, that's more than inconsiderate and rude.
the problem is, you are supplementing your income by relying on tips. Thats not right at all. Tips should be the added perk on top of it not form the basis of your wage. I question many things in many cultures that i deem detrimental that from an insiders view they might not see. Add the value of the tip (20%) to the product and end tipping - problem solved.
Totally 100% agree with you there...They should be automatically added so that the basis of the wage is not so shaky...Servers wouldn't be so rude about it if they were getting paid a decent wage. Then if someone left extra it would be a perk and if not...well, that wouldn't be so bothersome.
Question: if the tip is added for the 8 or more, does management not give you that tip? Another thing: yes I saw the movie, you know the one. Now what do we do when the waiter/waitress comes up to the table, chewing and snapping gum, and goes, "whaddaya want?" Now my first reaction is maybe to leave, but say I'm in a hurry for a burger. I have a saying: "No servee, no tipee" which means I expect to be acknowledged as existing, Trying to get past the "I don't see you" thing. It works both ways.
In Denmark were I live we never tip anybody ever! Only if you kinda show of having lots a money or is hittin on a waitress :) It is weird how different cultures we have in that way.. I mean the tip money is not official, as far as being a legal obligation right? So if a meal says 4 dollars then isn't that what you shoud pay? Instead of lets say 5 dollars and 50 cents?
No, Because servers are paid nothing after taxes. We have to be taxed for the food you guests all eat.
we dont even see our hourly wages. It is expected, if you want to pay the sticker price, you need to go to a buffet or fast food restaraunt.
We wait tables to support ourselves, most of us are in college with out financial aid, and driving cars that are falling apart and paying rent, and cant even afford to eat at the restaraunt we work at, even with the discount we have.
What do the servers make per hour? If they're highly paid, then maybe no tip is needed. Did you hear the guy? $2.13/hr is SHIT PAY. $10.00/hr is shit pay, so the system HERE assumes tips will be paid. How IS the service there anyway?
Well they make standard money like everyone else, so as I said they only get tips from very rich or thankfull customers who really enjoyed the food or/and service. But yeah I understand how it works in USA now.
I shouldn't have to tip. It's called TIPPING for a reason. If you don't like your tips get another job! It's not MY fault your boss only pays you 2.00 an hour! Why would you take a job that only pays 2.00 an hour?!
Also, some people assume I won't tip and then treat me like shit then they definitely don't get a tip. I used to tip but it was never worth it because servers these days EXPECT tips instead of trying to WORK for them.
please just dont go out to restaurants and give black folk a bad name just keep going to McD and KFC its asshole thinking like yours that cause servers to assume all black folk are the same you dumb ass...really get another job is that your level of education
Most of the world works on the theory that if a restaurant cannot pay it's staff a fair wage then it is not viable just like any other business why should employees have work for tips? another word for that is SLAVERY.
Stop tipping make owners pay their staff a fair wage for their work
The flaw in that logic is that the mere act of not tipping is going to do nothing more than piss off your server. If you want to truly protest the unfair wages, you should stop going to restaurants all together. That way you take money from the restaurant, not just the server
the flaw in that reasoning though is that if the customer actually gave a shit about you to begin with they would tip no problem, no questions asked. Someone who actually has no problem tipping will tip you, the guy that is a cheap bastard isn't suddenly going to boycott restaurants for your cause in regards to the issue of unfair wage regulations.
Not tipping only hurts the server, not the restaurant. You obviously grew up with cheap parents, so therefor you are cheap. try waiting tables for 6 months. Then come back and run your mouth.
I live in Australia , staff in eatery's are paid a proper salary that they can live on, tipping is not part of our culture due to this, so your point is pretty stupid
I think the warning at the end was just that---a warning to morons. I've had the misfortune of serving plenty of jerks, and I've never done anything to anyone's food, but I've certainly seen it done by other servers. I think we all have at some time. I think Josh is just being kind and warning mean people who are too stupid to figure that out.
And yeah, "if you don't like it, get another job" is a lousy thing to say. Most servers are serving because they ARE working towards a better job.
75% of diners are idiots. They complain that tipping is an option and they shouldn't have to and that our employers (the restaurant) should pay us more. That's fine they want to go that route. Let my restaurant pay me more and you 10 dollar dish will now cost you 20 dollars enjoy.
@grrngirl Tipping is optional. Gratuity is meant for those who give exceptional service. Yes, if employers pay their employees higher wages, the food prices will increase. That's why I just try to avoid eating at sit-down restaurants altogether.
I agree that this is silly. This guy wants us to tip twice. I'd like to know if the only job he can get is a waiter job because if he hates what he deals with so much, why doesn't he find a different kind of job?
I'm not saying I expect to tip twice. All I'm saying is if the server puts forth more than average effort, especially if you continue to make ridiculous requests (or make him/her refill your drink 20 times because you constantly chug the shit) then a little extra would be appreciated. As for a different job, I got one. I'm now doing tech support, because i got sick of cheap fucks such as yourself. thanks for watching
no, but where 18% grats do no exist, $5 on a $30 would be below average. I would say never go less than 10% because servers are taxed on their net sales... if you go lower than 10%, don't expect good or even any service next time that you come in.
I am a cocktail server at a casino in San Bernardino and nobody tips. I think if you dont tip then you need to get your own goddamn drinks! I hate the people who say "I dont have any more money" because they have it all in the machine or the people who say " I will catch you later". I have seen so be warned that if you do not tip then you WILL lose all of your money. A penny, nickel, or dime, is not a tip!! It isnt 1930. Today $1 at least!
