They choose the makers of Twilight to do the Remake of this for America??? I would have chosen Rob Zombie and James Wan. Let Rob Zombie direct the first half with that scary ghoul lady, and let James Wan direct the torture scenes and ending. Some people are saying this is a love story? Are they high? Watch the movie in its entirety. It's not about about love and if that is what the writer of the movie said it was or whomever, they missed the mark by far! It is about whether someone can be a martyr without being religious or something I was trying to wrap my mind around which was what the lady with the turban on her head was talking about as far as why they were doing this.
This was a great foreign film in French with English subtitles for those who actually watched the movie. It was a great film, had a great story. Lots of physical abuse though (a huge guy beating the crap out of a tiny woman) and very sadistic with lots of blood. Some of it was even difficult for me to watch which is rare. I highly recommend this film is you are not squeamish.
@unclealand in my opinion, serbian film was a tour de yawn. Although serbian film did have some good moral conundrums, and a decent ending, I cannot say all of that twisted gore was disturbing. This was mostly because the tone of the film suggested what was to come, so there was no guessing and no surprise.
The seven "Saw" movies had some entertainment value. This movie had none.
The director should be locked away for at least 250 years. The writer needs to be locked up in a prison for the criminally insane. Excruciatingly sickening to watch. I kept waiting for that tortured girl to get free and kill those sick fucks who tortured her. I’d sooner spend 2 hours at a slaughter house. This movie offers an Absolutely Horrid experience.

@TheNemmit nah, serbian film was basically saw-level of narrative taken to oomphteenth ladder of all kinds of disgusting, but beneath the dread, it was actually a damn stupid movie. it's not a masterpiece of tortureporn by any means,because it is essentially how Tom Six would direct saw if he would know what he's doing in the first place. Martyrs worked because of the human factor, the story wasnt too good but it made what it had more effective because you kinda understood what they felt.

I like to see original and innovative stuff. But yes the last half of this flick goes into gratuitous exploitive nonsense. It's akin to the rape scene in irreversible. Twilight producers want to remake this movie with Kristen Stewart in the main role. AND the director wants to change the ending to a less conclusive and obscure one, giving the audience a "glimmer of hope".
This film is really about 2:27-2:31. The most beautiful thing about this movie is that once you get past the (realistic) blood, the (painful to even watch) torture and the emotional breakdown of everyone in the film (including yourself, guaranteed) it's just a story of love - and whatever kind of love you want it to be, not just the same old romantic shit.

@pekinobo I suppose, in the context of artistic licence, the argument can be made that a rock is a feather. But if you get smashed in the face with a rock when you expected a feather, reality quickly sets in as it does in this movie. The over riding theme of this movie was violence against women. The kidnapping and senseless, gratuitous torture overwhelms the love between these brutalized women. Unlike you, I was left with a feeling of revulsion not the warmth associated with love

Ok...first half of the film is really good and intense and makes you want to know more as you dont have a clue where its going to go...second half IMo gets a little boring and gratuitous and perhaps a little silly.. doesnt quite make the grade for me...although I did find the content disturbing..criticism aside though this is definately a director to look out for...good film..disturbing...brutal...but perhaps lacking either budget or the guts to take it that little bit further

This movie wasn't scary at all. I didn't sit through the whole thing because it was boring. I don't know all the philosophical stuff this movie could be about as mentioned below my comment but I just thought it was a strange story, tons of violence, and very unforgiving for the characters in general. I'm sure this is probably one of those movies people consider ground breaking and all sorts of great, but that's just a bunch of fluff. There are better slashers out there.

This is a movie you could talk and speculate a lot about with friends. Much like the original rec (until they forced part 2 trough our throats and got rid of all the mystery).
@EmilyTheStrangeXD1 You missed the underlying mythology I guess, this movie is meant to make you think about the afterlife, motivations, mental health and stigmatization and is heavily influenced by religion (the word "Martyrs" should have ring a bell).
And while the execution has been done a lot this one has been done good, it was raw, dark and the main characters were truly powerless.
the second part of the movie was very deep philosophical and very raw, not easy for everyone to enjoy.

I like pepe above, yeh martyrs is hard core, but this is a movie that you have to think about, it is not easy.I would say that martyrs is kind of in a class by itself, more a thinking person's version of horror, because the horror is us. Martyrs asks us to examine how we feel about this raw depiction, you cannot just sit and watch it. Other movies might be exploitive, martyrs is not.

