  • Does tölting on ice not seem like it could be a bad idea...? O.o

  • excuse me but this video is crap because it is so shooooort !

    this horse is just wonderful

  • Gorgeous! I call these horses "buglegs." The tölt is kind of like dancing the twist! My French spouse I taught to ride adored these horses but liked them best at full gallop! There is no way these horses should be able to do this on such harsh terrain, but they go and go. It's just normal for them and with basic care and attention they are fine. They are much appreciated in Germany, too. They sure are hard to catch, however!

  • my dad is from iceland and we come to iceland offen. and i love comeing out in the wild in iceland. its so beautiful. i live in denmark

  • The music is so perfect!! What beautiful animals!

  • I'm a horserider from the uk, how do you teach them to do that? do these paces come naturally, or does it take a lot of training?

  • @HanoverianHorse Some have it naturally, some needs a bit of a practice before :) But every icelandic usually have it. (If you mean tölt)

  • @Ravenbite Thanks

  • I've ridden a young grey Icelandic mare for several years now and she had an extremly comfortable tölt. She preffered the tölt for the trot, so everytime we were on a trail ride and the other horses were trotting she tölted.^^ But then they sold the white fuzzball....

  • why on earth would you do that on ice?

  • @equijess101

The horses are used to that. Just like a arabian belongs in the dessert. Those horses belong in Iceland!!

  • @equijess101 the breed developed in Iceland are are extremely sure-footed. They are usually allowed to run free over the hummocks until they are 3-4 years old, during this time they fully develop their physical abilities and coordination.

  • How do you ask these ponies for a told, is it just holding them back from a canter because there always seems to be a strong contact with the reins. thanks, intrigued!!

  • @artyjax

You put all your weight as much as you can leaning back in the saddle and your feet more forward so to speak, almost like you are falling backward, but not too heavily though ; ) I also think it's nice to give the horse a sign by moving your ring fingers quickly back and forward, while holding the rein..... Then his mane comes up higher.

  • Imagine a Viking comin at ya ridin one of those great horses. Run away run away!

  • Hehe they are so fluffy from their winter coats. :)

  • Wow, They are just amazing, stupid question but is it hard to sit to?, you all look so natural,

  • I have ridden these great horses in Iceland. Bravo.

  • they run weird xD

  • I'm sorry but how could ANYONE dislike this video ;D x

  • Wow, tolle Pferde! Muss echt wahnsinnig Spaß machen zu tölten...Mein Isländer damals konnte nur Pass gehen

  • @swiesele If your Isländer can pace, vast odds are that it can tölt.

I'll venture to say that if you get him/her to a decent trainer and spend a couple of months softening him/her muscles up by doing a lot of curvy exercises and help him relax, he'll be as good a tölter as the next isländer.

Of course, you could be right in assuming it can't tölt, but since it can pace, it's actually pretty unlikely.

Hope this brought you some hope. :)

  • i watch this video at least 3 times a day lol i live in nz tryna find a breeder here for these lovely horses i have quick ambler but no where near as quick as this AAAA++++

  • icelandic horses are so coool, I love 'em <3

  • Comment removed

  • I think that is very comfortable for rider.

  • @aaddkkaa Incredibly comfortable....! and undescribable. You should try it ;)

  • Do they do thay gait naturally

  • @jenkay17 Most of them, it's rare that icelandic can't tölt, but flying pace isn't so easy always. My icelandic has five gaits, meaning he's tölting and can do pace too, but I've rode also icelandics who can only tölt -and for once, I rode an icealndic who couldn't do even that! :) It's kinda funny.

  • @jenkay17 Yes:)

  • Let me think... ice+trotting horse... of course nothing can go wrong!

  • 1:41 -- wow!

  • That reminds me of when I was just a beginner and on an icelandic horse riding camp... I was trying to make the horse I was riding canter from pace (she lacks regular trot) but she just sped up into flying pace and I ended up losing the stirrups and my balance. I hugged the horse with both my arms and legs and managed to hang on her side like some indian, and even managed to stop her and climb back up without falling! That was scary. And fun. The horse was lovely. :D

  • aww the babys cute

  • my retirement horse will be an icelandic.. especially if i still live in new england!!! love em'!

  • Lovely - just lovely - we have 3 icelandics - (2 are 5 gaited & 1 -is 4 gaited) and when they are in tolt it is indeed just like riding a moving couch lol - great if you have a bad back *does* Loved the song too - thankyou for posting this

  • Nice horse but just et me ask why would you have a little kid on a horse we used to have that kind of horse but we switched to quarter horses andlet me tell you falling off of that kind of horse while it is doing that you tend to get stepped on and that little boy or girl would have been crushed .