There are guests at my restaurant that tip well every time they come in. When they walk in the door, their drinks are prepared and served within minutes after they are recognized. Their food order is put in and served in under 10 min; and all the servers and managers stop by to chit-chat and make sure they're taken care of. That's how you dine out. For regular 10%ers, all new servers get warned not to spend too much time on them, and focus on their other tables. Sad but true...
"Above and beyond" - Wow! Purple Hearts for you all.
I think most of your issues are with your employers screwing you, not customers not tipping. Put the service charge in the price of the food and everyone is happy right? Oh, not the restaurant owners 'cos then they'd have to pay all the taxes and wages...
BTW, if I was your employer and I saw this video you would be looking for a new job tomorrow.
Funny you mention that. My employer at the time (I have left the food service industry) did in fact see it. She thought it was great (as well as my other restaurant PSAs)
Well Josh, that speaks volumes about where you worked when you were the undisputed guru of restaurant service and etiquette.
I can vision it now, "Josh, that video is great, let's surreptitiously threaten our customers so they tip more and generally feel intimidated. Can we add our restaurant's logo somewhere?"
It's not like you wouldn't be recognised with that ???? on your chin. BTW, "Kids eat free night" - I don't remember seeing that at any [real] restaurant...
I'm glad you feel that way. There should be a charge. Just for you, pretend every single time you take yourself out in civilized society that you owe $10 more per person in your party on any bill. So for just you, on a $10 meal, you should SEE $20. There you are. I fixed your problem of being an ill-mannered monkey.
I don't believe that thinking you are twelve years old, based on your lack of adult comprehension, intellect or grammar, is either "tasteless" or "random".
And, BTW, it was you who insulted me first without cause.
To the first part of your comment, you're incorrect and still incoherent.
And for the second part, you're a liar. You insulted me blatantly and irresponsibly.
You just keep coming back and flashing around how ignorant and poor mannered you are. Why not just kill yourself and make the world a better place? We don't need anymore burger-flippers like you in the world.
You just keep coming back and slamming your face into the moron button.
Did you not even read your original post or any posts after? Or did you just randomly have your grandmother's pussy in your face while you were typing?
Look, I'm not coming back here so don't bother posting again. You're just an ignorant child who likes to shoot his mouth off and then cry when someone tells you the truth in how much of an idiot you are.
i think i love you! that is the most sensible and nicest way to talk about tipping. i am a server and i tip out 3.5 percent of my sales, not tips, sales. so whether or not i make money other people do. thank you for saying this even tho there are still huge fucking assholes in this world.
If you're dissatisfied with your income (including tips), get out of the industry. How is complaining going to help? You're wasting your energy and time just by complaining. Get a job where your income doesn't depend on tips. Stop complaining. I'm speaking for your benefit.
I would never ever work in an industry where my job depends on tips.
Riiiight. So we all quit. Then what? Who's going to serve you? I guess you could serve yourself, but you seem like such an uptight jerkwad I can't really imagine such a thing.
If the restaurant paid us fair wages, the prices would go up and you'd essentially be tipping me anyway...regardless of the quality of my service.
Tipping in America is totally blown out of proportion. If you don't tip, you will get poor service next time. Guess what? I won't return to the same place next time.
Everywhere you go, employees expect tips.
Restaurants, hair salons, airports, hotels, cabs, etc. That's total bullshit. You're not my charity case. I pay for my bill, and that's all you're going to get. Your employer is responsible for your own wages. Thank you.
So fuck the people who are working solely for tips to make a living or to pay for school to get a decent paying job in the future. Fuck the people who have to actually work to get ahead in life right?
You're going to run out of places to eat. Like he said, we talk...and when I get a bad tip I make damn sure that if that customer comes in again, and I see them, that their new server knows about them.
Im a black guy who waits tables and i gotta say man if it wasnt 4 white people i would be broke.black peps are posers always have and always will be.its a shame i must depend on another race to put me through school man.you take your bill total and times that by 15 percent.we will work on 20percent later as you people cant tip 15.
Yeah, I've seen black coworkers cussing out the hostesses for sitting them with black people. It really IS sad. If you ever get the chance to get a table of Japanese business men. Jump on it. Every time I waited on a group of Japanese guys, they drank like a mofo and tip like crazy.
I used to drive a cab. Blacks don't tip as a rule, at least in Michigan, where they're entitled to take advantage of whitey, who after all, done them wrong. and arrogant? don't get me started.
i live in canada and even though servers do get tips at restaurants they get alot more than 2.13/hr......its minimum wage which can range from 8-10 bucks and hour depending on the province........2.13 is so low!
LOL!!!! Okay, well I don't eat at restaurants in America because of guys like you. So don't worry. I won't stiff you. But think about this for a second. Your demand for tips lost your employer a customer. Telling me to go eat at burger king is the equivalent of stopping somebody at the door of your restaurant and saying "we dont want your money". That is one helluva business strategy. No wonder so many restaurants go out of business, but there is a burger king or mcdonalds on every block.
When I was a server, I was actually pretty decent at my job. But now that I have a "real job" I don't give a shit where you or anyone else for that matter eats.
Here are a few of my tips. 1. We dont care how much you get paid. Sorry but I have enough things to worry about as it is. 2. Everybody runs their ass off if they have a job. And many of us dont get tipped. Amazing concept but yeah, other people work too. 3. "Never fuck with people who handle your food". Yes, I agree. food handlers like you are NOT professionals so you will stoop to things like spitting or sneezing or shitting in food you serve to people.
1. the $2.13 per hour is to cover the tax on our tips, so we are essentially working for just the tips. If you have too much to worry about, get a big mac. 2. Again, we're working for the tips. As a customer, you are paying for the service...tip accordingly if you are making us go above and beyond. For the record, I have never done anything to anyone's food. However, there are many that do. THAT is why I gave that warning. 4. Munch my taint you cheap bastard.
