  • What is the name of the song on your video?

  • Check out " L I N D A" - New Short on my page. Thanks

  • Id love to see the videos have genuine intros, maybe play the sound of the sea for a few seconds, then bring the piano in (while showing intro titles on black) then fade through black to your video? good work though! :D

  • @offspringy Glad you liked it. I have made a new short "L I N D A" which can be found on my page. Thanks !

  • How did you get it to look like this? Looks clear and nice.

  • verry nice song

  • What camera / lens did you use for this? Settings? Filters? This looks beautiful.

  • @GordanNia the aspect ratio is basically how tall and wide any video clip is. Standard definition footage is usually at the 4:3 aspect ratio, or a square looking video. High definition is usually 16:9, or a rectangular video. And now how to change it: in the effects tab in FCP, open "Matte" then drag "Widescreen" to the desired clip. Double click the clip. Select the "Filters" tab in the viewer. Next, use the drop down menu under "Widescreen" (where it should say 4:3 or 16:9) to control the as

  • What is theaspect ratio? How do I get it from 16:9 through FCP?

  • Needs more contrasting I think

  • It looks like a french movie that means : BORING !!!!

  • was that a camera crane you were using when the guy was walking by....nice work man

  • try using some dof effects in post... and slow it down a step

  • byron bay!

  • At 00:28, it's beautiful

  • Too much handheld movment for a shot that is trying to look like film.... also, try under exposing a few stops bcause your water (breaking waves) are burned out too much as well, this is a dead giveaway for video. Tripod with slow movment is the best way to go. If you want to add depth of field lens effects try small amounts of zooming while focused up close on something in macro mode.

  • I like these shots. That piano song is great!

  • these shots are gorgeous!

  • What did you use to give it the look?

  • Indie Film Look*

  • try reducing the frame rate a little bit?

  • what!! howd you get that crain effect?? so amazing

  • Good look!

  • need smoother transitions and less camera movement...

  • It is very well done ... exept the music, sorry

  • if u used the camera i think u did, u spent 11,000 dollars on it. U could buy 55 ipads wit dat!

  • this sounds like fire flower adobe after effects

  • great job !!

  • wow. how did you get that last shot? Was it with a crane?

  • it would look more film looking if there wasn't left and right black sides. I like the moment in 0:39 - 0:44 looks good... espacially I like the camera going the way up... did you use DIY crane?

  • Nice video. What camera, editing program and song are being used?

  • Excellent, would be good trying to do different arears

  • is this song from the truman show?

  • Great song.. Great film...!

  • very nice! How'd you get that spotlight effect?

  • Sony Begas: Bumpmap

  • hahah i use begas tooo

  • VERY NICE!!

  • What tols did you use because im working on my look?

  • Yeah, how did you do the camera raise effect? Really cool video!

  • it's a crane/jib shot, the cameral is on a crane and is raised up and can give some really cool epic shots

  • This video looks kind of amateur (but still great) to be using a crane/jib, which sounds expensive.

  • not really, if you look you can build your own for really cheap, it's less of a crane and more of a fulcrum positioned with a counter weight on one end to balance it all out

  • Not necessarily... you also need a mechanism that will keep the axial plane of the camera constant (ie, if you're shooting parallel to the ground, as you most commonly would, you don't want the camera to rotate upwards, as in a massive tilt). Typically this would be accomplished by hinging your primary support to another support bar, in a parallelogram configuration. It's hard to explain, but if you look at a professional unit you should be able to see what I mean...

  • I know what you mean and it is a fairly simple thing to build on your own

  • True enough; mechanically it's pretty simple and it only needs to be strong--not necessarily precise (as in a follow focus or complex mattebox, which, although simple in concept, do require a fair bit of engineering... but I digress). The jib shot looks good. :]

  • jib arm/crane

  • how did you raise the camera at 0.41 looks good!

  • the last shot looks really good. its a little jerky/shaky but that can be fixed with Smoothcam on FCP. Nice job

  • looks cool!

  • to achieve film look first thing u need to get right is ur video setting. you need to set the fps to 24p for fk sake.

  • Getting a film look is hard for YouTube because of the way they re-encode your uploaded video. Generally speaking, encoding your video to 23.978fps will gain interesting results, however with YouTube it could bash it up during re-encoding for the web.

