@superdarkmario2 toe is mathy, but they're predominantly a post-rock band. Math has many different variations:

Experimental Math (such as Hella or Tera Melos)

Math Rock (such as Giraffes? Giraffes! or Six Gallery)

Mathcore (Such as The Dillinger Escape Plan or Converge)

That's just to name a few, there's so many variations don't shut out an entire genre section. There's something for everyone in math.

The thing is is that a lot of this fan base is in the oriental parts of the world which is why people would think this band is hipster I guess. This isn't a "hip" band, they're just not mainstream is all.

The most tasteful progressive work. I love how they use clean tones... in a way its kind of like listing to a band of chimes, especially in their song "1/21." In a genre that usually sounds aggressive and often dissonant, Toe is a soothing bright light.

They've got a unique style thats for sure... I keep waiting for the music to go somewhere but it doesn't. i just can't help but think the drummer overshadows the rest of the band. I'm sure their is an audiance for them but I guess I'm not one of them. "Do what you love and love what you do, be happy cause no one can do it for you!"

I find that for once the band doesn't overshadow the drums. To me Toe is in complete unison and it's the little details that moves the music. It's like a subtle dance that slowly but powerfully moves forwards. I can see why a lot of people don't like it, but I find them to be soothing to my mind. Lovely band.

He's probably jazz-trained. He does a lot of jazz-inflected fills. A lot of jazz drummers hold their sticks that high.

@DannyOceanify i have a couple friends that play jazz drums, and they say it makes it way easier to play fast, it just changes where the movement is. most drummers use their whole arms and swing the stick, playing that high gives a pivot point in the hand, makes it way quick.