shrededward you fuckin moron! lets not overdramatize and look down on servers........these are down people putting themselves through college for the most part! and if someone actually had their food shitted on than i say they must have done something hella fucked up to deserve that!
sigh... Rico, I don't know how many times I have to say this but I guess more than once because it obviously fails to get through a few rough craniums, so maybe once more in caps...
"WHY SHOULD ANY CUSTOMER CARE WHAT THE STAFF ARE PAID?"
Now see, the problem is that only these self servers think that others should care. Nobody in any other self-respecting field believes that the customers or clients or whatever care what you make. And that is because most people live in the real world.
no actually you are the one that doesn't get it you cheap jew! seriously shrededward don't be so fuckn ignorant .....i really do hope you get hit by a fkn bus on your way to the "real world" tomorrow!
15% tip was good in the 60's when the waiter/waitress was the server, busser, and in some cases bartender. Tipout was far less. IT'S 2008 PEOPLE, tipout is higher and usually taken out on sales. 20% is the new minimum, period.
Fuck that !! If I want to tip 15%, then I'll tip 15% You all really have some nerve making YouTube videos demanding that people tip you 20%. Keep in mind that we as customers DON'T HAVE TO TIP YOU SHIT. Instead of being arrogant enough to be mad at what someone leaves for a tip, maybe you should be glad that people tip at all.
many people wait tables while trying to obtain a college degree. Especially since it's a job with flexible hours so that you can work around your schedule. My thing is that if you can't afford a $15 tip, you can't afford the $100 meal.
yah don't be so ignorant nikkipooh2008, serving large in part is a young persons job, young people who are working p/t along with going to school f/t. it is a means to and end! doing what we have to do! so do what you are supposed to do when going out and tip you cheap bastard!!!
Im a waitress who is in college, thank you very much. It is the best job for someone like me who has to pay for their own education, who cannot put 40hrs a week in due to school. Also high schoolers do the job because its one of the only jobs that will hire them. Be proud that they are trying to help themselves at a young age. Maybe even help them out by tipping. Broaden your mind and be thoughtful of others.
Here's what I noticed: waiters who get tipped ALL THE TIME are like good salesmen. They make the effort to CONNECT with the customer. Once that's done it doesn't matter if there are a few mistakes here in there, the person likes they waiter, they had an overall pleasant experience, the'll most likely tip well and come back.
exactly...but there are some assholes who think "oh my goodness, the food was awesome, you were great, blah blah blah" and give a buck and some change on a $40...it's happened to me many times
I think it also depends where you work. I get a lot of tourists at my place, and sometimes they'll leave 2 dollars on a 50 dollar check, for example, since there is no tipping in their countries. Some days half the business is tourists who won't tip. They don't even expect you to be nice and charming. But overall I usually leave the place with a minimum of 15%, because of the tables that do tip.
If bad tables are not the exception rather than the rule where you work, maybe you can find a place that attracts better demographics. I don't think America's tipping trends are going to change any time soon...
But this sense of entitlement is bullshit. I am a waiter myself and have worked with waiters who expect minimum 15% for doing very little. I wouldn't tip a server who (example) talks to his/her buddies and doesn't make a trip once my whole meal except to give me the check when I haven't asked for it with a big fake smiling "THANK YOU"
As for the "Above and beyond the call of duty" thing, I don't go in a restaurant with a notepad and take points off here and there. If the waiter is pleasant (no juggling or magic tricks required), my meal is served hot, the waiter is there when I need him/her, etc, then yes I give 20% or more.
There shouldn't be a MINIMUM tip. As a customer it's my right to get my meal the way I ordered it in a timely fashion with clean silverware and refills: That's BASIC. It's included in the price of the meal.
extra work for running they are in the customer service industry that means satisfy the customer no matter how difficult they are... but at the same time i do tip 20-30% if you deserve it ... i will have to admit though i had a waitress that was so bad i gave her tip to the manager that night...
P.S. How about when 4-6 people go to dinner together? At the end of the night everyone throws some cash in the middle and skates!......Those are times the tip can be virtually non-existant too...and the last diner to pay, pays the most!@
Yeah! Why do blacks almost always tip the worst, make the nastiest MESS and want the most service? Most doctors are cheap too! P.S. Even if all you have is a cup of coffee for 50 cents, the MINIMUM tip is always $1.00. 20 pct is the standard today. Also, the waiter is not responsible for a problem with the food but is responsible for handling the problem. AND if you have a big family table with babies you still have to tip per head...
Josh, this was a very informative video which I enjoyed. I did NOT know servers are only paid $2.13 an hour and basically lived off tips. That blows. Especially for idiots that don't do a good job.
Now, from a customer's view: I've always been a fantastic tipper (20-25% of the bill) *IF* I get great service. If I don't, then they will get 10%.
What I consider great service: Not ever having to ask for anything. If my water glass is always topped off (a task in itself), or I never have to ask for ketchup when I order a burger, that automatically constitutes 20%. If the server is charming (polite, funny, etc), they get 25%. If they're a dipshit that can't get an order right, don't come around and refill drinks, and never ask how the meal is? 10%.
As for auto gratuities: if 15% is added to the bill and it's just standard service (see the dipshit comment), then they get just that 15% and I feel I paid my share of a tip. If, however, they are the star that deserves a 25% tip, I will add in that extra 10% because they deserve it.
I don't feel I'm overly demanding when I'm at a restaurant and would never fuck with a waiter (I DO know they are handling my food).
since 15% is the standard, I work for 20%. even if i'm having a crappy day, I am still friendly. I'll make jokes (I wouldn't order the tuna sallad sandwich...cause we don't have that here)and I'm quick to refill glasses. It's usually me who asks if you need a refill instead of you asking me to refill it.

