The saddest thing about this is that we can prevent this from happening. We have the power to spay and neuter all these pets, so they don't go on to breed more. We have the power to stand up and put a stop to animal breeders, professional and back yard breeders. We have the voice to speak up and speak out on behalf of all these animals! But most of us don't, most of us don't care. If we informed people about the millions of animals being put to sleep, we'd make a difference, slowly but surely.

You never know what they have gone through in their life, we need to love them like they are our child. They deserve better and people dont buy an animal if you cant take care of them let people take them that will take the time to care for them, feed them, and love them. well craiglist has animals that you can get for less than a 100 sometimes if your lucky its purebreed but shelter its adoption fee is to high thats the problem its hard to compete with craiglist. so dont think why less adoption in shelter and there is even free dog in craiglist if your lucky you will get the dog or cat. no wonder alot getting euthenize in shelter

Do these people look like they enjoy euthanizing animals? They are genuinely respectful and good citizens. Would you rather a dog/cat be put to sleep? Or would you rather them be hung, shot, drowned, etc? BECAUSE THAT DOES HAPPEN. Blame the people who breed animals, buy pets at stores, and are irresponsible. They are the reasons animal shelters exist! They aren't here to kill animals! Do you think these people wake up every morning thinking "Oh, I get to kill 100 dogs and cats today! YAY!"

Try to realize that if they didn't euthanize dogs/cats, a lot of them would suffer the rest of their lives in kennels. Under the needle they feel no pain. Their last moments are good ones because there are people who volunteer to pet the dog/cat and reassure them that everything will be okay. Think of this chain process: No euthanasia means more suffering, and more animals living out on the street because if there is no room that's what happens. I don't like it just as much as you do, okay?

What are they supposed to do? Personally adopt every animal that is about to run out of time at a shelter? They have no choice, there is NO where for these animals to go. There's just too many dogs & cats for them to have forever loving homes. And even if they aren't euthanized? Is it worth it for these animals to be confined to a small area, waiting to be let out? They don't understand any of it. Euthanasia, if by needle, is sometimes the best thing for the animals.

@Sicsaem I think there needs to be more people to make a difference. Surely it can be stopped if enough people got off their asses and came up with a solution or at least tried. Maybe one day there will be no euthanisation and the animals that survive wont live out their life in a small area but in comfort because us people made it possible by WHATEVER MEANS IT TAKES. After all us people are who put them in the situation they're in we could at least band together and stop it.

Well sure, definitely! However, euthanasia or other forms of it will always exist because there's always going to be a terminally ill dog/cat or ones that are "irreplaceable". I don't agree with it, believe me, but there are just way too many animals out there. The thing is though, most shelters have to have a time limit because they can't deny other animals a chance to get adopted. It's the sad truth. I would take every single animal if I could, but there's just no way.

Like I said, I do not support animals being put to sleep for reasons such as behavioral issues, or irresponsibility. There is a way, and that is to spay and neuter your animals, and to adopt from shelters instead of buying from breeders and pet stores. Taking that step alone would help many animals! But as long as people irresponsibly own animals there will always be shelters euthanizing cats and dogs.

Yearly vet checks, injuries, illness, food. What if their pet requires a special diet? Maybe when they adopt the pet, it is healthy, but that's no guarantee for the long term.

I had two dogs before I was 14. I was at the vet when both were put down. It was a valuable experience. Mind you, one was incurable, the other was definately old and on the way out. As an adult I had to put a sick bunny down. No one should be allowed to drop a pet off for this without being there. Maybe kids should be taken first to watch it before we buy that new puppy. It's not their fault, they were once kittens and puppies too. They only want to be loved. I have been to the pound before its sad when you go in the room with cats because people always want the kittens never the older cats I felt so sorry for them that no one wanted them. And as for the dogs when you go in the room with them they would start barking and jumping trying to make you take them home with you (or they want food) (by the way we was there because my sister wanted a kitten) but the kitten became a cat and died at the age of 4 we miss her so much.

if people would take the time to spay or neuter their pets, then things like this would not happen. I don't see why some people need to buy from breeders or pet stores unless they are buying food , toys, or pet supplies. Mixed breeds make good pets as well and so do older animals. I work in a shelter where animals are euthanized only if they are terminally ill. Just because an animal is old does not mean they have to be killed. I have 5 dogs and 3 cats, some are older and some are not.

I could wish that when people give up their pets, they would be required by law to witness their animal being put to death. They shouldn't just be able to dump an animal and walk away.
