There was a European Count that had one legalized in Alabama, USA in the '70s, although he lived and drove the car in Europe. It had the full comp spec 600 HP engine, although it had a few minor mods like turn signals to make it a "street car". He did limit the final drive to 170 mph instead of the Le Mans ratio of 240 mph, guess that was his way of resisting temptation!!

The engine sound is nice, but I doub't that this is a true-blue 917. If I am not mistaken, just 17 cars were ever buit. Even McQueen couldn't put his hands in one; he drove a "dressed up" 908.

Many of the cars from the film were genuine 917's, but the one from the famous crash scene was (as Testacojones said) a Lola T70 with a 917 suit on. Probably because your feet were behind the front wheels in a T70 - they weren't in a 917. 917 drivers were known to go to extroadinary lengths to avoid crashing front first...

Yes there were some real 917 cars in the movie, but whatever 917 and Ferrari 512 they crashed were Lola T70s dressed up. For the big crash the car was remote control and it needed two people to control it. They messed up and crashed the car while filming, but the crash was so good that they kept it just like that for the film. Oh and Steve did drive a 917, I might be wrong but I think that he only did 120mph during the movie. Good to see how fans the 917 has all over the world.

Just think the old course at the Nerbergring is narrower than this road and cars like the 917 were touching over 200 on the fast bits and thats before they placed the crash barriers in the wooded sections.

They never cancelled races then due to heavy rain and certain parts of the Ring atract water like a magnet.

Those were the true racing days not like todays multi million pound computer operated joke LIKE THE mALAYSIAN gRAND pRIX.

I tried to check the lemans history on the website and didn't mention the mazda 787B as the fastest, but maybe they didn't change.
