Pardon me for asking, but if Olympic medals are bunk, why bother competing for them? Michelle Kwan certainly didn't go to Torino for the pasta; she wanted a gold medal, man! She wanted it so badly, she was literally ready to bust a gut to get it!

In 2006 she stepped away from skating to take care of a very serious hip injury. She had surgery and while recovering, earned her degree from Denver University. She became an American Public Envoy and has traveled the world with the state department, she seriously contemplated a return to competitive skating, but decided to go to grad school instead. She performed for the first time since 2006 this past August...and it was magical.