  • why do you think so , i have been riding icelandics horses for a long time and i have 1 fall off and that was like 2 years ago but he didnt step on me , he stopt !

  • @katrin0210 Let me guess he stopped and looked at you. Like what are you doing there, i'm cute. :) :P

  • @daddysgurl586 well then good they dident fell.

  • I love it! Cool deal!

For those of you who've been asking about the song, the name of the band is Big Pig & the song is Breakaway.

  • tha trot is pretty fast.. and for how fast tha legs are moving it wouldnt actually be that bumpy i dont think....

  • @kassi890

it isn't trot .. it was tölt :) and pace of course : D and yeah, tölt is not as bumpy as trot is cos it moves you left and right , not up and down like at the trot .. just something i know - i ride icelandics : D the best horses to me < 3

  • thts what i meant lol........ i have a standard bred.... and he paces ... .. lol i always just class it as a trot cuz im used to it lol....

  • That's a trot to talk about at 0:30! The music fits well indeed.

  • looks like a fun ride! :)

  • Love this video! Good combination with the music! Whats the name of the song?

  • thats really cool

  • wow, that looks fun. I think i'd bounce off though XD

  • I love icelandic horses! i own 2.. and tölt is sooo amazing!

    ps. nice video

  • I have also an iclenadic horse.. ;p

  • that is tolting its not a special thing or anything its normal

  • No that was Pacing. That is the 5 and fastest gait of the Icelandic horse. And its not normal at ALL. Just cos a horse is an icelandic purebred or not does not mean they are 5-gaited. My icelandic is 22 and she hardly ever paces so they wouldnt consider her 5-gaited. The tolt is common in a icelandic horse, most choose it over a trot so I would agree just cos I spend most of my time around icelandics but a pace is really special. Pacing signafies you horse is giving its all for you.

  • AWSOME ^^ love this vid :)

  • I hope that I can have the opportunity to ride one of these awesome horses someday. They are a very pure and untainted breed as I understand.

  • Guys who dont know ANYTHING should just shut up. Icelandic horses are the best ever. I own 3, so I know

  • excuse me but they are the most gorgeous horses that i have seen! you, my friend, are unnatural and grotesque! not these magnificent animals!

  • I call it "buglegs." Riding in Iceland from the North of the country to the South in 2001 was an outstanding experience. They're great horses and can move easily where I'd break my ankles just trying to take a few steps.

  • they move like my shadrack horse.

  • is that gait smooth?

  • Tolt or flying pace? Tolt is very smooth for there's always minimum one foot on the ground perfect tolt is almost without vibration - like sitting on a moving sofa. Flying pace may be a bit too much for "normal" riders.

  • ooh "normal" riders? are you saying that u r an expert on riding and everything horse related? i find you offensive

  • what do u mean by normal???

  • Gash,ilove them,i actually want 1.stunning

  • dang! how do they not slip, is it the gait? Would you say they are good long-distance trail mounts?

  • They are perfect for long distance trails...

  • do they ever over reach? like seems like they would alot but then again they seem very sure footed. truely majestic :D love it

  • cute but its funny how it runs

  • sooo Beautifule horses !

  • Those are beautiful horses!

  • beautyfull!!

  • Hammer Video, das ist tölten!!

  • Great looking racking pony. Looks so natural :)

  • Its considered as a horse, not a pony. And "racking" or tølt is all natural to them :)

  • wow beautiful horse

  • Come to see ICE Tölt in Velden-Austria in February 2009!!!

  • 0:40 = Flying pace

    0:52 = Tölt

  • I was reading some other video comments and people have said that riding them in these gaits hurts them. Is this true? Sorry, just wanted to know the truth!

  • it doesn't they are born with this gaites we just ride them like trot or galop or walk

  • @lilredem no it doesn't hurt them, this is a natural gate and some icelandic horses choose these gates them selves. But if you ride this gate on to hard ground for a long time it can hurt them

  • Can anybody tell me the name of this song? A friend like it very much.

  • The song is Australian (Big pig) title Breakaway. Thanks

  • All I know is that its the song at the beginning of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (LOL)

  • yeah i never saw a difference from the rack and tolt........

  • I love icelandtics

  • THats Cool

  • Thats to Cool

  • For navyma21: Of course they ride on the ice, because in Iceland is much ice, and if they don't ride on the ice, they don't have much space to ride. So tell me, where they then ride?? Sorry, if I may sound rude, but I think that you are wrong...

