BTW: It's NOT a .30 it's a .50 cal. If anyone has any doubts just pause it on the screen shot of the ammo box. It clearly states: AMM.BOX CAL .50. The US Coast Guard still uses them to this day.
GREAT SCENE! I loved when Michael Caine notices the .50 cal then looks down at them all in perfect position! The smirk before he rips off the cover says it all! "You're all fucking dead!" LOL!
This is exactly what that scum out of Somalia calling itself pirates deserve - kill them all and dump them for the sharks. How pathetic we let that rabble kidnap and then demand ransom. That trash deserves nothing but death.
I couldn't agree more. The scum deserve to be shot down without remorse or a judicial process. It's all about being politically correct and not offending anyone, we can't kill them because that is offensive! SO WHAT????
This was the greatest 50 cal scene ever made until the newest Rambo flick in 2008. Rambo turned a 50 cal on a guy sitting in the front seat of the truck the gun was mounted on and just SPLATTERED the fucker! And that was only the beginning. Stallone then transformed a whole freakin' army (and a boat crew) into hamburger meat!! Yum Yum.
That barrel would be fucked up.....remember when firing the 50cal....you do it in short controlled burst. In intervels of "DIE MOTHER FUCKER"....pause...."DIE MOTHER FUCKER" "DIE MOTHER FUCKER"....pause...."DIE MOTHER FUCKER" "DIE MOTHER FUCKER"....pause...."DIE MOTHER FUCKER" "DIE MOTHER FUCKER"....pause...."DIE MOTHER FUCKER"
Looking at a closeup (on a different video of this scene), it says "Cal 50 M2." So .50 caliber it is. Even though the rounds in the same still aren't NEARLY large enough. Ah, Hollywood.
@antarcticamoon given the way that crew on the Coast Guard cutter got so easily overwhelmed, I don't think they were top notch in any area including gun safety.
@tommy1138 -- that's a .50-- the vented shroud does make it look a bit like the .30, but the 1919's a much smaller weapon. It's probably two different guns-- a propane operated prop gun that looks like a modified M3 and then a real M2. (Notice at 1:44 on the profile view that the M2 barrel support is visible, but the gun at 1:18 doesn't have one.)
I taped this off the Movie Channel in the 80's and used to watch this scene A LOT. I would just rewind it and see the pirates get mutilated by that Browning .30 (it is a .30, not .50) over & over again. Coast Guard ships still used Browning deck guns in 1980 btw. It's a mystery as to why this is not on DVD in the US. I just bought an Australian version last week because I was tired of waiting for Paramount to get off their asses and release The Island (and The Keep).
@tommy1138 i know i tried to make a request at the library, they checked every library in the system, none of them had it.movie rental is free at the library.
GREAT scene! Only other movie that I have ever seen where someone fires a "belt-fed" weapon like that ((nonstop-without regard for the condition of the weapon afterwards)) is in a movie called "Castle Keep" with Burt Lancaster. He is up on the ramparts of the castle at the end of the movie and he is firing a .50 caliber (I think Caine is firing a .30 in this scene here). If you haven't seen that movie (it is an oldie) then I suggest you get it for just that very scene!
does anyone have the scene right before this with the coasties going to and from the island in the little boat? id appreciate the post greatly...thanks
For those of you who liked the movie, I thank you! I am actor in the movie playing the portuguese boy that gets in the head at the end of this clip--Manuel.
I thought of this movie when i first saw the ending of Season 1 of "Lost". The scene where Mr. Friendly and the others kidnap Walt from the boat. I wonder if the lost writers were giving homage to this movie.
That's a Browning M1919A4, .30 caliber machine gun he's shooting.
The M2, .50BMG is much larger.
But as they look pretty much the same it's a reasonable mistake. All you really have to do it look at the size of the person next to the size of the gun.
This movie wasn't the greatest, but still very watchable. The book is one of the best pieces of fiction I ever stumbled across, though. It gives a much more detailed look at this pirate colony and their customs.
I remember seeing this movie in the theater when I was little. The book is better, but the movie for some strange reason has an appeal to it. Rather well done, with some corney acting.
I have a print of this movie on VHS. I don't believe it has ever been released on DVD. It's a shame. They should release this one on DVD.
Just a brilliant, exciting ending, perhaps one of the best of the '80s. The viewer reaches the point where he NEEDS to see the pirates die - all of them, violently, finally, brutally. Total catharsis.
