Sounds to me like the media are saying black women should avoid success. I think that marriage is less likely for successful women regardless of "race" or skin colour. But the fact successful women are less likely to be married does not mean that they aren't in happy relationships. It means they are breaking loose from the old gender roles of women marrying young, having babies and staying at home. Marriage is going out of fashion. Most women have a successful career first and then a family.

Many black women do choose terrible partners to seek long-term relationships with, but I would definitely have to say the same holds true for members of other ethnic backgrounds. I would also argue that the media plays a big role in BW being more likely to date unsuitable men, because like it or not, our society actually IS influenced by the media- and not in a positive way either...

If your getting your sources anywhere other than the government, the chances of it being grossly wrong is high. Yes the census is not perfect but it is the closest thing to a credible source. My argument was based on the fact that the article made it seem as if this phenomenon is only relative to black women, when in fact, this trend has been seen across highly educated women of all races.
I agree that the media isn't covering the whole side of the story. There are some people who like to be single, and there's nothing wrong with that. Some women are involved in common law relationships with men, though not technically married. Also, I've found that the media, popular culture, and other people often place the blame on Black women because they cannot "find" a man. Well, I would say that the pickings are becoming slim for both black men and black women. We as a people, I feel, are lowering our own standards because popular culture (i.e. "The Black "Mainstream" Media ) makes it acceptable to be uneducated, to be poor, to make bad choices, or all of the above. Collin Powell, who was the Commencement speaker for SC State University, an HBCU, said "Of the 400 graduates, nearly 300 were female and 100 were male." A similar story being told all over the U.S.

I just think that based on my experience from living in the UK and there still being racism but very rare, the fact that races are not seperated and not concentrated so much here means we have less issues that should be taken as a lesson elsewhere.

People need to be more aware of differences in each others cultures as opposed to just ignoring the reality of the situation. I've never been to the UK before, but from what you've said it sounds very similar to Canada in that everyone just lives together as opposed to segregated communities found in the US. I hate when they make statistics for why successful black women are single. This is not a black problem, this is a people problem. Women in higher ranks are usually assertive and aggressive people. Sounds to me like the media are saying black women should avoid success. I think that marriage is less likely for successful women regardless of "race" or skin colour. But the fact successful women are less likely to be married does not mean that they aren't in happy relationships. It means they are breaking loose from the old gender roles of women marrying young, having babies and staying at home. Marriage is going out of fashion. Many black women do choose terrible partners to seek long-term relationships with, but I would definitely have to say the same holds true for members of other ethnic backgrounds. I would also argue that the media plays a big role in BW being more likely to date unsuitable men, because like it or not, our society actually IS influenced by the media- and not in a positive way either...

On average (meaning all races) the divorce rate is 52%, however African Americans have the highest divorce rate and asian people have the lowest.

If your getting your sources anywhere other than the government, the chances of it being grossly wrong is high. Yes the census is not perfect but it is the closest thing to a credible source. My argument was based on the fact that the article made it seem as if this phenomenon is only relative to black women, when in fact, this trend has been seen across highly educated women of all races.

I agree that the media isn't covering the whole side of the story. There are some people who like to be single, and there's nothing wrong with that. Some women are involved in common law relationships with men, though not technically married. Also, I've found that the media, popular culture, and other people often place the blame on Black women because they cannot "find" a man. In term, these women go out into the world believing that they have to settle, which causes serious problems. Why

Also, a comedian on the radio was making fun of the subject by saying, "Why do black women feel the need to limit themselves to black me. Black men most certianly aren't limiting themselves to y'all." And yes, I chuckled to that because the comedian was right. Why should every black woman be paired up with a black man? Why should every black woman be paired up? Did ABC consider the possibilty that these women actually prefer to be single? Smh There are many angles to observe with this topic.

Well, I would say that the pickings are becoming slim for both black men and black women. We as a people, I feel, are lowering our own standards because popular culture (i.e. "The Black "Mainstream" Media ) makes it acceptable to be uneducated, to be poor, to make bad choices, or all of the above. Collin Powell, who was the Commencement speaker for SC State University, an HBCU, said "Of the 400 graduates, nearly 300 were female and 100 were male." A similar story being told all over the U.S.

Crazy chicks with attitudes can and do come in any color and are all over the world. All guys should avoid them at all cost if they want to stay sane.

I honestly think that people should aim to more or less try to not be slient about it....... but more ignore it. I just think that based on my experience from living in the UK and there still being racism but very rare, the fact that races are not seperated and not concentrated so much here means we have less issues that should be taken as a lesson elsewhere.

@DalazG That's definitely a big part of it, and I agree with you completely. People need to be more aware of differences in each others cultures as opposed to just ignoring the reality of the situation. I've never been to the UK before, but from what you've said it sounds very similar to Canada in that everyone just lives together as opposed to segregated communities found in the US. It definitely seems to be a bit better this way.

I'd like to know how this research into black women dating was honestly carried out, im guessing they sample sized a group of black women which should still differ from region to region im still sure. I think this has more to do with over-generalizations and stereotyping which in turn LEADS to the perception amongst impressionable men that black women are less worthy of dating. If it were true that men find black women unattractive, then logically speaking, we could simply analyze racial statistics regarding newborns and identify whether there is a declining trend in the amount of black children being born.

Being that this is obviously not the case, I do find it particularly unconvincing that black women are considered least desirable by men.