@torontothegood they are doing their jobs, but they work for tips
3BallJosh 9 months ago

That's why I work fine dining.
stevocooko 1 year ago
@stevocooko "It's a business. It's bigger than you." Oh really? Then why do so many businesses close if the businesses stop getting sufficient patronage? It seems to me that the customers control the fates of businesses and not the other way around, but what the hell do I know? I just know economics. "If you don't tip, do not go out." Oh, I didn't know that being fascist and telling people how to spend their hard-earned money was okay in America. I must have missed the memorandum.

people from Europe are worse tippers than American tippers overall.
mistacoffee01 1 year ago
The one thing most of you American rednecks don't realize is that I've been to other countries that don't have tipping. The service was not bad over there. People didn't need to be tipped to do a good job. Do you need to tip your doctor for him to do a good job?
Idiots.
interneti 2 years ago
No, you do not need to tip your doctor on top of his wage. Once my doctor starts making $2.15 an hour for his services, though, bet your ass I'll compensate him.
nekkidandrew 2 years ago
I absolutely love you and this video, I think that everything was said very well, thank you for standing up for the servers!
ILuvJesus355 2 years ago
I've seen servers at i-hop in a certain area like northrige, vannuys CA gets the worst tips ever, usually a dollar or two on the table because everyone that goes there are hispanic. I'm hispanic my self but i understands how tipping works. Poor servers, no offend but some hispanic people will never learn.
Dinibaby905 2 years ago
Are you guys kidding? If the wage was bumped up, to minimum wage or whatever, with no tips- the service would SUCK! Why work your ass off? Tips come from happy people but if we're not getting tipped, then wheres the motivation to make everyone happy?
Adraline 2 years ago
The service wouldn't suck. I went to Australia on vacation. It was just fine. It was great not having to deal with the fake, prissy BS you get in America.
PS, I'm only leaving 1 or 2 dollars in tips regardless of what I get from now on. You guys make more than a lot of people out there, I've heard figures of 40,000 to even $3K a week, and you whine that you're not paid enough?! BS.
interneti 2 years ago
That's your choice, as it's always been. It really seems like you're full of hate. Most servers don't make that much money- maybe las vegas servers. A job is a job. It's honest work. I feel like I give sincere service; I like what I do, I really do. It beats sitting in a cubicle all day staring at a wall. It gives me time to complete school (graduating this quarter) and gives me time to relax with my fiance. Not all servers are as honest as I am, be careful of DNA in your food. It happens.
Adraline 2 years ago
It's because of a-holes like you that I write Congress and restaurant chains, show them comments like yours, and tell them why the tip system needs to be abolished.
interneti 2 years ago
@interneti , "the tip system" can't be abolished because it's a matter of courtesy, it's a non-written law. But the salary of 2.13/h needs to go up to at least $7/hrs(in CA it's 8/hr). Can't afford to tip? Don't go out.
Tihbialdunav 2 years ago
HAHAHA, then you would get far less tips, and wouldn't be justified in getting the tips you get now anyways. You guys are scum, fuck off.
interneti 2 years ago
Cute - but, honestly, if non-tippers didn't show up, servers would actually probably make more. I mean, think about it - more time for people that actually matter (that is, tippers) is freed up by this solution, and having one less table or bar guest gives you a few extra minutes to ensure total satisfaction of your REAL guests, thus increasing your earning potential. It's simple logic, really - as is the logic behind tipping. Nice try though.

