the suggestion for internet access is so irrational. How in the world would i get internet access or roaming in the middle of the wilderness?, service providers don't go that far, and trust me, if we had internet access everywhere, I would not use a compass, ill rather stick with GPS :)
I didn't know using a compass was so difficult, wth, setting a bearing and all that. The arrow points to the north, turn where the arrow points, and then walk in the direction that you know you need to be (east/west/whatever).
@Lean540 Read my question again, I asked how you would find it without a map? It's a skill question, in a situation in which you only have a good compass.
@1Joyeux Um, ........the video is attempting to teach you how to use a compass to navigate with a map, as stated. If you don't have a map you use landmarks that you may be familiar with, it is quite simple, North South East West, pick a direction and walk. Much better to have a map though, don't ya think?
@Lean540 Ok dipstick, look. If you don't know how to find declination with ONLY a compass, then just say so. Don't repeat the obvious video instruction. Think outside the box... if you can. If not, go away.
I cant seem to wrap my head around this, why don't they just reverse the east and west marking on the compass, so when you are facing sw the needle is pointing sw?
I just lay on my back naked with wood and the shadow tells me the time, true north and what month it is. This skill has been used by time travelers for thousands of years, also it's a great way to hunt bears. Thank you for your time, that is all.
tomarrow i'm going to summer camp and they said that when we get there we have to find our camp using compass and a map so right now i'm pretty much screwed
one of the most important skills to learn is AIMING OFF deliberatly, you know Z it's somewhere to the right of you but it's 2 miles away & foggy, easy to miss in fog/blizzard ok, so deliberatly walk to the Left of Z by at least enough to make a difference no way you would hit Z, then follow, anything that could lead you too Z, river, wall, hillside, rail track, power lines, star trails, the more you practice it becomes easier, as always i reccomend practicing in safe daylight familiar area
thats the basic of it guys, the more you do it the easier and better you get, practice in brilliant sunshine, go out of your way to find obsticles in you way, hills, swamps, unavigable forest, and it get so easy you can do it in your sleep, its a great game and excercise for the kids, get them off that computer & out into the great outdoors Dad's & Mom you owe it to them, get out of the city and into the TGO, BE AWARE though of your situation and the area your vulnerable to WHAT IF & FREAKS
draw a line from you A to your cabin Z place your compass edge along that line, on the map, LOCK it to the map with your fingers, map & compass are now ONE, now turn Orientate only your self bodily until that red Needle sits inside that red ARROW, it will now point the way you have to walk, always keep that RED needle in the REd arrow if you walk around a group of trees or swamp roughly count paces 50 paces to the left means 50 paces to the right as soon as your clear of obsticle, & resume
A to Z on a map you are at A you need to get to Z, you have of course ORIENTATED that map at all times, you have your present position marked point A there is a hill in front of you, according to the map your cabin near the lake is on the other side of the hill, you know that because your map says so, it can see through the hill as can your compass, although you cannot do so, do you walk up & over or around, depends how fit your weakest member is?, how big the hill is, time VS effort,
it is important that you orientate & always mark your present position on the map, so you at all times know where you are, it is absolutly impossible to become lost under that situation, it's usually when people leave it to memory that they become lost, looking at the map turning it & turning it till it means nothing, then thier head goes, orientate orientate at all times, your map will show hills, so look for them hills, point the hills on your map towards them hills in real life ORIENTATION
you have achieved your 1st lesson needle always in the arrow, 2nd lesson you will ALWAYS walk in the direction of the ORRIENTATION ARROW no matter wither north-south-east-west or any other combination ok, now you have to combine the compass with a map, think of the compass as an all seeing eye, through the thickest of fog smoke blizzard or anything nature can throw at you, as long as you know where you are right now, & you have that map, you will always know where you are.
hi guys it quite simple, really your either walking North or South NOBODY everwalks east to west or west to east, they would walk North-east or North-west or South-east or South-west ok, all you need to know is ORIENTATION arrow is either pointing NORTH or SOUTH (1) set declination its always on your map, (2) decide are you walking north or south if north orientation arrow will be pointing north ? ok, if south oreintation arrow will be pointing south ? turn bodily until needle sits inside Arrow
What about the thing where you can find your location on a map with two points and a compass, using the angle that the two lines from these points make?
@necrosigma I agree with that but in class we were talking about what would happen. According to my teacher all our technology would fail because the electricity would flow the wrong way. We would be sent back into the dark ages! Plus when the poles do switch the Earth's magnetic field will fail and we would be hit by the Sun's full strength! That would be one terrible sunburn!
if i have an internet access in the wild, i will not need a compass, I'll just use GPS

Guys, there is a new navigation game specifically design for iPhone devices, called Matmon.
It provides you with an amazing outdoor experience!
The game is based on mission that you create directly on your iPhone!
Unlike similar products on the market - There is no need to load coordinates into your device, you even do not need to know what coordinates are.
You can also share your missions using Bluetooth with other iPhone devices (look for MATMON in the App Store or in Facebook)
