That started years ago as a joke. As if you were afraid of the dark. Therefore you were a chicken.

The story I heard about how chicken lights got started is the truckers that used to haul the live chickens from the farm to the processing plants somehow found out that having lots of the little lights on the trailer gave the chickens the illusion that they were sitting still and kept them calm during the ride to the processor. I don't know how true that is but that's what my CDL instructor told me.