That would be a perfect world, moron. Get off the drugs.

"That would be a perfect world, moron. Get off the drugs."
Actually, that's not a "perfect world". That's what actually happens. A perfect world would be one where everyone is a gracious and appropriate tipper. (Or where poor tippers are systematically refused service.)

why does the percentage of how much you tip keep going up, if inflation goes up the money you actually pay will automatically be higher I don't understand how it's gone form 10% to 15% to 20% now.
Salidin217 2 years ago
Your etymology is a backronym.
pml08usaf 2 years ago
As a veteran of the restaurant industry for 14 years, an average tip is considered 20%. No server should come up to your table expecting your life servings to be handed over to them. On the other hand people should realize that most servers work very hard to earn a living. If your server is attentive and polite you should never leave less than 20%.
Surfer041 2 years ago
@Surfer041 And if you're a true American who believes in individual rights, you have no right to tell other people how they should spend their hard-earned money.
MelkorHimself 1 year ago
@MelkorHimself Yes that is true I have no right to tell people how to spend their money. All I'm saying is I believe 20% is a fair tip.
Surfer041 1 year ago
@Surfer041 Then my next question to you is this: How does a percentage of your bill in any way reflect the level of service? If, for example, you eat at TGI Fridays and order baby back ribs, 20% of that would be higher than if you ordered a burger. However, it takes the server the same amount of effort to bring it to you and attend to what you need. Therefore, the difference in tip should be zero.
MelkorHimself 1 year ago
@MelkorHimself I believe a tip should be based on two things. 1. The amount of the check, and 2. The quality of the service. If your bill is 40 and the server was above average, bump the tip up to ten. If your bill is 60 and the server was below average (slow, unattentive) bump it down to 8 or 9. Being in the buisness I know how hard some servers work and knowing they only get 2.13 an hour (which wont be changing) I think they should be rewarded for doing a good job.
Surfer041 1 year ago
@Surfer041 But the fact remains that X% of your bill has nothing to do with the level of service. If a family of five goes to a regular restaurant and leaves $10 on a $50 bill and then goes to a fancy restaurant for Christmas and leaves $50 on a $250 bill, but the level of service was the same, why should the server at the regular restaurant make so much less than the server at the fancier restaurant? If the level of service was the same, then the tip must be the same.
MelkorHimself 1 year ago 2
@MelkorHimself We can go back and forth on this issue all day. I will always believe that 20% of the bill is not too much to ask for a tip. If you are at a high end establishment, chances are that server will be working much harder and making more trips that say at Fridays or Applebees. Bottom line if you leave 20% you will be appreciated and asked to return. We remember the good tippers and never forget the bad ones.

