@jazzzbaby I think all of us who know this movie first saw it on Night Flight back then--and Breaking Glass as well. Early 80's were so awesome--those days seem so long ago now.
Does anyone have a copy of the super rare Sound-Track that was only down loadable for two days from I-tunes when the DVD came out from Rhino??? They pulled it after 2 days because of legal clearance issues, but during those 2 days there must have been some Super-Fans who did download it and have copies for those of us in need.. I've been looking for it since 1981, 29 years!!!!! Send me a message with good news, PLEASE.. Thanks!! > : )>
This movie, absolutely, one zillion percent was the Coup De Grace which implemented the tween Rock wanna girl Dream!. Aired on HBO one suburban teen angst ridden evening circa 83-84, dad offered to set the VCR next time it aired, and dream was therefore implemented.
Who knew you could run away from home and start a Punk Rock band?
I hope this next generation of up and comers will be just as inspired by the story of Corrine Burns and her band as we were.
I just got this movie on DVD and I love it. It seems like a pretty realistic story about an abrupt rise to fame, then the crash-and-burn. I think I liked Fee Waybill's performance best; he came off as so petulant and pathetic and washed up and it was so believable! A lot of great actors here, especially as some of them hadn't appeared in fims till then.
I saw this film when I was in high school which was between 1983-1987 on HBO. I could not get enough of it. I sang the songs everywhere I went, it aIso inspired me in my life. I even taped it off HBO but my stupid older sister taped over it. I was never able to find a copy anywhere. Now that I know that I can find it now I will hunt it down. I fell in love with Diane Lane after I saw the film. This film with the right promotion could go the way of Rock Horror Picture Show.
Excellent - this movie has a dark reality that is as present today as it was in early 1980. This movie will be studied in History of Film classes for 100's of years...It's the beginning of 1980's music and culture...it's also a story about hopelessness turned into triumph, and about making something of your life and not settling with just existing. It's a bold message.
I, too, taped this from Night Flight. I laughed/cringed when I watched it the first time--and totally fell in love with Ray Winstone. I love him as an actor to this day, no matter how much weight he puts on--but, okay, maybe Henry VIII size was a bit too much! In fact, I got interested in the Fabulous Stains cuz Ray Winstone was also in Showtime's Robin Hood and I couldn't believe it was the same guy: "Wait, was THAT a really young punked-out Ray Winstone I just saw on Night Flight?"
I just watched it for the first time on TCM (Turner Classic Movies). It was great! I love Diane Lane. And I can see why Bon Jovie loved her too. I would have dated her in a heart beat. Even though she was just acting, she seems to have a real Rebel soul in her.
Loved this film. I think I remember seeing it on "Night Flight" in a truncated and commercial-break filled form. I always associate this film with another very good film of the time "Breaking Glass", about the rise and fall of a punk band. That film had a song I like to put on mix CD's called "The Eighth Day".
I recently got this movie on DVD and it has become one of my absolute favourites. I love it and relate to Corrine (sp?) so much. I wasn't even born untill '89 , and I'm glad that this film is still floating around and avaliable to a whole new generation of girls. I feel it's a must-see ; these days young women have so few powerful role models. I like to think i have more to offer the world than the ability to shak my ass , and this movies gives me hope. lol
Well he should have asked me, I would have remembered. I too was mezmerized by the movie on late night TV. I LOVE the music, being a total riot gyrrl fan. Professionals was my fav song and one of them to this day. Glad it's available.
I haven't seen this flick since it first scorched my brain back in 1980 on late night TV!!! What A FIND!!! I have been waiting for 20 years for this to come back out on DVD along with the The Decline of Western Civilization 1. Many Thanks for this cinema nugget. This was the first movie that I fell in love with Diane Lane over. WOW!!!
I just saw the newly released video. The special features has commentaries by Diane Lane and Laura Dern. Also Lou Adler has a commentary Track. The film is a kick to watch the three young actresses and especially the musicians, Weybill, Simenon, Cook etc...
YES! I have a DVD RIP of the master copy that was provided to the Canadian Film Board. It is the best version out there. This documentary I found online.
I live in Vancouver where this film was shot. Another great film that is hard to find is "Terminal City Ricochet" which starred Jello Biafra, Nomeansno, and DOA amongst other great punk rock icons. I miss the good old days of being able to go to shows at the many venues we had like the New York theater and the Nappy Dugout.
I saw this in the early 80's on USA. I stayed up to see it repeated late in the night. Didn't see it again until a year ago when I found the DVD. I'm one of those 87 people who saw the film. I'm sure all 87 of us are fans!
I watched this on USA Night Flight and still have the VHS tape I recorded in the 80's. A few years ago I bought the DVD uncut version. You can find copies online.
I remember watching the movie on HBO when it first came out. I only remember the end video now, but that is do to reasons beyond my control. It's funny how I can loose my high school years, my sisters wedding, and many other things. But Join The Professionals has stuck in my head.
I thought it was on, "ON" TV. Pre-HBO and showtime. Probably wrong. I do remember having one box for a specific movie service. I also remember the late night porn being very visible and audable even with the squigly line, And the short subjects which I miss. Does anyone remember ON tv?

Great movie...but if a 14 year-old (Diane Lane in 1980) showed her nipples today like she did in the film, the whole crew would be arrested!
