I do think they are doing a good job, raising the living standards for residents. They just improve the streets and widen them (that is good, thinking of fires and so on). It would be sad if they would build skyscrapers. But this way, I think all residents profit from it.

The Downtown Backpackers Hostel in that Hutong is a great place to stay if you're ever in Bei Jing. Great staff, great atmosphere. They really make you feel at home.
