I saw him live in Greenwich Village in 1987. Forget about it - perfection. I remember he kept saying "someone's messin' with the music" - meaning what was going on in the industry. I'm honoured that I got to see this jazz great.

Horace Parlan, the pianist, had polio as a child.

Quite true, so some fingers of his right hand are paralyzed, which forces him to play certain repetitive runs in his solo's.

as a wide boy,, not as a serious contender

if it wasnt lou in the picture, i wouldnt even bother to hear him play more then 3 notes...
