  • Awesome!

  • @elijaheac Thank you!

But this video is no longer relevant. The content is outdated and I have since moved on to a new 3D engine.

  • @DwarvesH Yeah, I've seen the other videos after this one. All of it is great.

  • I saw them after I posted that comment, though.

  • so is this an improvement on DF or a standalone?

  • @is194 It is 100% standalone.

  • @DwarvesH Amazing, so when will i be able to give you my money for this?

  • B) You are

    C) a moron: you're comparing a pre-alpha system that was solely designed to be a graphics engine with an alpha GAME after you pointed out that DF is still far from finished yet. Irony much?

    D) As I have, AGAIN, said, this is unlikely to go beyond isometric. A 3D engine would kill even the best gaming rig on the market with a full fort.

The only thing you missed was your own common sense. Thus you should take your own advice and "go away".

  • D) As for graphics crap, don't talk. There's a reason crysis is the first thing people test their new rig on. It is insane. Just download a pack, and be amazed when your graphic complaint dissolves into "DF

Y U NO SPOON FEED ME THIS GAME?!?!".

Now. Did i miss anything? No? Good. Go away trolls.

  • @TheBreadbocks sounds to me like you're the troll. he's making the game 3d, which enhances gameplay imo

  • B) Honestly? Ima laugh if this even has half of the features that DF does now when it ends. It just won't stand up.

    C) To the trolls/dev: Don't give BS about how unpolished DF is or about how incomplete DF is etc. Last I checked, DF isn't even a third of the way to beta. Instead, tiny unpolished systems are put in until Tarn can come back around and do them up right, like the Temperature system.

  • @TheBreadbocks

    Shut. The. Fuck. Up. FAGGOT.

  • @omegapoint777 Wow... That was insightful....

Idiocy aside, TheBreadbocks is right, in part, correct, leaving ass-side his raging butthurt. On his own point system, I'd like to draw to his attention that:

    A) As I have pointed out, content is extremely similar for this to be released as stand-alone without worry of lawsuit. Hence the DwarvesH dev should talk to Toady about adding an isometric engine into the game at some later date. This isn't about "winning" but helping improve a game. Sheesh.

  • @DaRedWunsGoFasta

Unless he actually steals the code toady uses, there's absolutely no grounds for a lawsuit based on copyright infringement. Simply using a very similar concept can't be, or there'd be no innovation allowed at all. By that line of reasoning, toady could be sued by the owners of NetHack.

As for getting toady to implement anything, well good luck with that :/

  • This whole thing has reached MAXIMUM TROLLING LOLOLOL.

    A) This will never get off the ground. Either you hit the roadblock CPU right around the time you add 30+ creatures. If that doesn't happen, and Bay12 themselves doesn't sue you for intellectual property infringement (Seriously. Plump Helmets? No way in hell you could have "happened" upon that name.) then Bay12 forums will. If they don't the legions of other DF players who aren't elitist enough to fit in will sue. You can't win.

  • Wow, a dwarf fortress graphical frontend. Looks neat.

  • Sorry if I jumped to conclusions. You could've simply datamined the hell out of the game or just used the raw files and mechanics for all I know, and that's infringement. The fact that the embark menu, items and so one were extremely similar was misleading, and still iffy ground. I was nagging about the risk of getting the project shut down with a cease-and-desist or something. An isometric engine would get a bigger crowd playing DF if Toady would have you add it in, hence talk to him.

  • Thanks a lot, I really couldn't play DF because of (the absence of) the graphics

  • YouTube won't let me post a direct link to the thread. It is on bay12forums. In the general discussion group, a thread called "Dwarf Fortress Clone?". If you just want to bash without reading anything from the blog or other information out there based on a few short videos fell free to do so. If you want to check out more go to the forum for a civilized (by Internet standards) discussion about the topic. And the link to the development blog is in the in the description.

