President Nixon was a contradiction of self. On the one hand he was brilliant at the art of brinkmanship, but on the other hand, a man who would seem to be at odds with himself. I felt particularly sorry for his wife Pat Nixon who, to the very end, put up a brave front, along with the daughters. So sad.
i feel the elevation of Palin within the GOP really italicises the evil dumbing down process that has infected the USA.Carter was clearly an intellectual,Reagan clearly was not.The following Presidents have hidden their intellectual prowess or played it down so as not to alienate the ignorant rabble that constitutes the bulk of the population.Nixon was clearly a man intellectually and morally on a far higher level than Palin. He had the highest values just didn't always adhere to them alas.
@kennedynixon That's David Eisenhower, President Nixon's son in law(daughter Julie's husband), and also President Eisenhower's grandson. BTW, if I remember my history, Camp David, was named for him.
Aussieallover: Stick to your own politics. Crook of the century my ass. President Nixon was the last great American statesman and one of the best presidents we ever had.
I cried the first time I watched this speech. I don't think that Richard Nixon was as particularly good president, but he was a fantastic speaker, probably the best to ever sit in the Oval Office. "Checkers" is another classic. No wonder the commies feared him.
Republicans are destined to shrink in the future: the only people who vote republican are old white rich people, dont believe me: look at the crowds of John McCain in 2008...America is not like that anymore: the fastest growing groups are: latinos, asians and blacks not to mention that already 45% of white people already voted for Obama in 2008 ...reasons are that reps do not support the issues corcerning all these groups,,,in 1980 82% was white...today only 65% by 2020 will be 50%
@Nebel64 are you honestly telling me conservatives, and republicans, have strong VALUES and PRINCIPLES!!!!? what a fucking joke. the fucking republicans have done away with the 4th amendment, they've authorized warrant-less wiretapping and searches of american citizens, tortured when they have condemned it in the past and punished other countries for it, have fought against equality, against civil rights, against gay rights. what fucking principles are you talking about?
@Nebel64 sorry if i misunderstood what you said. i thought you were saying the democratic party lacks principles and values in order to support republicans, when they are ten times as bad, and have absolutely no principles or values to speak of. i agree with what you said, and with your frustration with democrats, as long as we agree that they are at least better than republicans.
@crayyawn You really need to not generalize so much; when you cite the Bush presidency and the Patriot Act, it should not be used as evidence that conservatives and republicans are universally evil. Is Rachel Meadow a good representation of every slightly-left of center Democrat? I think not.
@Nebel64 i did not say that conservatives were universally evil. i was complaining about what conservatives and republicans HAVE DONE, politically. in our system, they are universally fucking evil. minus a few like ron paul. you can't dispute that the conservative minded (aka the republicans and some of the "business friendly" democrats) have enacted such terrible laws. the democrats are to blame as well for the patriot act, thats true. but why is everything filibustered now? they are all shit
I know where you're going. I tell people about what was really behind the '91 Gulf War and people either don't believe me or are amazed. How Kuwait actually started the whole thing, how a US ambassador told Saddam the US has no position on the border dispute etc.
Another thing people don't realize is that RMN actually appealed to Bush41 to impose economic sanctions, arm and fund the Taliban, and let them and their allied tribes drive Iraq out of Kuwait, as Bin Laden wanted to do.
Due to the recession, Bush's numbers in the polls were down and the '92 elections loomed, so he used the situation for boosting his poll ratings. In the end, Bush blew it big time, and the results speak for themselves.
Yeah i laugh every time i hear someone like Rudy Giuliani say terrorist's hate us for our freedoms, not because of Israel and Palestine issues, but for our freedoms. It's excuses like that that just prolong the real problem.
If we had had Nixon in office during the administration of Bush41, we would not be in the situation we are in now.
We wouldn't be in Afghanistan, because Nixon would not have bugled the situation that led to Desert Storm in '91, We would still be on good terms with the Taliban, & Bin Laden would still be an ally of the US.
Still you must remember that these problem we currently face were caused in large part by the Repuiicans. Nixon actually preferred working with more conservative Democrats.
Cant you think of a more creative pejorative than "Communist"?? It's soooooooo four decades ago!
A war in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11?? Corporate fat cats engorging themselves while employees were tossed out like yesterday's newspaper??

a tremendous speech done entirely without notes. this was a side of Nixon enough people did not see. a wonderful heartfelt speech, his family saw this side of Nixon but no one else. they, his family, desperately wished their father could show this side to the public more often but he could not. he had faults no doubt and he put this country thru a real mess but this speech is superlative!
Nixon's gratuitous bombing of Cambodia is not defensible. It was pure barbarism and served nothing in the national interest. The only possible spin that they could and did put on it was to give credibility to the "mad man" strategy of scaring the enemy into submission by having them believe you are crazy, etc. Having said that, he was complex in that he tried to stop Richard Helms and co. from pursuing biological warfare (AIDS?) and maybe lost on purpose in 1960 because he knew about Vietnam.
a man who has done so many great things in his life and his time office but is remembered for one thing alone. history may not see him and better than how he is seen today but that is all irrelevant now.
Nixon was one of the best Presidents we ever had. Clinton as well. Both did stupid things, but got to the White House after a lifetime of getting beat up and bruised. They paid their dues. They were tormented by enemies until they left the White House.
Very different than B. Hussein Obama, who got there not through merit, but by being the luckiest bastard in recent history. Very much like JFK.
w8, i hope u r aware that thats not the most popular thing to say right now. we're all supposed to bow down before the great obama now otherwise, ur racist!hah!
Wow yall mad cause Barack Obama is the next president. hahahahhahahahahhahahahahhahah nana-nana-nana a Democrat is gonna be running washington again, the Good peaceful days are back
conservatives aint mad. see, unlike democrats and liberals, we do know how to be graceful in defeat. obama is the incoming president and we will support him when he's doing the right things. why? because conservatives know better. we dont protest just because we lost and we dont run to the courts either. long live president obama and the office that he will soon represent!
I meant "big picture". The libs always clamor about today whereas a guy like Nixon look to tomorrow because, while tomorrow is not guaranteed, there's always a chance that we need to prepare for tomorrow.
Classic Nixon - "it's not the biggest house or the nicest house..." He always had to portray himself as the modest underdog against the fancy, privileged people - the beginning of the next 40 years of GOP pseudo-populism and vilification of the "elite" of the left. Still... what a difference between this petty crook and the constitution-destroying buffoon who's been sitting in the oval office for the last 8 years. Want to guess who should REALLY resign?
It's only 30 years and the privileged libs and their bitchy parters in whine always try to make themselves look good. They never, ever see the bog picture.
a great president who made a mistake with watergate. I'd take Nixon back anyday over Obama