My encoding for HD and SD is:

    HD

    1280x720p 23.978fps H.264, 5,000,000 CBR. AVC 192kbps.

    SD

    640x360 16:9 23.978fps or 29.987fps H.264, 4,000,000 CBR. AVC 192kbps.

  • you did an amazing job

  • People! I have found it.... its called 'sad motive' and its by Spring Waltz...

  • Love this song!

  • what song is it

  • thanks a lot!

  • this is frustrating. i have tried everything to find this music. even shazam didnt work. I NEED THIS SONG!!!

  • FUCKING MUSIC? what is it?

  • Wow impressive :) good job!

  • Nice work!

  • EPIC WIN!!:)

  • REALLY nice!

  • Nice job. I'm impressed

  • did u have a jib or something cuz i saw the camera floating up!

  • How did you managed to get 24p in Sony Vegas? Please tell me how to edit my clip like this. Help would be appriciated!

  • you would want to get the camera to film in 24 p

  • I'm using a JVC Everio, which is not that advanced. Is there a way to edit the clip so the result will be in 24p?

  • haha well im no expert dude and i use sony and canon cameras usually but you will probly wanna go into the menu and usually somewhere in there theres a picture of a tape or it says tape or recording options etc. anyways fiddle around with it and it doesnt need to be EXACTLY 24 p just as long as you can slow down the rate of film hope that helped lol

  • I've got the recording option, what should I do next? I can't 'fiddle' it out, lol. =P

Does this mean that I have to record with my USB cable in the laptop, and walk around with my laptop while recording? Haha, I don't get it. Please explain it more detailed, thanks!

  • ooooh i see no no no its not quite like that. 24 p is a measure of the rate of frames per second which the camera films at. Its irrelevant to the computer. for example if you wanted to film something really slow it would probably be filming at a much higher rate of frames per second than the camera in this video, which is filming at 24 p. if you hve trouble you should see if you can find an online manual on google for you camera or something like that. hope this helped

  • yes, I think it's called revers telecine or kinescope which allows you to convert 30fps into 24fps on some non linear editing programs, however I'm not to sure

  • is weird, I meant

  • nice. Should freeze last frame then fade to white, the flash then freeze it weird.

  • good question, what piece of music is it? sounds nice...

  • what is the song?

  • how do you make those dark edges on 0:32 ?

  • There's something about it that just isn't convincing as film. I think it's the low dynamic range and the infinitely deep focus of digital. The static shot was the closest, though.

  • @bilbomarks

If he added some contrast to it but shot with a higher shutter speed, it would more closely resemble the look and jitteriness of film. 1/48 is recommended, but go higher than that and you get more strobe.

  • @donmation Slower shutter speed gets you more jitter. Faster is smoother.

  • @bilbomarks

You are half right. Let me explain: a higher shutter speed means more of your scene is in focus (assuming you don't zoom). The more you have in focus, the more static each frame looks because you have less motion blur- and more strobe.

You are correct to say that a lower shutter speed than the native frame rate also causes jitter- but this is for a different reason. When you lower the shutter speed too far, you also drop your frame rate because the shutter is closed longer.

  • @donmation What? I don't think shutter speed has anything to do with focus at all. That's more the realm of aperture. More open means shallower DOF.

  • Comment removed

  • @bilbomarks

    @bilbomarks

You're still only half right. Yes, an open iris will make the focus shallower, but strobe has everything to do with the staticity and clarity of each frame. The more motion blur you have, the less strobe. The lower the shutter speed, the more motion blur. Depth of field, aperture, and shutter speed are all related to each other.

  • @donmation I'm not trying to be right or wrong. I'm trying to figure out what you mean. I've never heard of strobe. Do you mean flicker?

  • @bilbomarks

I haven't done live action, but in animation Strobe is another word for flicker. It's usually used to imply jerky movement, while flicker connotes inconsistent exposure levels from one frame to the next. I'm not trying to patronize you, but you're posting inaccuracies and claiming them as fact. Just read what you wrote... Why on earth would a low shutter speed be more jittery? In live action, video has long been considered un-filmlike because of its 1/60th shutter speed.

  • The higher your shutter speed, the less the motion blur. Motion blur makes moving objects appear to be smooth because of their lack of spatial definition. Because of persistence of vision, anything in sharp focus moving too fast will jitter because your eyes can not connect up the images as well as they can when it's out of focus. This is basic film theory. I only know it this well because it crosses over into animation. Live action and animation use the same illusion to convey movement.