  • There are 3 elements when coding something like this: engine, mechanics and content. I am coding the engine right now, and even if you don't agree with this, but using existing item lists that have been proven to work are the best way to test the engine. I have no intention to release with his content. It is hard to summarize 32 pages of development blog posts and a 18 page thread about the subject of originality, which you can find on the Bay12Games forums, General discussion.

  • lol ripoff

  • Shameless DF clone is shamelessly ripping off DF. You do know you can get your ass sued for this, don't you?

  • @DaRedWunsGoFasta he cant thier both free, if ur making something for free or not realising it u can make anything u want.

  • @blackadder0sporetive You fail law forever. It's the little thing called "copyright infringement", seeing as DF is not under GNU license AFAIK, and the creator of DwarvesH is using THE ENTIRE GODDAMN DF SOURCE CODE, UNMODIFIED! Also l2spell.

For the mouthbreathers claiming that "I really couldn't play DF because of (the absence of) the graphics", one word, two parts: TileSets.

This whole DwarvesH thing is just a fancy version of tileset use, just isometric instead of orthogonal.

  • @DaRedWunsGoFasta yes it would help if the guy realesased source code, second dont be angry it not good for ur health. third this will be a easier way to play dwarf fortress, and so make it easier for new people to play. also the dwavesH cant use the source code as its not realesed and they took a way 1 dimension, where is the source code. oh and its done in java. tilesets are great but it still isnt crysis is it?

  • @DaRedWunsGoFasta yes it would help if the guy released source code, second dont be angry it not good for ur health. third this will be a easier way to play dwarf fortress, and so make it easier for new people to play.. tilesets are great but it still isnt crysis is it?

  • @blackadder0sporetive The idea of going more than isometric is bankrupt. How are you going to play a DF-ish game with "crysis" graphics with a 5*5 embark, 200 dwarves, 150+ animals, a trader caravan and a siege without commandeering a supercomputer with over 500 tflops?

    Also, goddamn 500 char limit.

  • @DaRedWunsGoFasta Well lately I have been having enormous performance problems with the 3D engine which is in no way "crysis" level. The shear complexity and number of items makes it very hard to use 3D and I don't want to compromise gameplay for graphics. I am not ready to declare 3D unfeasible yet, but more on this on my last blog post.

  • @DaRedWunsGoFasta ever heard of optimization, it could be easily done if they optimized it enough.

  • @blackadder0sporetive And you fail at computing. Just the same as you can't compress a blu-ray disk to fit onto a floppy, you can't "optimize" something of that complexity to be run on anything short of a webserver. The way games like WoW (where you get 100+ players sitting in a city littered with objects that ALL need to be rendered) "optimize" is to streamline gameplay by using low-poly placeholders for less important things until your PC is done loading the important stuff.

    Won't work here.

  • @DaRedWunsGoFasta Really? What is with these unfounded claims that can be easily refuted by examining the facts and a little bit of googleing. I am not using any piece of code from DF, Stonesense or other piece of software. The entire code base is 100% new. And unmodified? Then it would be the same as DF and you can see that it is not. And nobody has access to DF sources, so there is no place where I could get them. Also, I would not do anything illegal by principle.

  • It's nice to see more and more people branching out into this genre.

  • Watched this then I read on the blog that this engine is already getting retired?

Shame its really cool, but I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with 3d. Maybe you can sell this one to Toady? :)

  • Ugggh that justman010 guy sperged out and contacted me on private messages. I think I might have to go take another shower. What are the kids saying these days? "He mad?"

Anyhow, you're right on about DF possibly being in alpha forever and needing a lot more polish, but I think there is frankly something wrong with that.

Examples: There's no excuse for bad pathing, and the game would run fine with six temperature levels (MAGMA - STEAM - HOT - NORM - COOL - ICE) etc.

  • Great to see how original developers are these days.

    ... ... ...

Would it have been so terrible to make your own races? Or, heck, even your own plant seeds. I'm not bashing you for copying DF, even as bad as it is to do so, but for being so terribly uncreative.

