President Nixon was a contradiction of self. On the one hand he was brilliant at the art of brinkmanship, but on the other hand, a man who would seem to be at odds with himself. I felt particularly sorry for his wife Pat Nixon who, to the very end, put up a brave front, along with the daughters. So sad.

I cried the first time I watched this speech. I don't think that Richard Nixon was as particularly good president, but he was a fantastic speaker, probably the best to ever sit in the Oval Office. "Checkers" is another classic. No wonder the commies feared him.

I know where you're going. I tell people about what was really behind the '91 Gulf War and people either don't believe me or are amazed. How Kuwait actually started the whole thing, how a US ambassador told Saddam the US has no position on the border dispute etc.

Another thing people don't realize is that RMN actually appealed to Bush41 to impose economic sanctions, arm and fund the Taliban, and let them and their allied tribes drive Iraq out of Kuwait, as Bin Laden wanted to do.

Due to the recession, Bush's numbers in the polls were down and the '92 elections loomed, so he used the situation for boosting his poll ratings. In the end, Bush blew it big time, and the results speak for themselves.

If we had had Nixon in office during the administration of Bush41, we would not be in the situation we are in now.

We wouldn't be in Afghanistan, because Nixon would not have bugled the situation that led to Desert Storm in '91, We would still be on good terms with the Taliban, & Bin Laden would still be an ally of the US.

Still you must remember that these problem we currently face were caused in large part by the Repuiicans. Nixon actually preferred working with more conservative Democrats.

a tremendous speech done entirely without notes. this was a side of Nixon enough people did not see. a wonderful heartfelt speech, his family saw this side of Nixon but no one else. they, his family, desperately wished their father could show this side to the public more often but he could not. he had faults no doubt and he put this country thru a real mess but this speech is superlative!

Nixon's gratuitous bombing of Cambodia is not defensible. It was pure barbarism and served nothing in the national interest. The only possible spin that they could and did put on it was to give credibility to the "mad man" strategy of scaring the enemy into submission by having them believe you are crazy, etc. Having said that, he was complex in that he tried to stop Richard Helms and co. from pursuing biological warfare (AIDS?) and maybe lost on purpose in 1960 because he knew about Vietnam.

Nixon was one of the best Presidents we ever had. Clinton as well. Both did stupid things, but got to the White House after a lifetime of getting beat up and bruised. They paid their dues. They were tormented by enemies until they left the White House.