  • @donmation I film often hense my intimate understanding of how s.s and aperture affect the image being reproduced. But I think what we have here is a misunderstanding of terms.Semantics. jittery for example is a subjective term. What it means to you could be completely different from what it means to me. Now I have a camera in my hand right now and around 1/8th S.S. the image starts jumping and seemingly skipping frames. "jittery". You say mine are text book definitions and inaccuracies. What?

  • @bilbomarks

Now we're getting somewhere! You are thinking in terms of less than 1/48 of a second. I don't have a DSLR that can shoot video, so I have no experience with that, but the Kodak Zi6 drops its shutter speed in low light, halving the frame rate so what you've said about 1/8 of a second looking stuttery, that makes sense. But considering that a shutter speed that low is not generally used in live action cinematography, except for a certain effect, that's where I got confused.

  • @bilbomarks mouvement and some bad choise of plans.

  • that was very nice. maybe u could get less color and more contrast.

and did u use 24p fps? (that is 23.97 i think) cuz i think that this is something they use in movies.

    love it

  • film should have a high dynamic range. adding contrast just does the opposite.

  • yeah maybe but removing contrast would make image too gray so...

let it be that way it is...

  • what Cam did you use?

  • dont like the music

  • U dont like the music?? OMG!!! this is perfect! what are u talkin about???

  • What is that piece of music? the piano?

  • I think the best way to get the "film look" is to shoot with a bolex H16 (a 16mm camera, $250 off ebay) using 16mm short ends bought from a vendor in hollywood or off ebay ($5/100'). Then get it processed with a student discount, edit it with a film splicer (cement not tape) and telecine (sd with a student discount) That will get you the film look, by shooting on film.

  • no shit?!

  • But people still want to shoot video and make it look like film, because people have a dilusion that film is too expensive to be lagisticaly possible, but when you are diligent with film, and take the time to research the best deals and shoot short ends/recans/buybacks, you can make a 15min short shot on 2 perf 35mm for $250 more than one shot on a red.

    cheaper:

    -lighting

    -crew (digital tech)

    -Set up time (no cables)

    -Diligence taught no, 300:1 s-ratio

    -camera rentals (2 day week)

  • Just like in the music world, everything is digital but they try to get the vintage, analog sound.. it's because we want things to look and sound like the stuff we grew up watching, but we want the convenience of digital technology.. actually shooting in film sucks and is hard.. shooting in digital then clicking on the "film look" plugin is way easier.. some day we will want to replicate youtube videos or some stupid shit lol

  • What if you want sync sound? What does that do to your 16mm budget?

If you want to do music videos fine, shoot 16mm, but not if you want to do dialogue for a low budget.

  • thebloodbeach,

I agree, I love shooting 16mm on music videos and on nature documentaries (stuff that normally doesn't require sinc) however, a good CP16r (reflex) camera can be bought for $1000-1750 on ebay, this camera is chrystal sync and is quiet enough to record sync sound (the blair witch project film portion+almost all news pre-digital), another more expensive alternative is the arriflex 16BL ($1750-3000)

This is still cheaper than most video cameras (up front investment)

  • hi everyone thats cool ı mean great video looks professionel even though it is home made...bu there is something ı wonder so much. what is the music?who is that playing the piano? is there anyone who knows? please telll us

  • Comment removed

  • i like the subtle vignette in some of the shots. that skuttling bird on the beach is prime nation geographic shots

  • how did u do the elevation shot 0:42 using a crane or something? :S

  • the cranes are called jibs

their pretty easy to build and get great shots

  • Of all the Filmlook video yours is the best.

    I'll experiment with the following:

    Canon HG10 in 24p Cinemode

    EnCinema 35mm static dof Adapter

    Sony Vegas Pro 8.0

    Sony Vegas Color Correction adjustment

    Sony Vegas Color Curves adjustment

And of course lighting, lighting, lighting.

    Anything missing?

  • Comment removed

  • Very nice, actually! I think you could adjust the color curves a bit to make it a LITTLE better, but very nice. How did you do this?

  • needs levels adjusted, needs to b more dynamic. and with that kinda music it feels like it should be slowed down. like filmed in 60i and slowed to 23.97. increase the red curve and lower the blue. more contrast. that'll look more like a film then

  • if u think film look is just 2.35:1

    yes,u did it

  • woah how did you do the crane shot when the guy was walking away on the beach?

