  • WANT. Want want want want.

  • this is great.

  • that sounds surprisingly good. whoever did the analog section knows what they were doing.

  • @AppliedCryogenics The analog section... is just two resistors connected to a digital output pin!!!

  • There must be times the pokemon music imitate 1999. HAHA.

  • Hi, with this, can I play with a keyboard?? and record it to my computer :O? hehe I have been looking for something like these!

  • Sure, as long as your kerboard has a MIDI out. I have a Virus KC and it works just fine! :) However, neither the Uzebox AVCore or Fuzebox has the MIDI interface, you'd have to build one yourself...

  • Most KEyboards, if any keyboard doesn't! have a MIDI out, it's hard to find one without it.

if your keyboard isn't a childs 10 dollar one, it'll be fine!

  • Link :3

  • Guys, please stay polite *at least*, or I'll have to erase all these comments. According to the writer of the iNES emulator, the NES *VRAM* is made of two banks of 8K plus there's another 2K of working ram.

    fms . komkon . org / EMUL8 / NES.html

  • No, the default setup has not "2kb" of onboard memory, "2kb" means 2 kilo BIT of memory, which, which actually contains THREE faults.

It has in total _4_ KIBIBYTES of memory, which includes the VRAM.

Wrong again, you changed your initial statement to avoid making yourself look like a fool,

"only used to store little things like score and position"

This is what you said, see the word "ONLY" here?

You said it ONLY uses it to store LITTLE THINGS like those two examples, which is WRONG, WRONG.

  • Wrong.

RAM is used for a LOT more than storing merely the score and position in a game.

Please don't make statements about programming without being a programmer.

RAM is used for i.a. keeping track of the entire state of the game which can be a lot, and several games dynamically generate content based on an algorithm which is stored in RAM also.

RAM is also used every time a sprite is drawn! Which is about ALL THE TIME.

Also, the NES has 2 kiB VRAM and supports 8 kiB expanded memory as well.

  • asome

  • Nice synthesizer sound.

  • Great work, and website!

    Brad

  • Unfortunately it must be built. Neither the 2 commercially available kit have included the MIDI interface. Moreover, since there was not much interest for it, I don't maintain the code anymore. :( So I guess you're better off with you NES solution.

  • this unit has great sound!!!

  • Where can i learn how 2 do these things?

  • Is the uzebox built using the arduino?

  • Nope. A single plain Atmega644. All the 'kernel' sound and video functions were developed from scratch. Plus I don't need a bootloader like the Arduinos, so I have 4K more for my programs! :))

  • Is the sound chip related to the one in the gameboy color? It sure sounds VERY similar

  • There's no sound chip in fact. It's more like emulation. The CPU renders 3 wave channel plus a noise channel. It can model the NES/GB sound chip or can do even better, since I'm not limited to square waves. I can have swatooths, sine, and even PCM samples.

  • WOW

I want to know how to do these things

    chiptune rules!

  • Dude,YOU ARE A FUCKING GENIUS!

  • nice, but NTSC (and PAL) really suck! In Europe, we have scart connector, we can use RGB!

  • Yeah a bit, but I did with what we have here. However when using the S-VIDEO out, images are pretty close to RGB...

  • Could this run NES rom files?

  • Theoretically, perhaps some damn simple games, but it can't emulate the NES since it has 16K and the Uzebox only 4K.

  • Wow man , I think my next project would be a midi player ! I LOVE the music ! It just reminds me of the whole memories where gaming was REAL ! not just a bunch of shitty games of today !

  • I just shit my pants that was so cool

  • eww o.0

  • viel zu geil die scheisse :P

  • I loveee this music. Brings back a lot of good memories. Megaman II stays my all time favorite! Double Dragon's next :D

  • Great stuff!

  • What type of MIDI keyboards can the MIDI output can work with?

I may composed my own songs with this! Good work!

  • The Uzebox currently has only MIDI IN. One could easily write a retro-looking 8-bit sequencer and output MIDI out and control their own keyboards...wouldn't that be awesome?!? A professional firm has decided to produce fully assembled Uzebox boards for under 80$, so stay tuned. Have a look at the site and the forums to see when its available!

    Cheers!

  • Does the synth accept midi cc commands for parameter control, or is it note only?

  • It accepts notes, patch change and controllers. Though I have only coded the Expression CC and modulation so far.

  • Love that chip tune sound, nice to hear the Metroid theme by the way! What did program u use to compose the sounds and melody ?

  • Thanks, I took a shortcut for the song...I used a nsf-to-midi converter, and tweaked it a bit to use my instruments. Thats why it sound just as the original. The sequencer is Sonar.

  • WOw...great work ! Can't wait to see some cool games on it ! When is the Emulator out ? haha ;) Just kidding !

  • BTW, roughly how much was the total cost?

  • With what on the final board, just under 80$(CAD). I spent much more experimenting and buying wrong parts. Prototyping stuff is expensive. Only the wirewrap sockets and SMT adapter cost around 30$!

  • Alright cool. Thanks for the info, and thanks for making your work open to the community! I'm sure lots of people will appreciate this.

  • Oh, that doesn't include the NES connectors, you got to buy an old broken NES from ebay for that.

  • Alright. Yeah, that should be no problem, I believe I still have an old NES lying around somewhere.

  • Nice man, can't wait to build my own!
