Master Clark has passion and I respect that. He is in love with chinese culture with regard to martial arts. It seems that his students or listeners do not fight the way they shadowbox or use form. My book discusses this as well as some of my articles. I am not chinese nor do I fight like one or like most asian fighting systems. However, my expression of traditional asian form and method is western and I fight like a western martial artist possessing such knowledge as do most westerners.
"The last person.."? What about Jet Li? Jackie Chan? Kung Le? Shi Yan Ming? Liu Qing Hua? Ray Park? Donnie Yuen? I find this mans speech to be just a bit hyperbolous, both in its sentiment on nationality of this art versus that art, and on his "strong" words.... Such a person claiming to be a "Master" shouldn't posture so brashly.
Nice speech. That said, I respectfully disagree on the Bruce Lee statement. There are lots of masters doing something for Chinese Kung Fu. Of course they don't have the fame, or the reach that Bruce Lee had, but that doesn't mean that they're doing nothing.
I disagree a bit. Good training is not about the system but the person. Everything must be a reaction, not thinking oh i'll use this movement or this movement. And we should look for our similairities not our differences. But word if he'll pay me I'll represent Bagua Zhang.
The military have war games. You use real or live round on targets. You use blanks when firing at other soldiers. You can't shoot at each other with real bullets. Tournament are not a litmus test for effectiveness of a martial art. Chinese kung fu is a fighting art. Tournaments are for sport. Some arts are better suited for sport than for real confrontations.
But the tournament fighting of kung fu artists doesn't look like modified Snake, or modified Crane, or modified Eagle Claw. None of the stances, movement modalities, or methods of generating power are used- it looks almost exactly like sloppy kickboxing in the vast majority of cases. Why are the systems so resistant to modification as to sport-fighting situations? One would think the footwork, the kicking- *something* would translate.
And you don't stop until the enemy is totally defeated. Snake style strikes to vital points and soft points. A snake strike to the eyes or the temple will seriously injure someone. I understand what the teacher is saying but it is not practical for sparring. Tournaments are just that a friendly gathering to demonstrate our arts. The military have war games. You use real or live round on targets. You use blanks when firing at other soldiers. You can't shoot at each other with real bullets.
I mean no disrespect but, Chinese martial arts are fighting systems. A fighting system and a sport are very different. We have to modify systems for the sports arena. When you do that A system will loose some of its flavor. It will not look the same. Snake, crane or eagle claw kung fu will not work in a sparring environment. You cannot use a tiger claw strike to the face or to the throat in a sparring tournament. In a real situation you always strike the weakest point
A noble statement and noble sentiment. I hope it's practicable, too, but I really don't know how practical unmodified traditional kung fu is for sparring purposes.
Wow. This was very powerful. Typical Master Clarke. He speaks from his heart and expresses what we as Chinese Martial Artists would all like to aspire to. We must stay pure to our Art when we are challenged. I agree that this philosophy can be applied to many things in life.
Chinese Kung Fu needs to look at MMA to see how to make their systems effective. Train like you fight. Fight like you TRAIN. Learn to deal with BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing. If not you are kidding yourselves.
Sifu Clarke is a scholar and a gentleman. Thanks for your demonstration at the deThouars family gathering this year. Your support is appreciated!- Conrad

First, Shut the fak up and second, use what works, not the flowery crap that makes up most kung fu styles.

Chineeese boxing....but the Chinese tradition is to not properly teach non-family or non-Chinese. They only have themselves to blame.