  • its called a camera crane or a camera jib

You can make your own using stuff from home depot or buy one online for 400 bucks...

  • Very well shot. The saturation control was spot on.

  • as small that the image is, soooo grant is the result - wondeful !

  • Where do you find this musiiic???

  • great shots , Really impresed :DD:..work a little on the colors... make it a little warmer adding some red :D

  • I cannot get that music out of my head! what is it? pls. can someone tell me! i'm going bonkers!

  • i left a video response of one of my videos that is similar to this one...tell me what you think

  • cinescope <3

  • What camera was used

  • It's perfect. Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial on this?

  • Can I also, if possible, i'm using sony vegas 7 with the hv20 as well.

  • that was rather good i must say

  • I'd like to see what you could do with a 35mm adapter and some nice audio gear now that you have virtually perfected this.

  • I have to say I watched all three of your film look tests, which I think were all shot on DV. They all looked phenomenal! The cinematography was most impressive for me. Whoever is cam oping your shots is doing well, and the whoever is designing the shots is equally as good. Closely followed is the post production work. The color correction was superb! I wish I could of heard some of the audio, but I am guessing all you had was the on camera mic. In which case the music was a nice touch.

  • Awesome work! Inspiring! What is this piece though?

  • Anybody knows the name of this song? I liked it.

  • What is the music you are using?

  • Great!!!

  • u can now be a music video director

  • great!! the leaf in the water, the bird running, the colors..! I can only say GREAT!

  • How did you do that? You should post a tutorial

  • this is natGeo wild !!!

    hahahaah ;)

  • Nice job.

  • at :40 perfect crane shot + scenery + silence of the waves + timing of the piano + slow emotional feel = best film like scene you can achieve. imo.

  • one of my fav vids. extremely beautiful shooting and footage

  • perfect. what is the song name for the music?

  • calling this beautiful would be a textbook case of understatement.

Every scene had me in awe of what you've achieved.

I mean how did you get the crane effect, with the camera rising into the air? Looked really professional and I'm bending my brain trying to figure out how you did it! lol

    Keep it up, my friend.

  • a jib

  • hahaha

  • haha i no right, what a dumbass

  • Please could you post camera used, and settings, any lens adapters etc. This footage is spectacular.

  • attempt successful

  • this is amazinG!! how did u do this??? if u dont mind sharing

  • very nice... is that hawaii?

  • wow!!! great work :O:O wtf this is the best "look-like-movie" i ever seen :D:D

  • Good effort fella

  • really great. amazing shots. nicely done. looks like film to me.

  • i love the cinematography! i feel like watching a european insurance firm commercial, nicely done there!:)

  • This is youtube, how can you all tell if it looks like film or not?

    Depth of feild?

  • is it 25p?

  • OMG!!! I LOVE THIS!!!

  • looks really good, wuts up with the letter box though its kinda thick?I see you used the media generator and some color correction.

  • where is this? nice location :)

  • Very film-like, very nice :) What are you doing to the video to get this result? It looks great.

  • i just tweak the colors thats about it. try that and u'll know what i mean

  • yup colorista is quite simple

  • Last scene is excellent(was it shot with a crane?). Got the film mood in full. In the earlier scenes a few camera shakes spoof the effect, but quality image is top notch.

  • yes you got it!

  • wow a add to my fav.

  • Did you balance on a light blue card? Because that was my first impression.

    Video looks good!

  • light blue balance would've made it look warmish. I think its the opposite

  • What camera is this man?

  • great job!

  • I really liked the crane shot. It really makes it look more professional! Great stuff for DIY.

  • looks like a documentary on the discovery channel. still better quality than most youtube vids.

  • excellent 5/5

    but did correct the colors

  • that is totally the east coast of hawaii, nice boom.

  • Damn, i've watched the video again.

And i'd swear i was expecting the voiceover of Jeremy Clarkson coming in..

  • hahaha thanks ! glad that u like it

  • hue color add solid some secrets, its easy

  • looks beautifull dude

  • thank you !!!!

  • Beautiful!!

how did u do that? i've been trying to do that for soo long lol.

your really amazing at editing :D

help me if you can :D

  • colour grading in vegas and output to 24fps thats just about it mate. enjoy
