The first bow is caused by light being reflected inside the water drops in the sky then refracted out and split into the colour spectrum.

The second bow is formed from light that has reflected twice inside the water.

There is a max angle for the first and a minimum for the second, that is what causes the dark bit in the middle.

This is a very similar rainbow that I had seen on the way home after hearing about my son Chistopher and his accident on his motorcycle only 19 (He is now a Beautiful Angel). I was able to take a pic off my phone and only one rainbow showed up. My son took a pic and the double rainbow showed up on his phone. It was so amazing to see a full rainbow it gave me peace. I believe it means that is in good hands now and I will see him again.