To Insure Promptness...learned something new
Candyman757 2 years ago
Actually the phrase "INSURE' is because people used to leave tips BEFORE they got their food. Imagine if it were still that way today...You could serve people according to what you KNOW they are going to tip...not according to what they may or may not tip
john422401 2 years ago
Its understandable coz they came from poor country where 1 us dollars equals to a kingdom! But despite all that reasons tipping is about appreciating people!! Btw 10% white who dont tip are mostly White Trashhhhh
zhao4long2 2 years ago
Well white 90% are good tippers! Mexican and black never tip!! Hmmm only 1 out of a a thousand, Philipino are the worst 1 out of a million hahaha
zhao4long2 2 years ago
Actually, Ive found that it depends on where you work...Mexican and Black people tip me far better in the area I am in now. Same restaurant...different location. Almost all guests tip well. It's really about WHERE you work...Not to say that I don't get my share of bad tippers...sometimes they wander over to our neck of the woods.
john422401 2 years ago
it should be normal when people dont tip and good when people do tip, unfortunately you have got to a state when it is normal when people do tip and bad when they dont. Trying to pass it off as customary is nonsense as i know many americans who know its 'expected' nature has gone too far.
trigga1uk 2 years ago
"it SHOULD be normal when people don't tip and good when people do tip"
Well, I'm sorry that you don't like it...That's just the way it is here. I'm sure your servers in the UK make far more than our servers do. And in a lot of cultures, tipping is added to the bill or it is not expected or customary...But here it is customary, so just get with the program already!
john422401 2 years ago
There is essentially no tipping in the usa, its basically a tax that has been disguised as almost something someone is doing voluntarily - when lets face it, americans are well known for not their image in the eyes of other people. Just add the value of the tip to the product and stop trying to f**king pretend you are all nice generous people.
trigga1uk 2 years ago
Contrary to what you may think, not all Americans are pricks. Don't get me wrong, I am a prick, but I am not all Americans. So why don't you simmer down and chill the fuck out. Thanks for watching!
3BallJosh 2 years ago 4
@3BallJosh contrary to what you said, tipping was started in 17th century England by tavern patrons. they would give the server extra money so the server could by themselves food and drinks at the tavern as well. This was long before acronyms were even used. Also, you saying "don't fuck with the people who handle your food" really just makes you look like a jackass and makes people less likely to listen to what you say. That last part was intended as constructive criticism, not an insult.
hrtuvchrome 1 year ago
@hrtuvchrome thanks for the info. I did not know that. As for the not fucking with the people who handle your food thing goes, I know it may make me sound like a jackass, but it amazes me how people will be such assholes to the people who feed them. While I can honestly say I have never spit in anyone's food (or anything else for that matter) there is a lot of people who do. I just wanted to serve a warning to the people. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.
3BallJosh 1 year ago
You are right...we are not nice and generous people...we are paid to be that way..Now taxes....you have to pay them...tips you don't have to pay...so basically they are not a tax..they are customary...but if you think that it's okay to just shit on someone's customs...then go right ahead...We are glad to have your foreign ass.
john422401 2 years ago
so someone who dosent tip is instantly a prick and someone who does tip suddenly becomes an outstanding person? interesting way of catergorising people.
trigga1uk 2 years ago
People who reward good works are considered good people here...People who shit on their servants are considered bad people...go figure.
john422401 2 years ago
yes, and thats the way it should be. "Oh the waitress was rude, abusive, dropped our food, im only going to tip her 10%" - a tip shouldnt even be contemplated at that point.
trigga1uk 2 years ago 10
I don't care if someone doesn't tip because the server was rude, or just plain lazy. That circumstance doesn't deserve a tip. I agree with you 100%. Who wants to pay for bad service? But to say that it's not necessary because well, it's optional so no matter what the server does to please me, I'm still only leaving 10% because it's not part of OUR culture...Well, that's more than inconsiderate and rude.
john422401 2 years ago
the problem is, you are supplementing your income by relying on tips. Thats not right at all. Tips should be the added perk on top of it not form the basis of your wage. I question many things in many cultures that i deem detrimental that from an insiders view they might not see. Add the value of the tip (20%) to the product and end tipping - problem solved.
trigga1uk 2 years ago
Totally 100% agree with you there...They should be automatically added so that the basis of the wage is not so shaky...Servers wouldn't be so rude about it if they were getting paid a decent wage. Then if someone left extra it would be a perk and if not...well, that wouldn't be so bothersome.
john422401 2 years ago
Question: if the tip is added for the 8 or more, does management not give you that tip? Another thing: yes I saw the movie, you know the one. Now what do we do when the waiter/waitress comes up to the table, chewing and snapping gum, and goes, "whaddaya want?" Now my first reaction is maybe to leave, but say I'm in a hurry for a burger. I have a saying: "No servee, no tipee" which means I expect to be acknowledged as existing, Trying to get past the "I don't see you" thing. It works both ways.

its USA fucknut get use to OUR customs if not get out and go back home
ecfontana 2 years ago
No, Because servers are paid nothing after taxes. We have to be taxed for the food you guests all eat.
we dont even see our hourly wages. It is expected, if you want to pay the sticker price, you need to go to a buffet or fast food restaraunt.
We wait tables to support ourselves, most of us are in college with out financial aid, and driving cars that are falling apart and paying rent, and cant even afford to eat at the restaraunt we work at, even with the discount we have.
smirple124 2 years ago
What do the servers make per hour? If they're highly paid, then maybe no tip is needed. Did you hear the guy? $2.13/hr is SHIT PAY. $10.00/hr is shit pay, so the system HERE assumes tips will be paid. How IS the service there anyway?
soco13466 2 years ago
The comment i just made referred to the guy in Denmark, where they don't tip.
soco13466 2 years ago
Well they make standard money like everyone else, so as I said they only get tips from very rich or thankfull customers who really enjoyed the food or/and service. But yeah I understand how it works in USA now.

if you can afford to go out to eat at a restaraunt and expect excellent service...

then you can afford to tip your server...

Most of the world works on the theory that if a restaurant cannot pay it's staff a fair wage then it is not viable just like any other business why should employees have work for tips? another word for that is SLAVERY.
Stop tipping make owners pay their staff a fair wage for their work
bcmalloy 2 years ago 5
The flaw in that logic is that the mere act of not tipping is going to do nothing more than piss off your server. If you want to truly protest the unfair wages, you should stop going to restaurants all together. That way you take money from the restaurant, not just the server
3BallJosh 2 years ago
Your right they would be pissed but the fact customers have to tip is really part larger social
problem that is restaurant staff being underpaid.
If everyone stopped tipping employers would have to pay their staff properly or loose them...
I guess I'm biased my bros a chef and I pretty much can make anything I could buy in a restaurant faster and cheaper ;)

@3BallJosh
the flaw in that reasoning though is that if the customer actually gave a shit about you to begin with they would tip no problem, no questions asked. Someone who actually has no problem tipping will tip you, the guy that is a cheap bastard isn't suddenly going to boycott restaurants for your cause in regards to the issue of unfair wage regulations.
rico305305 1 year ago
Not tipping only hurts the server, not the restaurant. You obviously grew up with cheap parents, so therefor you are cheap. try waiting tables for 6 months. Then come back and run your mouth.

Just pushing for fair pay for restaurant staff, you seem to be unable to see the culture of tipping is the problem not those that don't tip.
You need to be blaming your boss to pay you properly not some guy who comes into your business to buy a sandwich.

