@Calatafimi yeah, he's of Spanish descent, but some people call that "latino" too, just check Antonio Banderas or Javier Bardem, and they are ok with that... Anyways, Corea really feels great connection with his Spanish roots, he has based many albums on Spanish-influenced fusion
can someone please explain what chick is doing musically at about 5:10? he does some of the most perplexing shapes and i can't figure out what it is he's doing. it's an enigmatic sound
@iPR0SH0T it's a classic display of the 'God' 251, although he has altered it masterfully to some extent, it can exhibits all the distinguishable traits....this type of line can only be performed by a being who has ascended and risen to the rank of a God.
@iPR0SH0T The harmony is atonal at that moment, there's no functional relationship between the notes he's playing other than that of the intervals between the individual notes that he is playing VERY fast. It almost sounds like his own funky version of 12 tone serialism.
@NickjamesC yeah i sort of suspected as much, but I find it very hard to just play random notes and have that puzzling feeling. it's like he's playing random notes, but each and every note is perfectly in place to induce that feeling. but I also understand that his musical mind works much faster and more efficiently than mine, and I am okay with that
@zooby11isbambam y cant something evil be beautiful? cant agree w ya there, i love those fiendish dissonant chords that makes me feel evil when i play them....i believe those chords were prohibited by the christians... the devils chord is the diminished chord..
@Contrapunctus1 I totally agree. You often hear Paul Hindemith's influence in their playing as well. "Inventions and Dimensions" by Herbie is one of my all-time favorites. If you like modern jazz, contemporary classica, or both, it's a great one to hear often.
Could be me or the 39,000 plus persons blinded by the Jazz but Herbies T-shirt told me '89 but vid info tells me 1987 - now I'm no mathematical genius but last time I checked (none too long ago in fact) 7 came before 9! I mean I know these guys are ahead of there time but hold the phone Mary!!! Is there something Blue Note ain't telling us???
This was so frickin' amazingly insane that my face resembled that of Herbie Hancock when Chick Corea came back with a mind-blowing line at 9:23. . . almost horrifying, but incredible!
Incredible. One of the most Amazing videos and music I ever heard! Even deeper and more musical than most Corea and Hancock works. Incredible! Incredible!
It is a rare video of two awesome players who both demonstrate exceptionality(not a word) in one recording that doesn't draw the attention of some horrible, music-hating troll...and i am happy to watch this video while reading no offensive comments. I can only assume through my minimal french skills that my positive thoughts on this show are shared by all. I hope i didn't jinx it, but I'm glad that the impressions left by this creation left everyone feeling as happy as I do.
genius comes to a point that conventionality simply can't grasp. the boundaries aren't even pushes at this point; they've just simply evaporated. haha as a humble songwriter, who started my current YouTube haunt with Amos Lee and Tom Waits this evening, this simply frightens me! it's incredible and beautiful but far beyond what i can comprehend. now i'll just ponder the definitions of harmony and dissonance...

You know that Chick Corea isn't latino ?
Some people often think he's Mexican or from South America.

@rodcrippler
He is both SICILIAN and Spanish but not only Spanish. You have plenty of COREA in Southern Italy (Calabria especially).
Latin people from Europe are called latino in North America when they have dark hair, dark eyes lol.
Rafael Nadal could be latino. Bardem looks more European.

You fail at dates.
This video can't be from 1987. Why? Look at Hancock's shirt. It CLEARLY reads, "Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival 1989."
How did Herbie get a shirt from TWO YEARS IN THE FUTURE?
timothymbess 1 year ago 3
I really don't think that this is from 1987 given the fact that Herbie is wearing a Fuji '89 tshirt. Just saying.
