I mean that whole argument is so overplayed in american history books. sure that was a contributing factor that the Americans fought in their own backyard and the british were unfamiliar with it, but the main decisive actions that actually determined the outcome of the war were fought in open field. people forget that loyalists like butler's rangers also fought with the same tactics as the militia.
people always say that the british lost because they hadn't fought guerilla warfare before but they did. They fought alongside the colonials in the French and Indian war. hell the british pioneered light infantry tactics in the wilderness with roger's rangers. In the revolution there were several units that existed for that sole purpose; light infantry regiments, skirmishers, hessian jager corps, blackwatch highlanders.
At 2:18, I've been to where this was filmed, and the water is over 6 feet (and filled with gators), so I have always wondered what they put there to walk across (later they have horses walking across a significantly deeper part).
REMEMBER THE AMERICANS ONLY WON BECAUSE OF THE FRENCH AND THE AMERICANS HID IN THE WOODS AS THEY WERE NO MATCH FOR THE WELL-TRAINED BRITISH ON THE BATTLEFIELDS
The French primarily provided aid with their Navy. They did have ground troops as well but most of the victories were because of American militia. It was the guerilla tactics and knowledge of the land that gave America the edge. British troops were great with normal Battlefield tactics, but relatively inexperienced in guerilla style warfare.
@irishwemo we DID, or were you asleep in history class? The English were not used to "guerilla" style warfare like in this scene, they were only effective when in regiment formation, which is a major reason why they lost the revolution.
It was tavington and few others that would actually tortre them. The redcoats, such as the captain of the hussars, and the officer that thanked mel, were both merciful and had their moments of "mercy"
The colonists were British - they rebelled because they didn't want to pay taxes and they wanted to keep their slaves.

@MrJahka anti-English in the case of Braveheart. The main point is that Mel Gibson is a douche

Even history class fails to explain this time period fully.
And Hollywood has never been a subject matter expert on history. Facts aren't fun; distorted facts sell movies.

Okay seems i've gotten into a little bit of the debate here.
More like all the other failed rebellions, in 1798, 1803 and 1867.
