For someone that doesn't like Filipino food, can you recommend some basic Filipino foods without all the fish and sauces. Planning to visit the islands that is why i ask.

If you like pork try: Lechon Kawali (Crispy skin, Fried Pork) or Sisig (pork ears)

If you like noodles: Try Pancit (basically very similar to chinese chow mein)

If you like chicken: Try adobo (has a vinegar/soy based sauce but most people like it)

If you like desert: Try Halo-Halo (tropical fruits, shaved ice and purple yam ice cream)

Try to find "good" BBQ restaurants. You'll get more simpler dishes there because flame grilling is the focus. (Most Filipinos speak English)

Tapa (a breakfast beef, marinated in soy, lemon and brown sugar typically served with eggs and garlic fried rice)

Sisig (recomended), BBQ pork ears or beef cheeks, diced and tossed with green onion and lime. Eaten with a beer as a street food but can be ordered in a restaurant as well.

Lumpia Shanghai: Egg rolls with pork and minced carrot

Soup: Pancit Molo (beef or pork silky "wanton soup" usually with a shrimp based stock)

If u will go to the Philippines make sure you get a nice restaurant (If you want to play safe go to commercialized Filipino restos.) you need to be picky, cause these days no food is guaranteed safe if you buy street food.

Can anyone show me a successful Filipino restaurant in Vancouver with a population of 2 million? My wife is Filipino and is the first to admit that Filipino food doesnt look good and lacks flavor...compared with most other Asian food...Just compare the lack of success with Filipino restaurants...the results speak for themselves...Why so much anger..if Filipinos like it...great...if nobody else likes the food...so what!! Yes some are not appealing to western taste, but taste is regional. For a food to be appealing, it must have fresh flavor, texture is balanced, w/ an eye-catching presentation. But try our countryside cooking, thats Pinoy cooking at best.

I looked up the dish fairshare614 suggested, and it pretty much sounds like it. Defenite broth, I liked to mix with a bowl of rice (especially if the rice was a little on the dry side).