A thorougly sick, sadistic, depraved and utterly bizarre film that i sort of understand but don't really want to, if that makes any sort of sense. lol
But the film was kind of artsy and shows Europe and Japan make good horror films. It is bizarre and shocking but unique, it's sort of in the vein of The Untold Story or Nightmare (1981) when it comes to movies that are quality yet messed up in the head

Now Inside and High Tension were better French imports i think, those were excellent. Irreversible with Ichi The Killer were the 2 sickest movies of the last decade, Irreversible made me sick when i saw it even with that 10 minute rape sequence.

@TheNemmit nah, serbian film was basically saw-level of narrative taken to oomphteenth ladder of all kinds of disgusting, but beneath the dread, it was actually a damn stupid movie. it's not a masterpiece of tortureporn by any means,because it is essentially how Tom Six would direct saw if he would know what he's doing in the first place. Martyrs worked because of the human factor, the story wasnt too good but it made what it had more effective because you kinda understood what they felt.

@somberlight Not saying it's a masterpiece, I fucking hated it. I'm just saying that in my opinion, it was way more fucked up and disturbing than Martyrs was. After Martyrs, I was like "well, that was messed up. I'm gonna' go to bed now." whereas after A Serbian Film, I was like "Well, excuse me as I go pluck out my eyes and kill myself, because that's gonna' be in my head forever now." But I myself thought the first SAW movie was great, so I wouldn't really link it in with these personally.

This movie is great. Yes it is harsh and probably horribly shocking to most, but its definitely worth watching. I also recommend watching "the girl nextdoor" by ketchum. Pretty fucked up

I like to see original and innovative stuff. But yes the last half of this flick goes into gratuitous exploitive nonsense. It's akin to the rape scene in irreversible. You don't need to prolong something to make a point. Otherwise it is torture porn. I hate to say that but it's true. At least the interesting outcome of the ending kind of redeems that.

Twilight producers want to remake this movie with Kristen Stewart in the main role. AND the director wants to change the ending to a less conclusive and obscure one, giving the audience a "glimmer of hope".

This film is really about 2:27-2:31. The most beautiful thing about this movie is that once you get past the (realistic) blood, the (painful to even watch) torture and the emotional breakdown of everyone in the film (including yourself, guaranteed) it's just a story of love - and whatever kind of love you want it to be, not just the same old romantic shit.

@pekinobo I suppose, in the context of artistic licence, the argument can be made that a rock is a feather. But if you get smashed in the face with a rock when you expected a feather, reality quickly sets in as it does in this movie. The over riding theme of this movie was violence against women. The kidnapping and senseless, gratuitous torture overwhelms the love between these brutalized women. Unlike you, I was left with a feeling of revulsion not the warmth associated with love

Ok...first half of the film is really good and intense and makes you want to know more as you dont have a clue where its going to go...second half IMo gets a little boring and gratuitous and perhaps a little silly.. doesnt quite make the grade for me...although I did find the content disturbing..criticism aside though this is definately a director to look out for...good film..disturbing...brutal...but perhaps lacking either budget or the guts to take it that little bit further

This movie wasn't scary at all. I didn't sit through the whole thing because it was boring. I don't know all the philosophical stuff this movie could be about as mentioned below my comment but I just thought it was a strange story, tons of violence, and very unforgiving for the characters in general. I'm sure this is probably one of those movies people consider ground breaking and all sorts of great, but that's just a bunch of fluff. There are better slashers out there.

This is a movie you could talk and speculate a lot about with friends. Much like the original rec (until they forced part 2 trough our throats and got rid of all the mystery).

@EmilyTheStrangeXD1 You missed the underlying mythology I guess, this movie is meant to make you think about the afterlife, motivations, mental health and stigmatization and is heavily influenced by religion (the word "Martyrs" should have ring a bell).
And while the execution has been done a lot this one has been done good, it was raw, dark and the main characters were truly powerless.
the second part of the movie was very deep philosophical and very raw, not easy for everyone to enjoy.

I like pepe above, yeh martyrs is hard core, but this is a movie that you have to think about, it is not easy.I would say that martyrs is kind of in a class by itself, more a thinking person's version of horror, because the horror is us. Martyrs asks us to examine how we feel about this raw depiction, you cannot just sit and watch it. Other movies might be exploitive, martyrs is not.

But the film was kind of artsy and shows Europe and Japan make good horror films. It is bizarre and shocking but unique, it's sort of in the vein of The Untold Story or Nightmare (1981) when it comes to movies that are quality yet messed up in the head

Now Inside and High Tension were better French imports i think, those were excellent. Irreversible with Ichi The Killer were the 2 sickest movies of the last decade, Irreversible made me sick when i saw it even with that 10 minute rape sequence.
