By far the best performance Waits has given since the '70s. His voice is so fucking limber here that it defies rational belief. The slinky vibe is unreal. I literally can't even listen to the studio version of this song anymore.
"Day After Tomorrow" is so poignant and beautiful - the first time I heard it, I cried for like 10 minutes. Thanks so much, Tom Waits, for this gorgeous song, reminding us all that war is hell. I pray every day for a world without war.
There used to be on the net a beautiful version of the 'Day after tomorrow', I believe from 2006. It was taken down unfortunetely. If someone could repost this vedeo I would be more than grateful.
The first time I heard this song, I immediately thought of our boys, men, and women who are putting their lives on the line for us every day. I am a veteran, and I want the original studio cut of this played at my funeral. I've been a TW fan since the late 70's, and his genius continues to inspire me. Thank you for this post, and God Bless the U.S.A. OUTSIDETHEBOCKS
Wow! That's so awesome that they're still working together! I've been watching a lot of his solo projects and collaborations on utube (John Lurie(but i found your link though a 'Down by Law' clip) and Medisky Martin & Wood). In a lot of his later stuff he looks heavier and he's sitting down in all of them. Thanks again!
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing this! I just saw him in Houston, he did both of these songs--Day After Tomorrow had much the same feel but Murder in the Red Barn was not so jazzy & lyrical. It's very cool hearing the man do different interpretations of his own work!
Definately Marc Ribot.....I worked on that show.

Live versions of "Day After Tomorrow" are infinitely better than the one on the record.