@bcmalloy I'm never tipping again, you're welcome servers!
deathfalk 1 year ago
I think the warning at the end was just that---a warning to morons. I've had the misfortune of serving plenty of jerks, and I've never done anything to anyone's food, but I've certainly seen it done by other servers. I think we all have at some time. I think Josh is just being kind and warning mean people who are too stupid to figure that out.
And yeah, "if you don't like it, get another job" is a lousy thing to say. Most servers are serving because they ARE working towards a better job.
Booofrthefirst 2 years ago 3
75% of diners are idiots. They complain that tipping is an option and they shouldn't have to and that our employers (the restaurant) should pay us more. That's fine they want to go that route. Let my restaurant pay me more and you 10 dollar dish will now cost you 20 dollars enjoy.

@grrngirl Tipping is optional. Gratuity is meant for those who give exceptional service. Yes, if employers pay their employees higher wages, the food prices will increase. That's why I just try to avoid eating at sit-down restaurants altogether.

luno44 2 years ago 3
I'm not saying I expect to tip twice. All I'm saying is if the server puts forth more than average effort, especially if you continue to make ridiculous requests (or make him/her refill your drink 20 times because you constantly chug the shit) then a little extra would be appreciated. As for a different job, I got one. I'm now doing tech support, because i got sick of cheap fucks such as yourself. thanks for watching
3BallJosh 2 years ago
no, but where 18% grats do no exist, $5 on a $30 would be below average. I would say never go less than 10% because servers are taxed on their net sales... if you go lower than 10%, don't expect good or even any service next time that you come in.
V0ic30fReas0n 2 years ago 2

Sad but true...
isolabella88 3 years ago 3
"Above and beyond" - Wow! Purple Hearts for you all.
I think most of your issues are with your employers screwing you, not customers not tipping. Put the service charge in the price of the food and everyone is happy right? Oh, not the restaurant owners 'cos then they'd have to pay all the taxes and wages...
BTW, if I was your employer and I saw this video you would be looking for a new job tomorrow.

Thank you.

Im a black guy who waits tables and i gotta say man if it wasnt 4 white people i would be broke.black peps are posers always have and always will be.its a shame i must depend on another race to put me through school man.you take your bill total and times that by 15 percent.we will work on 20percent later as you people cant tip 15.
valtheguy 3 years ago 2
Yeah, I've seen black coworkers cussing out the hostesses for sitting them with black people. It really IS sad. If you ever get the chance to get a table of Japanese business men. Jump on it. Every time I waited on a group of Japanese guys, they drank like a mofo and tip like crazy.
3BallJosh 3 years ago
I used to drive a cab. Blacks don't tip as a rule, at least in Michigan, where they're entitled to take advantage of whitey, who after all, done them wrong. and arrogant? don't get me started.

my sister started as a server for like 4.25 an hour...
purplepixi18 3 years ago
i live in canada and even though servers do get tips at restaurants they get alot more than 2.13/hr......its minimum wage which can range from 8-10 bucks and hour depending on the province........2.13 is so low!
rico305305 3 years ago
No wonder so many restaurants go out of business, but there is a burger king or mcdonalds on every block.
shrededward 3 years ago
When I was a server, I was actually pretty decent at my job. But now that I have a "real job" I don't give a shit where you or anyone else for that matter eats.
3BallJosh 3 years ago
why should the server care so much for their employer dumbass?!?
at 2.13/hr it sounds like the employer should be doing alot more caring about his employees!
rico305305 3 years ago
Here are a few of my tips. 1. We dont care how much you get paid. Sorry but I have enough things to worry about as it is. 2. Everybody runs their ass off if they have a job. And many of us dont get tipped. Amazing concept but yeah, other people work too. 3. "Never fuck with people who handle your food". Yes, I agree. food handlers like you are NOT professionals so you will stoop to things like spitting or sneezing or shitting in food you serve to people.
shrededward 3 years ago
1. the $2.13 per hour is to cover the tax on our tips, so we are essentially working for just the tips.
3BallJosh 3 years ago
shrededward you fuckin moron! lets not overdramatize and look down on servers........these are down people putting themselves through college for the most part! and if someone actually had their food shitted on than i say they must have done something hella fucked up to deserve that!
rico305305 3 years ago
And that is because most people live in the real world.
shrededward 3 years ago
no actually you are the one that doesn't get it you cheap jew! seriously shrededward don't be so fuckn ignorant .....i really do hope you get hit by a fkn bus on your way to the "real world" tomorrow!
fckn idiot

15% tip was good in the 60's when the waiter/waitress was the server, busser, and in some cases bartender. Tipout was far less. IT'S 2008 PEOPLE, tipout is higher and usually taken out on sales. 20% is the new minimum, period.
chadree3 4 years ago 2
amen!
3BallJosh 4 years ago
Fuck that !! If I want to tip 15%, then I'll tip 15% You all really have some nerve making YouTube videos demanding that people tip you 20%. Keep in mind that we as customers DON'T HAVE TO TIP YOU SHIT. Instead of being arrogant enough to be mad at what someone leaves for a tip, maybe you should be glad that people tip at all.