  • @azkanan If by races you mean the race you are actually playing as, then I do have two additional races planned besides dwarves: hobbits and demons. Hobbits will feel different than dwarves because they have different preferences in the way they create their settlements and their needs, but will be very much Tolkien inspired. Demons will be hidden bonus race, allowing you to experience the other side of the coin and attack your own dwarf and hobbit settlements.

  • If this game is similar to another game but better executed and not totally clogged with two-year-old bugs, shitty code, deliberately fucked-up graphics, nonfunctional necessary features, and an obstinate refusal to do any QC, I'd say its going to be an American success story. Rock on.

  • @misombra

    THIS ^^^^^^^

  • @misombra Better executed? Dwarf Fortress is in ALPHA, do you know what that means? It means it's going to have bugs, because the developer is constantly adding things and making changes, ie fixing the code and supposed "nonfunctional necessary features" (whatever the hell you think those are) and implementing new ones. You've probably only played DF for about 10 minutes and shut it off because either:

    1) You're too dense to try and figure out how to play it or

    2) You're a graphics whore

  • @Jusman010

    1. Your assumptions are bad, dumb, and wrong, including the one you make where DF is ever going to stop being an alpha. Retard.

    2. I never mentioned DF, you drew that conclusion yourself by reading what I was complaining about. Let me know if you can't figure out what the subtext there is. Stupid.

    3. GIMMIE MY AWESOME DF CLONE WITH BETTER EVERYTHING!

  • @misombra 1) No where in my comment did I say that it was going to leave alpha (although it will, only Toady's death could prevent that). As for my assumptions, there's no way you've played DF long enough to form such a strong opinion on it without realizing how misguided that opinion is.

    2) I did indeed draw that conclusion myself, however I don't know what else you might have been talking about, the only other games like this are other DF clones.

    3) No comment, troll harder

  • @Jusman010

I love the dude "I didn't make that assumption in my comment! I don't understand that it was implied by the things I said! I don't understand inference! Now, I will repeat the dumb things I inferred earlier that I have already been told are dumb and wrong, and make the implicit one explicit!"

Good work, champ. I should point out how your stupid logic about the relationship between how long you've played DF and how long you think it's going to remain an alpha is wrong. oops!

  • @misombra Half the stuff you say are a result of you misinterpreting what I say, it's quite hard to maintain a conversation/ argument over the internet when I have to keep explaining myself. It doesn't help that you're being a mite hypocritical

  • @Jusman010 Okay, guy:

    1. Maintaining a conversation over the internet is harder when you have to explain yourself!

    2. "Badly executed can't be applied to DF because "it's an alpha" and alphas can't be badly executed!

    3. I have acted other than in accordance with my professed beliefs, which is the meaning of 'hypocritical!"

    4. Anyone who plays DF for a really long time knows it won't be in alpha a really longer time!

What the hell is the matter with you? Stop posting.

  • @misombra quote "4. Anyone who plays DF for a really long time knows it won't be in alpha a really longer time!"

Well, I have played DF a lot and it let me to believe that it is going to stay alpha for a long time. Maybe forever. And there is nothing wrong with that! I fell like they are more interested in adding more and more of what makes the DF experience what it is, with its good and bad, rather than focusing on polish and accessibility. It is stable enough so they can pull it off.

  • well the code is original, well it should be, he made it... he used stonesense tiles for to demo purposes maybe because he's focusing on coding this thing instead of making the tiles first

as for the concepts, he pretty much did...but keep in mind the he plays DF too he probably wanted something familiar instead of just renaming "miner" to "digger"

maybe in time it'll deviate from DF and be something unique in its own but for now lets not bash it for being similar....

  • @scr3wthegovernment Yes, I am focusing on coding the engine now. As you can see in the first video, at first it was top-down 2D. Then I made it isometric and used one Stonesense tilesheet (16x16) and 7 tilesheets not used in Stonesense. But it quickly became apparent that isometric has a nasty tendency to cover up things behind walls. So now I am working on the 3D engine which I will demo soon. Until the engine is not 100% done, I am not going to create any original graphics.

