Actually the ST is more powerful, but not as fast 0-60.

ST - 223bhp - 0-60 (6.8) top speed - 150mph

RS (mk1) - 212bhp - 0-60 (6.5) top speed - 147mph

Technically the RS should be faster up to say 70-80mph then the higher torque of the ST should win it some ground back heading past 100mph.

Actually the RS never had that much power accelerating, the RS's territory is not a straight line, it's the curves. And by the way, the ST does have 10 more horse power and another cilinder.

It's not the power that makes the difference but the overall control. You will understand if you drive it. It's not so difficult to tune it to 280 HP though...but 350HP is extreme enough for a factory FWD car and I don't think that it could pass the emission standards.

This ST is tuned about to 300hp, I have drove it and believe me it is VERY powerful, more than RS. It also has much more torque. The RS is better in the track though, it is revving easier, it has better setup and it is a little bit lighter. Remember...both RS and the ST are TUNED.

No, it's FWD. You should have noticed at the top gear episodes that they compare it with other FWD "sport hatches" like the Astra OPC and the Golf GTI. The USA ST is the Euro ST170 but with 2.3 engine (of the same type) and some external differences.

not sure what magazines you read, the RS isnt faster than the ST. they are roughly the same but with the ST being a bit more refined.

Engine specs below for both

Standard ST: 2.5, 5 cylinder turbo, 225 BHP 260 ft/lb Torque.

Standard RS: 2.0, 4 cylinder turbo, 212 BHP 229 Ft/lb torque.

so the ST has a bigger engine, more power and torque, but it does weigh more so the power times are generally the same but with the ST having a higher top speed.

yes the ST is heavyer but The standard ST on fords own tests went round the Nurburgring 10 seconds faster than the RS did which having drove round it myself is a bloody scary thing (well for my first couple of laps!)!
