  • The 2.3L Turbo Diesel engine came in the D50 Dodge (Mitshibishi) 1983 - 1986, only three years. I bought mine new at Beatrice, Nebraska new in 1984. Consistently received 26 to 30 miles to the gallon with manual 5 speed transmission. Rumor had it Mitshibishi did too good of a job in building this 2.3L and couldn't sell enough parts, so it got scrapped after three years production.

  • these motors are rare if it where mine i would clean it up and repaint it and use it til the wheels fall off

  • runs very good for sitting 10years buy anotherone cheap and use it for parts they are kind of rare

  • @OUniversity, dude, this is a textbook diesel sound. Come on people!

  • now thats a piece of shit

  • Diesel Rangers:

    1983-1984: Mazda-Perkins S2 (variation of Perkins 4.135), 2209 cc, 59 hp

    1985-1987: Mitsubishi 4D55T, 2346 cc, 86 hp

This Ranger is a 1986 model, and the engine under the hood is the 4D55T.

  • My '85 Mitsubishi MightyMax Turbo Diesel will SMOKE that ranger. :)

  • That's the isuzu eh

  • rare truck i have a 86 ranger 4x4 supercab stx

  • hell yeah

  • Doesn't sound like a diesel.... Douche bag

  • @OUniversity then you obvisouly never heard a diesel before this is the stock perkins diesel ford ranger engine

  • @Z3CHYD not perkins thats the older ranger diesel, 86 87 and 88 had this Mitsubishi 4d55t turbo diesel, I have an 87 with this engine. I cant remember for sure but I think the perkins was offered from 83 to 85 and it was non turbo with only like 54 HP, while the mitsubishi had around 90 hp.

  • @dryice0002006 oh yea I forgot bout the mitsu engine, thanks for the info. Now if only I could find one of these lol

  • so jealous!

  • It's not always about speed or power.

  • LOL! They have a speedo that goes to 85!! VERY optimistic...

  • LOL! They have a speedo that goes to 85!!

  • now theres a familiar sound, I also have a 86 with the 2.3 turbo diesel, I have a stack on mine with a straight exhaust. check out my vids

  • sounds like its continuously loosing boost o:

  • i would like one to make a utv out of that was also road legal

  • If anyone's looking for diesel rangers go to Belize. They're everywhere. New and old, I thought it was pretty cool.

  • was that a factory perkins with a turbo? I didnt know they made them with a turbo, I thought they were just a basic engine.

  • @AllAlaskan907 the perkins was the earlier diesel, this is a Mitsubishi diesel.

  • so what part of kentucky are you from? i live in bath county, ky about 5 miles out of owingsville, just curius , lol nice ranger i got a 85 with a 2.0 gas

  • this thing gets 24/28 city/highway

Not bad for its time, then again i think it has like 100 horsepower/80 torque lol

Wait until 2012 I think ford is bringing the turbo diesel back (3.0 TDi, and 2.5 TDi)

Supposubly the 2.5TDi will have a combined MPG of 29 (32highway/27 City)

check out fords new zealand website they are already selling it there.

  • @Tekkin23 only thing i heard is the f150 is gonna have a small 4.4 V8 diesel. and a V6 twin turbo engine from the new SHO

  • i wouldnt trust the belts long and dont use cheap ones cause the pistons will hit valves when they break lol parts are to hard to find for them

  • FYI, the 1985-1987 Ranger diesel uses a Mitsubishi 4d55T. This engine is still used (in a more modern form) in current overseas Pajeros and others. The current 4d56 has turbo intercooler and produces about 140hp!

  • iwant

  • @xsonz2 i dont mean to sound rude but what would be desireable about it?

  • @halflife103 the turbo diesel? Its pretty rare, sounds cooler, and good on gas.

  • @xsonz2 yeah, it's great on gas, it DOESN"T USE ANY! :->

  • @halflife103 The fact that you probably won't ever see another one on the street. Some people would rather have a diesel than a gas engine. Some guys like to put stacks on their trucks and roll coal which I would find mildly amusing to see a Ranger do. Very nice find on the diesel Ranger!

  • Any kind of MPG report on this thing? I know the Isuzu 2.2's in Chevy s10's are around 35-40 mpg.

  • @JonathanErber I have an 86 that's in good shape. Engine needs a little work, valves adjusted and injectors renewed and I am pullign about 22mpg in city driving and abotu 32 on the highway.

  • i have same truck i get about 1000kms to a tank$70of diesel theyre great till they break, just got my balancer repaired$385,then found out timing sprocket is buggered to its also obsolete another $200 to fix that then if it dont run i guess i got tonnes of parts for sale,i already have extra tranny, alternator, waterpump, head, rad, fuelpump

  • I wonder why even Ford had used the Mitsu turbo diesel in their 1985 and '86 Rangers?