Here's a for all the people who complain about not getting good tips, go obtain a college degree, and then seek a career in corporate america.
nikkipooh2008 4 years ago
many people wait tables while trying to obtain a college degree. Especially since it's a job with flexible hours so that you can work around your schedule. My thing is that if you can't afford a $15 tip, you can't afford the $100 meal.
3BallJosh 4 years ago
yah don't be so ignorant nikkipooh2008, serving large in part is a young persons job, young people who are working p/t along with going to school f/t. it is a means to and end! doing what we have to do! so do what you are supposed to do when going out and tip you cheap bastard!!!
rico305305 4 years ago
nicely put
3BallJosh 4 years ago
Sure, we'll all do that. But who's gonna wait on your lazy butt? It's a service that you're using. Pay for that service or order take out.

Once that's done it doesn't matter if there are a few mistakes here in there, the person likes they waiter, they had an overall pleasant experience, the'll most likely tip well and come back.
lordjohn67 4 years ago 2
exactly...but there are some assholes who think "oh my goodness, the food was awesome, you were great, blah blah blah" and give a buck and some change on a $40...it's happened to me many times
3BallJosh 4 years ago
I think it also depends where you work. I get a lot of tourists at my place, and sometimes they'll leave 2 dollars on a 50 dollar check, for example, since there is no tipping in their countries. Some days half the business is tourists who won't tip. They don't even expect you to be nice and charming. But overall I usually leave the place with a minimum of 15%, because of the tables that do tip.
lordjohn67 4 years ago
If bad tables are not the exception rather than the rule where you work, maybe you can find a place that attracts better demographics. I don't think America's tipping trends are going to change any time soon...
lordjohn67 4 years ago
But this sense of entitlement is bullshit. I am a waiter myself and have worked with waiters who expect minimum 15% for doing very little. I wouldn't tip a server who (example) talks to his/her buddies and doesn't make a trip once my whole meal except to give me the check when I haven't asked for it with a big fake smiling "THANK YOU"
lordjohn67 4 years ago
As for the "Above and beyond the call of duty" thing, I don't go in a restaurant with a notepad and take points off here and there. If the waiter is pleasant (no juggling or magic tricks required), my meal is served hot, the waiter is there when I need him/her, etc, then yes I give 20% or more.
lordjohn67 4 years ago
There shouldn't be a MINIMUM tip. As a customer it's my right to get my meal the way I ordered it in a timely fashion with clean silverware and refills: That's BASIC. It's included in the price of the meal.
lordjohn67 4 years ago
You also have the right to be an A-Hole
tom319 4 years ago
extra work for running they are in the customer service industry that means satisfy the customer no matter how difficult they are... but at the same time i do tip 20-30% if you deserve it ... i will have to admit though i had a waitress that was so bad i gave her tip to the manager that night...
majician22 4 years ago
Of course, even I as a server have not tipped due to exceptionally shitty service
3BallJosh 4 years ago
P.S. How about when 4-6 people go to dinner together? At the end of the night everyone throws some cash in the middle and skates!......Those are times the tip can be virtually non-existant too...and the last diner to pay, pays the most!@
Letmymonkeygo 4 years ago
Letmymonkeygo 4 years ago
Thanks for the heads up on your video! I was hoping to get some perspectives from servers as well.
Brianj1234 4 years ago
Hey! Good points. I wish I'd seen this before I posted mine. I couldn't find anything on this subject! I totally agree with you. :)
nietzcheisdead 4 years ago
Josh, this was a very informative video which I enjoyed. I did NOT know servers are only paid $2.13 an hour and basically lived off tips. That blows. Especially for idiots that don't do a good job.
Now, from a customer's view: I've always been a fantastic tipper (20-25% of the bill) *IF* I get great service. If I don't, then they will get 10%.
silverscreamgrl 4 years ago
What I consider great service: Not ever having to ask for anything. If my water glass is always topped off (a task in itself), or I never have to ask for ketchup when I order a burger, that automatically constitutes 20%. If the server is charming (polite, funny, etc), they get 25%. If they're a dipshit that can't get an order right, don't come around and refill drinks, and never ask how the meal is? 10%.
silverscreamgrl 4 years ago
As for auto gratuities: if 15% is added to the bill and it's just standard service (see the dipshit comment), then they get just that 15% and I feel I paid my share of a tip. If, however, they are the star that deserves a 25% tip, I will add in that extra 10% because they deserve it.
I don't feel I'm overly demanding when I'm at a restaurant and would never fuck with a waiter (I DO know they are handling my food).
silverscreamgrl 4 years ago
All I want is what I pay for: a relaxing evening of not having to cook a meal, and my water topped off. Oh, and ketchup with my damned burger, yo!
silverscreamgrl 4 years ago
since 15% is the standard, I work for 20%. even if i'm having a crappy day, I am still friendly. I'll make jokes (I wouldn't order the tuna sallad sandwich...cause we don't have that here)and I'm quick to refill glasses. It's usually me who asks if you need a refill instead of you asking me to refill it.
3BallJosh 4 years ago
I'd want you to be my server then, because the joke would have cracked me up. And you'd get the 25% ;) Because I'm easy like that haha
