Im probably going to have to pass on this acheivement. I don't have the insane amount of time it would take to master this, even after seeing how other people do it. I can get three out the elevator, but then it's seven by the time I get the last door open, and then I just can't do the rest in three steps.

Welp, I must have terrible luck because everytime Chell farts or sneezes it counts as a step. I don't know how you're doing it but every time she lands out a portal it's a step and it's a stupid.

Sure I could do each challenge with just 2 portals easy as pie, thought I was done? nooooo you have to also do them with least steps and time-trial.......damn it I already got my gold who cares bout the other stuff!......I want my achievements though >.> but I am not spending hours just to get least steps just not worth the time.

To those who lose patience with this on console, I just did this one. 2 steps out of the elevator is tricky, but listen to the footsteps and time your jump with the 2nd. Put your first portals as close to the 1st button and the elevator as you can. Landing doesn't count as a step if you have just come out of a floor-based portal and close it behind you. 2 steps from the elevator, one from landing on the 2nd button, 2 to jump from the 2nd to floor, 5 to exit (I couldn't get it in 4). On Xbox360

@CrazyJayBe Yes, landing counts as a step under normal conditions. It does not, however, count as a step if you come up through a floor-based portal and close it behind you.

So to be clear: Landing counts as a step. Using floor based portals and closing them behind you (Without any planar motion and limited vertical momentum) does not.

Which is why jumping to clear distance is not a common practice aside from entering/exiting the elevators.

Seems a little ridiculous that your steps count before you have even entered the level. I don't think the steps should start counting until you're out of the elevator and they should stop once you pass through that barrier.

@DrearierSpider Challenge modes in general are an unacceptable replacement for gameplay content. The only way to complete them is to spend a ludicrous amount of time learning intricate game mechanics and trying the same challenge over and over again umpteen times.

It should not be necessary to turn one video game into a career just to grab some achievements.

Also if you can get right in front of the "force field" near the elevator with 6 steps, save immediately! It's still a pain in the ass from there but if you crouch jump just right (works on consoles too for those of you wondering, did it on 360) you can make it into the elevator using only 4 steps (although it seems fucking impossible when you're doing it).

People who are having trouble with the 3 steps at the beginning:

The jump crouch move is your savior! It will give you the necessary height to make that jump in 2 steps.

Also if you can open the door with only 3 steps then save before going any further and when entering the elevator jump crouch inside! It will save you 2 steps.

It seems the hardest challenge for me is getting gold in least time. I really hate hurrying up in a game which requires brains. Good thing least steps is easier to pull of when least portals and advanced levels were finished.

I just wish they didn't have the whole step thing. Also I'm not the best at aiming. I want to get all of The Orange Box achievements but this is so hard.

well i think they are putting a portal on the floor, where they want to go, then putting one beneth them, and when they come out the other portal, shoot the same color portal they just came out of on the cieling. that works for me.

I was about to agree with you but I just managed the whole thing in 10 steps.. Good enough for me. More to the point I made it to the first switch in 2 steps... throw a yellow portal on the floor as close to the start as you can. throw a blue portal as far left as you can get. you CAN jump it in 2 steps .. once you start oscilating throw a BLUE portal at the ceiling and you will land without the counter going up.

Yeah, really...try harder. 1 step +jump=2 steps, if you jump right into a portal that's 2 coming out of the elevator.

One thing I have a hard time doing though, is not getting a step counted when stopping a portal loop. I always seem to get one upon landing, and when I don't, I have no idea what I did differently.
