Oh my G... I have +1 year using Linux, and one of my dreams is to learn how to compile a kernel. I wonder if your tutorial works w/o changes for debian and mint lmde, I setup some little servers (debian) and my own pc run on mint lmde. But my concern is what issues can I have if I currently have a closed video driver installed and if I compile a new kernel just for tests, I need to uninstall the driver first? Regards
You should do some tutorials for absolute beginners. Like me... haha :D
Ok, I already have some programming experience on windows, but this whole linux thing for me is like if it was in chinese... I don't understand a single word of it :D But I want to learn it. Because I know that for developing solutions, programming, running servers, making custom OSs to special devices, etc. linux is the ultimate way to go. But I don't really know how to begin. Your tutorials are great but not for beginners.
There are also a 1000 disadvantages to customising the kernel. It's best not to do it UNLESS you have to. Speed improvement is really not a reason (and TBH speed doesn't really improves, I mean if you want more speed you need better hardware).
@kotapaka Custom kernel.work should be done by someone who knows what they are doing however things like closed source video drivers can be included in the kernel specific hardware patches not included by default also the ability to things like BFS if you prefer it to CFS if you start with your current config and are careful most intermediate linux users would be fine.
@swedishgodkiller To simplify kernel is software that sits between your hardware and all the applications you use. It's purpose is to provide resources such as memory, files on the disk, internet, printers and other to applications.
Great tutorial! I will also try it:)
