  • Watch for another video on knot tying by my father, Harold Morrow, coming soon.

  • @trivialguy1 I heard about his knot tying skills. Be sure to post it! I look forward to seeing it.

  • Actually interesting part starts at 4:50

  • Aside from preventing the fire from being blown around and spread to the prairie by the wind, I imagine the Lakota had other concerns too, for safety when traveling as part of a small hunting party a fire like this would be harder to see from a distance than an above ground fire, and because of limited fire making resources on the plains it appears to be a more efficient use of available materials.

  • great video with some good information . You couldn't make one where I live here in england because of the high peat content in the soil

    JOHN

  • Jesus... old man river ain't takin no shit ... ain't never been about that

never even heard of this before, great vid. thanks.

  • i hope this guy is still alive since hees made this video, because he looks like a great man :)

  • happy birthday!

  • I suspect the main use of this fire was to hide the location by not producing smoke that can be seen for miles around.

  • I guess I will have to go somewhere else to see one burn!

  • awesome video.

  • Thanks for this video. Great.

  • it is well, with his soul.

  • 90 y.o. man, using a post hole digger, that a 20 y.o. today would use if you paid him. He reminds me of Clint Eastwood in the movie Grand Torino. A very nice, old man, thats not to be messed with. We need more mentors like him for our young children. Gob Bless him.

  • is this Williston?

  • Thanks grandpa. Happy beat. Let's see some fish coming out of that river!

  • @MattGstuff:

Would you be in the mood to make another video of my father? He is very good at demonstrating knot tying--more that the usual half-dozen or so. I think that it would be very informative and entertaining. Just let me know, and I can arrange it with him.

  • @trivialguy1 I would, problem is I graduate from WIU this fall. However, shoot me your contact info and I will pass it on to my video production professor who can then assign a student to make a video for him..

  • this is 2009 is this fella still around? I hope I get to his age

  • woow my birth day is on thanks giving happy b day soon

  • Lot's to learn from old cats like this.. More people should listen!

  • Yeah, if you don't light it on fire, of course it will be smokeless.

  • When pulling bark of trees, DON'T PULL A LOT FROM ONE AREA.... take little strips from different trees. You will kill trees by pulling a bunch of bark from one spot. It opens up the tree to fungus, pests, bugs, larva, rot, and all kind of other shit.

Just think of it this way. Your skin is your protection from infection and other foreign objects. If you have little cuts all over your body, they will heal more quickly than if you have one giant wound, which could just kill you outright.

  • @staphinfection Question: Since when did this vid have anything about a health class and Secondly: GO HUG A TREE!!!!!

  • Great video ! Keep up the good work .

  • @ Trivialguy1. He is a real neat guy. I had a fun time working with him on this video and hearing his vast knowledge of scouting and the great outdoors. Wished my troop back when I was in the scouts had a scoutmaster like him..

And thanks everyone for your comments!

  • Please tell us this man's basic diet...there is something to this. I'm a big believer in food as medicine...I want to know more about this fascinating man, he is aging remarkably!

  • outstanding - thanks for posting! I bet when he was young he never thought he would be filmed one day so that people all over the world would be able to instantly learn what he had to teach!

  • This is my father, who will be 93 on the 28th of Nov. He's forgotten more about Scouting and the outdoors than most people will ever know. Troop 38 was the sharpest in the Prairie Council in central Illinois during the time he was the scoutmaster (1954-58). Even though very small, I was allowed to participate in almost all troop activities. He is an amazing man, in better physical shape than many people 20 years his junior. Those who critisize him for being 'slow' should remember his age.

  • @trivialguy1

That's a privilege to have someone like him in your family. Good video.

  • What a character. Reminds me of my grandpa.

  • @yahoopig

Hey ass hole hes 91.Stop acting like a bitch.Try doing this when you are 91.PEOPLE THESE DAYS!

  • i wanna be like u when im 90!

  • geezus christ couldnt you get a guy to just say my great great great great grandpa was taught how to do this by the dakota indians instead of actualy putting him in the video so it dosent take so long?

  • @bobwatters don't be mean on the old fucker

  • @yahoopig hey i like old people this guys just to damn slow lol. this video could have been done in like a min and a half and it took over 6 mins lol

  • @bobwatters you jerk

  • @youfreakfuck chill out dude you know it dont take 6 damn mins to teach someone to dig a damn hole!

  • DUDE this guy was in scouts when a real gun was apart of the uniform :P

  • 90 years old and can use youtube.....holy crap!!

  • experience and technique! good stuff, ill try that next time were out for camping. thank you!

  • Never, ever, discount an old person.I'd wager most 18 year olds would die in a survival situation while Mr.Marrow would be cooking meat he just trapped over a Dakota fire hole in front of his comfortable shelter. Imagine 80+ years of usable knowledge.

  • holy shit my grandad looks older than you and hes 60 :/

  • There's the guy. Somebody who knows how to load a Dakota. I learned from that generation of Scout Leaders. Best teachers I ever had.

I'm surprised that this pit isn't more common. Very few if any black coals left (wasted fuel). Slow burning so you get more time out of your wood. Warms the ground. You can almost sleep on top of it. Less forest fire risk. Snuffs out easily. Lower pollutants.

I think it would the best method for the modern Scout.

Keep a camera on Mr. Morrow and keep him talking

  • I love this guy. When I'm 90 I hope I'm out digging fire-holes and not sitting with a bunch of drooing old people in front of a blank t.v.

  • This guy is the man!

  • 90 two years ago

  • too know half the stuff this man has done in his life and seen would be a gift to any person on the face of this earth

  • Mr. Harold Morrow is 90 years-young!

  • I assuming you can make the fire pit part bigger right.

  • @mogges1 thats what i want to know so when i have fires behind my house they can burn more efficiently. i think as long as the vent hole is big enough it should work right?

  • is that tinder the stuff that makes the tree feel like really soft and squishy?

  • i honestly thought around 60-65 >< shiit duude

  • old guy with boy-scouts ... i wount make any assumptions. Only kidding, am sure he's a nice guy

  • Seriously, you look like you're in better shape than most 70 year olds...

  • The gift of knowledge.

  • i loved this video

  • The neat thing about this is you can burn green wood in it

  • great video

  • 91! You look like you're 70!

  • 

    Very informative thnx for sharing

  • Guy looks very good for a 90 year old.....COOL!!

  • thanks for sharing your knowledge. Never thought about shag bark in that way

  • Harold Morrow - National Treasure

  • Nice video, but where is the tunnel between the 2 holes?

  • @60odeeman reach down too the bottom of the empty hole and pluck thru to the other.

  • No fire?

  • Learn something new everyday... THANKS ^_^

  • Nice explanation of the Dakota Fire Hole. Thank you very much!

  • great video very detailed