  • As for the graphics, yes they are from Stonesense and this is no secret. I have permission to use them from the Stonesense creators for demo purposes. And I have over 3 MiB of original graphics from them that is not featured anywhere in current versions of Stonesense, but it will still look similar. I used to include a disclaimer about the tiles, but I stopped adding them to each video once I got permission to use them. And isometric engine is just a stepping stone. I am transitioning to 3D.

  • Hi! This looks a lot like DF because it is my take on the DF formula. With formula being the key word. I have 30 posts on my blog detailing how I'm trying to give a new shape to this formula. Interface and instantly recognizable graphics are a top priority. So is accessibility. The project is in early stages and thus it is more similar to DF than I would like it to be. But the formula will allays stay the same. You have a number of dwarves or hobbits, a hostile environment and you must survive.

  • Neat, you're making a copy of someone's game using someone else's art assets and with a third person's visualizer style. Is there anything original here?

  • @forsaken1111 dont be such a douche man its not like hes making a profit out of it....and he already said so in his blog that it is inspired by Dwarf Fortress and that the stonesense tiles are for demo purposes

  • @scr3wthegovernment I am just asking a question. Does he have any original ideas for this or will it be an isometric copy of an existing game?

  • @forsaken1111 pretty sure you said it sarcastically.

a lot of games are just copies of existing ones too you know... if we went by your rules then we wouldnt have super meat boy we'd be stuck with just super mario..

its not like developer is just going to copy paste all of DF's features

theres only so much you could do to illustrate digging into a hillface in a game are you gonna bash minecraft too?

  • @scr3wthegovernment Actually I think minecraft isn't all that good, but that's not the point. From what I see here the guy behind this has generated no original content at all. That's fine, it's his pet project and he can do whatever he wants, but the presentation is using none of his own content so I asked if he had any original ideas for his game or if it was just going to be a Dwarf Fortress clone with a visualizer slapped on. He has copied many concepts directly from DF, word for word.

  • @forsaken1111 Yes, I have plenty of original ideas. But this is not relevant yet, because there are two parts to the project: the engine of the game and the content. Most of my ideas are related tot the content. Here I am only demoing the engine and the interface. I believe it is far to soon to be labeled a copy or not, but whatever it is, it will be 3D and not isometric.

  • @DwarvesH Good to know. I was just curious if you were using Dwarf Fortress's data as a testbed or if you planned to build a full game around it. Thanks!

  • @forsaken1111 I have a lot of plans with this, but let us assume this pure hypothetical scenario (which I am not doing): DwarvesH is a 100% DF clone. But is has 2010 "indie" level 3D graphics, customizable view points and camera, first person exploration, much improved interface, support for gamepads and user friendly modding tools. Maybe ported to consoles. But in rest it is a pure DF clone. Would that be so bad? It would expose the concept of DF to people who would have never touched it.

  • @DwarvesH If you managed to get every feature from DF into the game with working 'indie 3d' graphics I would be nothing short of amazed. I am honestly not demeaning your efforts here, I am just curious where you are taking this project.

  • Looks like a dwarf fortress clone, and the graphics look like they were riped straight from the visualizer. You should at least include a note saying you were at the very least inspired by dwarf fortress, if not then its just a huge shameless ripoff.

  • Looks neat.

  • Yeah, it definitely seems a lot like Dwarf Fortress.

  • this.... seems an awful lot like Dwarf Fortress.

And the graphics look like the Stonesense visualizer for DF

  • @mager56723 They're from the visualizer.

  • very cool. you said something about 3d being the way to go on your blog, are you still going for that?

  • @scullyy Yes, I am investigating a 3D engine. I have o prototype, but 3D being far from my area of expertise, it will take some time until I am satisfied enough with it and show it to the public. Next video is still going to be isometric anyway.