  • You know what? That was what I was thinking, also.

  • Yeah, if Dodge was using it in its Ram 50 mini truck already (1983-86).

  • chevy used the mitsubishi diesels too

  • Wait a minute ... Chevy/GMC had used Isuzu 2.2L diesels in all S-10/15 variants aside from four-wheel-drive (Chevy did offer a diesel version of the previous, Isuzu-built LUV in 4WD, in that truck's final year of 1982).

  • mitsubishi straight 6, diesel in the tilt cab trucks my dads had one

  • In many aspects chevy still uses Isuzu diesels.

  • did they really? in what years?

  • yea i wonder why?

  • i like way it sounds i got a stack on my d50 i got more of a cummins sounds

  • i got the exact same truck , there little things that never stop haa

  • that truck has a sweet sound

  • After new fuel that isnt stale and a good thrashing it will run even better.

I got an old ford diesel, had been stood for ages, was slow as a pig , got gradually better at running and starting, now its nearly twice as good.

Is that a 3 valve per cylinder diesel?

  • 50 MPG!!! Yeah.

  • Thats a mitsubishi 4D55T engine, same as in the dodge ram50s of the same era. Ford offered them in the ranger from 1985-1987, very rare. They're nice because of the overhead cam and turbocharger that give it a nice mid range power torque curve. I swapped on into one into an 87 ranger and its a really nice engine that will push the truck past 80 MPH if its healthy. I wish our donor truck came with a tach though, I'd kill to get my hands on an OEM diesel ranger tachometer.

  • that does looks like the mitsubishi L200 and L300 vans engine alright

  • how much did you pay for that truck?

  • Same with me. I have a 1990 Ford F-150 and my dad parked it back in 2000. Been sitting for 7 years. He gave it to me. I turned it over and it fired right up. Just needed a new battier. Needs some body work now obv. And brake lines.

  • Nice! I too am a old diesel lover. I have a 82 300SD with the 5cyldiesel in it. Check out the videos

  • hey thats nice i got the 1987 ranger with the same motore things a beast, lifted, 35 inch tires stacks, its top of the line

  • We just snagged ourselves an old ranger with the 2.2 Perkins. Body and frame screwed but engine fine.

  • damn i didnt know they put diesels in the old rangers. and sittin for 10 years and just starts right up.. now thats Built Ford Tought right there...try that one chevy and dodge lovers!! Ford Kicks Ass

  • u had to bring ford vs. chevy dodge when the diesel engine in dodges runs for millions of miles. nice

  • the 2.3 turbodiesel engine Ford used was a mitsubishi 4d55t, which was also used in the Dodge D50 and the Mitsubishi Mighty Max.

the 2.2L diesel in the 1984 and earlier Ranger was a Perkins also used in the Mazda B2200 trucks.

  • In USA do u have to change number plates every year?

In UK we keep same number but buy road tax- a piece of paper that u stick on window inside.

  • well in Canada we buy the plates and insurance and then you just have a sticker that you put on the plate every year to show it is up to date

  • Wierd, ours keep same plates all their life!

  • i love those old 80's trucks! my dad had a mighty max, 93, gas....i've only seen a handful of d50s and 1 diesel ranger, had an enthusiastic conversation with that dude :P

  • You and me both, I want one of them 80's Rangers. I'd kill to get a good one in Ohio

  • right now i'm in the market for a used 80's subcompact, like a rabbit or a festiva, hehe

  • all them big v8 diesel in america and u want a european 4 cylinder?!

I'd swap u if I could, Im sick of 4 pots.

  • i have a wierd taste in vehicles :)

  • not wierd at all I think, they look cool and have character, unlike modern plain rounded cars.

U got rear wheel drive to!

Turn the pump up, fit an exhaust stack using bigger bore pipe from manifold back, replace airfilter with a freeflow one with a cold air feed and u will have a good car.

  • @angustuba Welcome to the club

  • i have an 83 diesel ranger with the Mazda/Perkins. unfortunately it is naturally aspirated so i don't have much power but man, the engine is about the most reliable engine ever. Haven't had to do anything to it and it has over 200,000 miles on it.

  • 5-speed manual, I bet. Sweet truck, though.

  • my god! it has a tach, I've never seen that before!

  • and it f=ing redlines at 4500 OMG

  • that is a high redline.. i thought they redline at 3k?

  • that depends. the 12V Cummins has a low redline whereas the Ford and Chevy rev'd higher. i think it mainly has to do with the cylinders as cummins is an inline6 and ford and chevy are v-8s

  • diesels redline low, that's where all the power is.

  • yeah i understand that.. i just wondered cuz this trucks redline was a little high
