this is where Kiri does suffer. I like this aria sung by Kiri but its Freni and Tebaldi that do this better. Fleming is good despite her voice difficulties (polyps and congestion do take a toll)and she can sing this piece but, give this one to the Freni's and Tebaldi's. Lyrics have a tendency to slur the notes in this somewhat bel canto aria.

both renee and kiri have very similar repertoire and voice- where as fleming may have the volume it is te kanawa that has the purity grace charm and beauty of voice

I watched this production on Tv yesterday.I could only watch the third and the fourth act but Kiri was great! I both like Renée and Kiri in this role ;)

hey renic17, Being a contalto myself, I wish I could singdo that in THAT KEY! If I must compare, Fleming has the decibles and Te Kanawa has the "flow" of notes. Its DEAD EVEN until the last "ave". Te Kanawa takes the prize.  Lyrics will ALWAYS win on Desdemona.

I'm sorry if it sounded detractive. I was just trying to answer some comments posted before. Renée Fleming is a great singer, but I don't agree that Kiri's interpretation is mistaken. And you are right: comparing such great artists is nonsense.

Opera is a theatrical form that sways between artificial and real. It doesn't look real at all, yet, it conveys to the audience deep, real feelings. What emotions should look like? Callas could be quite overacting, but who could parallel her in depth and expressiveness? As it doesn't happen all the time, I think Dame Kiri te Kanawa has made a good choice here and doesn't fall into the cesspool of shallowness.

Renee = BORING (and a gag at the weird sounds she makes now). Kiri is one of the most beloved artists in recent memory. I doubt Fleming will be remembered with such warm fuzzy feelings since she's ruined her voice and sounds like something being strangled every time she opens her mouth. Besides, look how GORGEOUS Kiri is. Renee has never had looks like that.

Kiri souunds really great!

But on the other side Desdemona is supposed to be very sad and fears for her life (she already thinks Otello is capable of killing her at any moment - that's why she so passionately says "Addio" - "Goodbye" to Emilia), but Kiri doesn't show that at all. She looks rather relaxed like in a Sunday morning :-p

I think Renee understood that a lot better...

You have to watch the whole DVD to feel Kiri´s interpretation in its full depth. Awesome! I think she´s much better than Renée Fleming!
