I grew up surfing down there and i learned the hard day once, I was 14. I've seen people in the hospital from the wedge, i just got the wind knocked out of me. Anyway the real challenge is the art of turning a wipe out into a roll out. Catching and riding the waves is one part, but the fine art of rolling out of it at the end is mandatory and its a great part of the art of surfing to learn. I used to have nightmares of big sunamis crashing down on me after that....big 300 foot ones....

This brought back some great memories. When I was in Junior high school, back in the 70s, my friends and I used to body surf the Wedge. Unless you've been there, it's hard to explain how wild the wedge is. These waves will fold on you and absolutely pound you into the sand, if you don't know how to surf them. Just the words, "Let's go to The Wedge!" would fill body surfers with fear and excitement. It was a lot of fun, but terrifying too. You'd better be a strong swimmer to handle the Wedge

What makes the wedge so gnarly is the fact the break water is so damn shallow... I broke my collarbone back in 1994 bodyboarding the wedge... It was a about a 12-15 foot day. Needless to say, I wiped out, and literally was face first in the sand. There are so many spinal cord injuries at this place. It's straight dangerous.