For speedracker: That was a very nice video, it's one of my favourites!! :)

  • reply to spanielheart --

Yes, you can talk something for true, but still your not right at every rate =)

--Iceland only has snow at winter, but iceland does have many glacers

Tölt can be ridden on ice and dry

I don't believe that they are riding horses in glacers, so i'm pretty sure that this is at winter =)

I'm sure of this because i'm icelandic myself

  • guys i can explain i live in iceland its called ís tölt its once a year you tölt on the ice near lagafljóti i watch evry year so just mail me for more answers about the icelandic HORSE

  • Why is this painful for the horse? They have "spikes" under their shoes so they won´t slip! This is something that the Icelanders have done for a long time! Do you think people who ride in the winter is abusing the horses? In the nordic region we have ice on the ground in the winter and we have been riding our horses for centuries anyway..No problem at all!

  • What, you are saying flugskeið is what Americans call rack? Flugskeið is exactly what it says, a flying pace. It's a near two-beat lateral gait with suspension. How is that any different from what you call pace?

  • why do they Tölt them on ice?

  • Duh, it's Iceland,. a frozen tundra. For cryin out loud, these are Icelandics in iceland, can you not put two and two together oh ignorant American!

  • I guess i have more compassion for my horses, than running them on something that could hurt them. Obviously you have a stick up your ass.

  • Those are ICElandic horses, you know? Do you have any idea what iceland looks like? I guess not.

Sorry if I may sound rude, but I hate it if people have no idea of what they're talking about! I guess you've never seen an icelandic horse in its home country walking around on its own. It's may be not exactlly 'normal' that they tölt on ice, but it's not a big deal for them.

  • It does not harm any healthy horse in any way to run on ice - as long as it is properly shoed with studded shoes.

Checking out the facts before barking COULD be a good idea, but, ofc, feel free to live in ignorance if that pleases you!

  • @speedracker Iceland is not a frozen tundra! The icelandic riders ride the horses in competitions on frozen lakes over the wintertime because the movements of the horse gets more dramatic, more leg action and such. But I doubt that this is good for the horses... The winter in Iceland are quite mild and in the summer it gets quite hot with sun all day and night! Iceland is a WRONG name for Iceland...

  • Comment removed

  • @TheCruelActor Well, I'm Icelandic and I'm born here. The summer in Iceland are just as warm as in Denmark and around Europe. It was very hot last summer, very sunny and warm :) 20 degress in Iceland are like 30 degress elsewhere because the climate here is different, there is no moisture in the air so being under the sun is like being straight under a burnin lamp. The winters in Europe are much colder than in Iceland because of the moisture they have in the air. ;)

  • @hestur01 this summer when i was for three weeks in iceland, i wasn told that i was so lucky with the weather and that the weather before and afterwards was realy bad, so im sorry if i am wrong, but i oly concluded out of the things i was told and i saw

  • @hestur01 How big is the sport there or just riding as a hobby? And how common is it that people ride some even if they are not that into it? I guess you have alot more men there riding than us in Sweden. Here very few men rides wich is a little boring.

  • @speedracker Can you not tell that like not even 30% of Iceland is covered in Ice?

that 70% is covered in land? Stupid ignorant Australian.

  • @randomenvelope There is regular icetölt competitions on iceland every year, Why I am not sure. Perhaps lakes is just one of the best places in the wintertime to find a big flat area. Deep snow hardly help breaking any speed reckords.

  • @Pohjanpoika13 most other bigger countries like canada get way thicker snow then iceland have ever had latelly, we think its crazy if it reaches our knees but people out there have it over their heads

  • @speedracker wow ....fail

  • @navyma21 Because then the horses gets more action :) and is more high stepping :)

  • Comment removed

  • correctly it's the Tölt - without the umlaut is incorrect and can be offensively used.

  • These are the most amazing horses i've ever seen! It's crazy! I dont know how many people have ever actually ridden one but they are sooooooooooooooo smooth!

  • WOWvery nice video!

  • Nice video and lots of nice Horses!

  • btw what's the name of that song .. it's attractive

  • The song is Australian (Big pig) title Breakaway. Thanks

  • ..cool,eh?! :)

  • They are not ponies, they are horses :) They have the conformation of a horse.

  • omg thats such a cute gait for such a small pony... i suppose they have to have fast strides to stop them sinking into the snow... :)

  • @10salisburye How can you call say "such a small pony"? (even if this aint no pony) Their height are pony size but not especilly small and some grow over the pony limit. So I wonder what a normal pony or even a big pony looks like then.

  • i love riding them! :D they are sooo fast! :D haha <3 i looove them!

  • wow! those little ponies can go! they are my daughters favorite horse.

  • wow amazing little horses.I can't belive they ride them on frozen lake.
