Graphic Design is something very different than it was 20 years ago when this woman started her career. I'm not saying that experience isn't important, I'm saying its very over-rated.

In an area where kids without a high school degree are hacking government databases, I think we can all agree that self education is not to be mocked. Also technology has made many careers less elitist than they once were.

Design in this era is about knowing the principles and learning the tools.

Seriously tho, what art school does anyone know out there that teaches any student "real world" basics? NONE! The sad truth is that colleges/universities/institut­es don't teach you what happens in the real world. Public speaking? How to talk to & deal with clients, especially the difficult ones? How to set yourself up in different types of design environments/companies? How to interact with your boss that knows nothing about design? Everything I've learned, I had to throw out the window.

i have an AA in graphic design and i never learned Graphic design on a computer...i learned it all freehand and i learned how to use the programs like illustrator indesign and photoshop later... its hard to get a GD job now..expecially with and AA...and if your broke with no money to buy programs.

alot of company's use old stuff only very rich film companys upgrade often. were talking pentinum 4, 1gb of ram on you typical companys pc's. i seen seen that for auto cad setups too. main reason easy for the IT people to fix and cheap to maitain.

Nowhere I've ever worked used Quark. Maybe in some parts of the country they still use it but InDesign is heading to the forefront (and that includes publishing). It's just a matter of time...especially with conversion software getting better.
